I've always had a weird impression of this show. For the first two seasons I thought the contestants absolutely stank. Then last season there was that one guy with the mad hair and soulful voice. He alone actually turned me around on the show. Now I'm watching the season premier and I am really digging the singers they've had perform. I think I'm a fan of the show.

So nice to have this show back. So much more fun to watch than the stankfests that Idol has become and that X Factor has always been. Quality judges (havent watched it all yet, so maybe the two new people suck?), great production, and people that can sing.

Wow this guy really just ripped off Noah's cover of Sexy and I Know It. Note for note. Surprised none of the judges have seen the original.

OK, Usher and Shakira so far are really good replacements. Whoever's making the decisions at the show on who to get obviously knows what they're doing.

Godamn Shakira is so hot, great replacement for Xtina. Usher is constantly name dropping Bieber, Adam can't do that no more since Usher is on the show now XD! It's too bad they didn't seat Shakira next to Blake, it would have been a much more interesting show with the two of them sitting next to each other.

In terms of tonight's voice hauls, Team Adam looks the strongest.

Watched the premier. VERY entertained. I need no more convincing that The Voice is heads and shoulders above any other competition show right now when it comes to talent level and just being fun to watch.

I will say that I'm going to miss Xtina, though. Not just because she's my fave, but I think that something that made Xtina so compelling to me on the show was she just didn't give a fuck about how she was perceived, which let her get down and dirty with the other judges. Often on these live reality shows female judges tend to play soft because, socially, if a woman is harsh she's not seen as "tough" like a man; she's a "raving bitch." Xtina gave no shits about that, which made her a very formidable judge, and when she praised a contestant it came with a sense of the contestant having really earned it.

Shakira did good last night, but we'll see how that goes when the live shows start.

That ratings for night 1 were higher than Idol's been much of this season, but that's probably to be expected since it's the debut. It also debuted to higher ratings than it did last season. Whether or not viewership takes a huge nosedive as Idol has this season remains to be seen. I wonder how much of that is determined by the likability of the new judges. The two new people seemed to fit right in. I think what helps the show is the format and the fact that the interplay between the judges is playful and not ugly as it is on other shows.

Judith Hill is CRAZY TALENTED, I feel like the voice should be paying her to be on the show. I'm glad she got the attention that she deserves

Yup, shes leaps and bounds above everyone day 1. Her looks and story along with talent. Adam wins.

I don't watch these music shows (watched idol for a couple years) but for whatever reason (actually I was flipping through channels and saw Shakira -- so fucking hot) I ended up just watching the entire premier. And then again tonight.

It's pretty entertaining. And some of these people are actually talented, like, in a real way and not the karaoke sense of most of these shows.

I will probably keep tuning in. I set the DVR anyway. This beats the pants off what I remember of Idol and the rest.

That last chick totally killed it on a song I generally dislike. Good job girl. Simmons, I think.

Yeah, the format itself is better than the other show. In the first two seasons the show took a nose dive in the middle third of the show, but they added some much needed drama to it last season, which greatly improved it. It's nice to see that the chemistry with the new judges is up to par with what they had previously too. It's something the other singing shows appear to want to emulate, but fail miserably at. My favorite part of the show though (outside of the talent) is the band. The Voice has the absolute best band of the three shows. Really great stuff.

I think one of the things I like best about the Voice is that the coaches never rip into the contestants. It's not like Idol where that actively make fun of some contestants during the auditions. Instead, the coaches on the Voice offer some honest constructive criticism and encourage the contestants to work on the things they pointed out and try again the next season. Much better than making fun of the kids who aren't very good.

The difference is the Voice already narrows down contestants before the judges see them and already picks the talent.

But in the past on Idol (it's been years since I've seen it), Simon would still rip into contestants during the actual competition part of the show. They don't do that on the Voice. Again, they say the performance was off and give constructive criticism, whereas Simon would call the performance "pathetic" or something along those lines.

Yeah Shakira ia a big upgrade over Christina already, she seems to have much better taste.

Usher seems to have no personality at all compared to Cee Lo tho.

Yeah the Voice judges fighting over contestants are all in good fun, which is why the show is so entertaining over Idol.

Ratings for second episode are in. Down a tenth over the second episode from last season.

Seems the initial bump of the new judges didn't last long.

The ratings crushed...absolutely crushed...American Idol's ratings from this past week. Down a tenth over the first Tuesday show is nothing to worry about, especially considering how high the show lifted the other shows around it. The producers of Go On are saying thank you. The other big difference is that American Idol got scared and ran away from Dancing With The Stars, which The Voice goes head-to-head against and beats. Anyway you look at it, from ratings to reviews, to judges, Voice has the positive buzz while Idol is getting negative buzz heaped on it as ratings for it drop continuously all season. The producers of X Factor and Idol could learn a lot from whomever at NBC is picking the judges. To not lose a step after two of the biggest judges depart is noteworthy. How it holds up all season is another thing altogether, but so far they're cheering at NBC headquarters.

You can't compare mid season ratings to debut ratings.

The fact is that Idol from it's first episode to second dropped .4 in the demo. The Voice dropped .9. Maybe it is an anomaly, maybe it isn't.

Also would like to note that your "not lose step after the two main judges depart" line is complete BS since Idol was UP %10-%20 the season after Simon left. If anything the departure of high profile judges has been shown to help ratings for these types of shows.

X Factor adds Britney. Ratings bomb. Idol adds Nicki and Mariah. Ratings bomb. Last week's Idol ratings are a full point behind The Voice. If The Voice's ratings plummet all season as Idol's has, then their producers/network should worry. If, however, it jumps back to around the numbers The Voice put up this past Fall when it destroyed X Factor, Fox is going to have to seriously think about altering their failing show. The only thing we do know about these shows at this point is that Idol's drops initially were not an anomaly. And their bottom is nowhere in sight.

Yet so far The Voice's ratings from episode to episode are dropping FASTER than Idols did and from a lower total to start with. I think they have every reason to be worried. (Idol does as well TBH).

X Factor is done no doubt though. Simon will stick around for the season then go back to try to save the Uk version.

Not sure why you brought up the big name judges. Britney and Mariah are irrelevant to my argument. My argument centers on established judges leaving (aka Simon, Paula, Xtina, etc) boosting ratings. Adding starpower obviously doesn't.

A tenth of a point. A tenth of a point is a precipitous drop? Idol on Thursday was down a full point. A full point. That's disastrous. Look, I get it, you desperately want Idol to beat The Voice, but it isn't happening. And it's not due to a lack of talent, but rather a lack of quality producing. Fox is killing their own show. The Voice always feels fresh, and most importantly it feels friendly/welcoming. X Factor and Idol feel ugly in comparison and it's obviously driving their viewers away. Idol's idiotic desire to count as many votes as possible led to an endless string of white guys winning the show, which they're obviously trying to counter this year and it's killing them because the biggest chunk of viewers they've lost are in the age range that The Voice is now dominating in. I don't care which show gets better ratings, I just care which show is fun to watch. Idol is drek. X Factor is unwatchable. So it's nice to have at least one alternative that's still worth watching. Multiple actually if you watch The Voice from around the globe.

A tenth of a point from last season yes, but a .9 from the first episode.

I realize you have to compare season to season on some level. However, that is not the only comparison to be made.

Either way The Voice's ratings are only good "for an NBC show". They are still well behind Idol at equal point in their respective seasons (all reality shows drop significantly as the seasons go on) and even if Idol continues to under perform it will still be the more popular show. Claiming that The Voice is "dominating" the Demo's when it is still below where Idol was is pure hyperbole.
