Yeah. Out of fairness, I sometimes wish there were equivalent characters for MS & Sony fans, but Nintendo fans as a target.. {*resumes biting tongue*}
This is off topic, but I feel that the newer, younger gafers should know, at the very least, a brief, one-sided history of the forum. This is from my own foggy recollection of what others have talked about before I came here in 2001, and my own personal perception, as a PC/Nintendo fan from then on. This isn't concerning all of the long time veterans because most of them are good posters whom have greatly contributed to what makes gaf such a pleasant place to visit. This is about a select group of vets who have displayed certain culpable habits over the years. I don't know if I will get in trouble for this, but this is what happened from my own ppov.
As I recall, GAF use to be a Square fan forum during the PSX era before it split into GA and OA. I do not know if GA came into existence before the actual split occurred. Being a Square fan and a Sony fan usually went hand in hand back then, and a lot of the long time gafers go back to that time period. We may never know for sure, but this may or may not have something to do with why you might still see random taunting of Nintendo fans and terms like "ninthings" or "manchild" (ironic I know) being thrown at you guys without provocation or repercussion. Some of them may even still passionately believe that Nintendo fans are the worst of all fanboys.
DC was a mod back then and was propped up as this legendary Nintendo troll who regularly baited Nintendo fanboys with troll topics and hijacked Nintendo related topics. It was suppose to be some kind of in joke, with the vets, that DC was not actually a Nintendo troll, as much as he was a Nintendo fanboy troll. His bait and switch methods use to involve some sort of ignorant and generalized attack on Nintendo fans with the designation "manchild" thrown in for good measure. His shenanigans became prominent during E3 and platform launches. Remember, this is pre waggle so the trolling was more along the lines of "Nintendo is kiddy. Third party games sell like crap. Nintendo milks the same tired old franchises. Nintendo is going 3rd party next year." etc. and eventually "The DS sucks compared to PSP". I forget which exact year, but a Nintendo fan hacked the forum and started to either erase or ban well known Nintendo trolls. Needless to say, Drinky was allowed to troll the entire Nintendo fan base in reprisal as if it were some vast conspiracy.
Not long after the Thursdayton and Tuesdayton troll topics (and the infamous "believe" and owl memes), the DS began to outsell the PSP by insanely large margins in all territories. A year later the Wii launched and began to outsell PS3 and 360. During this time Sony trolling mostly consisted of "600 dollars!" and "Get a 3rd job.". Microsoft trolls were usually RROD related (including from myself) and Nintendo trolls changed from "Nintendo is going 3rd party." into making fun of waggle and SD visuals. The most reasonable gafers understood that both Sony and MS would eventually try and copy the motion control aspect of the Wii.
Before the Wii even launched, Drinky's popularity began to decline as more and more people simply chose to ignore his antics. He eventually retired his mod status but still retained virtual immunity. A long time gafer named Jackfrost2012, came forward claiming to be the DC character. He appealed to the forum for whether his performance should be put to bed or if he should continue on as the Crow. However, this too was suppose to be some sort of inside joke as to who DC's true identity really is. From what I can tell Drinky never closed his account, and after a while, JackFrost seemed to have gotten rid of his.
It would appear that the general disdain for "ninthings" has become much less obvious over the years. I would like to believe that, like myself, this is actually because the guilty parties became more mature and simply outgrew such a ridiculous prejudice. Unfortunately, every now and then those old tendencies become quite evident.
A long time ago I came to understand that people who take pleasure in poking fun of others, especially with myopic generalizations, are usually very insecure about themselves, in one way or another. The result usually being the desire to project your own insecurities onto others. I feel sad for any grown adult, who still feels the need to manufacture or participate in console warz, just to entertain themselves or justify their own prejudice, by trying to prove that a certain group of people fit the mold of some frivolous stereotype. Example; "Ninthings are such sensitive, whiny manchildren. Watch me troll them and prove their manchildliness." Once you understand their motivation you can't help but feel sorry for those who feel the need to do this.
So here is some advice. When you see this being done in the future, ignore them. Just about any reaction you give will be interpreted as validation for their actions. And if you fit this same category, but with a prejudice against Sony and MS fans (and not the actual companies), it would be wise to just grow up.
