What is the likelihood of:

1. The Wii U controller screen being 3D like the 3DS?
2. Having a digital TV tuner in the controller?
3. Having TV remote/media center controller function?
4. Having a Wii remote+ and wireless nunchuk packed in?
5. A more robust achievement system along the lines of the 3DS?
6. Augmented reality similar to Johnny Lee's tech demos?
7. Multiple colors at launch?
8. Angry Birds with Nintendo property?
9. Excite Trucks 3?
10. Four Swords online?
11. Animal Crossing online with integrated achievements, weather, trailers, etc. like Playstation Home.
12. Using 3DS systems with Wii U like GBAs were used with GCN for Four Swords, but wireless (and online)?
13. Steam?
14. Transfer of Wii VC titles?
15. A new Balance Board with vibration and bioelectrical impedance analysis sensors for body (fat) composition?
16. Vitality sensor used somehow?
17. Changing color slot illumination?
18. Being able to log into your Wii U account at a friends house and have full access to your digital downloads?
19. Achievements tied to Club Nintendo?
20. Full game installs with code from purchase (digital or disc) making used games useless without an unused code.

Repost for the new page.

20. Will Microsoft and Sony do this?

I'm on this boat as well, i was just quoting that in a hypothetic event seeing Microsoft revealing its next Xbox, the content showed from third-parties (well, a few of them) will be very, very limited.

But there are middle grounds between a surprising revelation of their next hardware and a complete blackout on this subject, it's nearly certain we'll at least hear small things at E3 2012.

It's certainly possible that they could drop some clues about it at E3. But the danger there is that consumers will know that the followup is coming soon and they'll back off of buying the current hardware. Why drop $200 on a 360 when the new system could be right around the corner? That's why I think you see Sony and MS constantly shooting down rumors about their next consoles. They want to get everything they can out of the PS3 and 360 before talking about their next consoles.

Right I understand that and if the GPU were going to be more traditional, I would be more inline with the notion of if being 1TFLOP. But a 1TFLOP GPU with the extra functions would pretty much put it on par (at least 1st party and 3rd party exclusives) with the PS4 and Xbox 3. That's one of the main reasons why we can eliminate that idea. I also don't see AMD making a non-GCN GPU at 28nm. Also it sounds like, and just being honest, you seem to be treating GCN differently than what it is. Like in this part you say "cut out gcn function". You can't cut out GCN function. That would be akin to saying "cut out the VLIW5 function". GCN is the architecture (e.g. the compute unit). GCN is just the name AMD gave to it. That might explain why you have been saying what you have in regard to PS4 and Xbox 3. They will be using compute units. There's really no arguing against that.

But you're talking about something that nothing points to being in existence on Nintendo's side. Bringing up the 7770 is irrelevant because that is a 1Ghz GPU. The 2.25x refers to the pixels only. And considering Nintendo is relying on eDRAM, I expect the BW of Xbox 3's memory to be much larger even if they did end up with the same amount. The power gap won't be smaller than Xbox/PS2. A similar gap is the best scenario.

It's not based on cost, but on trying to think like how Nintendo thinks (which helped on my earlier guesses). I don't see Nintendo pursuing a high-clocked GPU. That's not in their nature.

Can you tell me more about that?

BG.

Haven't you been the one in the IGN PS4 thread on this forum talking about how the PS4 and 720's dual GPU's will ammount to around the 2 terraFLOPs of GPU grunt.

Your past few posts in here have now indicated that Wii U's GPU will now be around the 480 gigaFLOPs range. Which is still double the 360's and will make Nintendo exclusives look great in HD.

How exactly is this going to be any different to this generation tho regarding third party games / engines, when you have GPU's that are three times more powerful, most prob a much faster CPU and at least an extra GB of system memory in the PS4 / 720 ?.

Maybe im misunderstanding so thanks for setting the record straight.

A lot of my dislike for JRPG/anime archetypes stems from Japan's obsession with teen and child characters though, which for me make the worst protagonists ever.

Easily one of the worst trends in gaming/anime. The minimum age for most protagonists should be early twenties.

The oh so great exception. (One of them, anyway.)

Triple kil!

How it works is, you buy the console at a discount, and in return sign a contract stating you will pay a monthly fee for a service for at least two years. The console at that point is considered paid off completely - it isn't credit or a loan, nobody will try to collect the console if you stop paying. But if you do stop paying for the device before the contract is up, you must pay an early termination fee, which will cover the true cost of the console plus a huge fee.

In this case, the monthly service is for Xbox Live Gold, if you want to keep all it's benefits then yes you keep paying indefinitely after the two years is up. Although by then I'd expect MS would have a new console you could buy for cheap with another 2 year contract...

Ah, thanks. That sounds immediately awful, compared to what I was thinking it would be. But if the services of XBL are included... It's hard for me to say "no" outright, especially for a next-gen console.

The oh so great exception. (One of them, anyway.)

There's always a few worthy exceptions, but by large young characters carry too much baggage. Their character arcs often involve teenage emotional growth: relationships with friends, first romantic feelings, confidence issues, and so on. It's natural for these characters, but by extension makes them uninteresting and unlikable. They're naturally immature, and thus so too is thier behaviour.

It sucks, as a lot of these stories have cool ideas and words.

My partial dream scenario:

- Timesplitters 4 announced as an exclusive game for the Wii U
- Geist sequel announced for the Wii U developed by N-Space
- Eternal Darkness 2 announced for the Wii U developed by Silicon Knights
- Retro's new ip is demoed
- Nintendo announces a few game collaborations with third party studios
- Reggie gives a speech about how gamers always wanted an open world game where they can be a "badass". Demos Lego City Stories.

I didn't include the 3DS in my scenario because my dream game will definitely be there.

A lot of people will be pissed like fuck if they can't transfer Wii VC and Wiiware games to Wii U lol.

I'd be one of them. If there's any indication that they're going to do it, it's the game transfers from DSi to 3DS.

Shouldn't we have ruled out an E3 Xbox 3 reveal from serious discussion two months ago? The PR exec who denied it isn't Inaba or Jaffe; I really don't believe for a second that high-ranking PR people at publicly traded Fortune 100 companies can just outright lie about something that would be of importance to investors.

Yeah. Out of fairness, I sometimes wish there were equivalent characters for MS & Sony fans, but Nintendo fans as a target.. {*resumes biting tongue*}

This is off topic, but I feel that the newer, younger gafers should know, at the very least, a brief, one-sided history of the forum. This is from my own foggy recollection of what others have talked about before I came here in 2001, and my own personal perception, as a PC/Nintendo fan from then on. This isn't concerning all of the long time veterans because most of them are good posters whom have greatly contributed to what makes gaf such a pleasant place to visit. This is about a select group of vets who have displayed certain culpable habits over the years. I don't know if I will get in trouble for this, but this is what happened from my own ppov.

As I recall, GAF use to be a Square fan forum during the PSX era before it split into GA and OA. I do not know if GA came into existence before the actual split occurred. Being a Square fan and a Sony fan usually went hand in hand back then, and a lot of the long time gafers go back to that time period. We may never know for sure, but this may or may not have something to do with why you might still see random taunting of Nintendo fans and terms like "ninthings" or "manchild" (ironic I know) being thrown at you guys without provocation or repercussion. Some of them may even still passionately believe that Nintendo fans are the worst of all fanboys.

DC was a mod back then and was propped up as this legendary Nintendo troll who regularly baited Nintendo fanboys with troll topics and hijacked Nintendo related topics. It was suppose to be some kind of in joke, with the vets, that DC was not actually a Nintendo troll, as much as he was a Nintendo fanboy troll. His bait and switch methods use to involve some sort of ignorant and generalized attack on Nintendo fans with the designation "manchild" thrown in for good measure. His shenanigans became prominent during E3 and platform launches. Remember, this is pre waggle so the trolling was more along the lines of "Nintendo is kiddy. Third party games sell like crap. Nintendo milks the same tired old franchises. Nintendo is going 3rd party next year." etc. and eventually "The DS sucks compared to PSP". I forget which exact year, but a Nintendo fan hacked the forum and started to either erase or ban well known Nintendo trolls. Needless to say, Drinky was allowed to troll the entire Nintendo fan base in reprisal as if it were some vast conspiracy.

Not long after the Thursdayton and Tuesdayton troll topics (and the infamous "believe" and owl memes), the DS began to outsell the PSP by insanely large margins in all territories. A year later the Wii launched and began to outsell PS3 and 360. During this time Sony trolling mostly consisted of "600 dollars!" and "Get a 3rd job.". Microsoft trolls were usually RROD related (including from myself) and Nintendo trolls changed from "Nintendo is going 3rd party." into making fun of waggle and SD visuals. The most reasonable gafers understood that both Sony and MS would eventually try and copy the motion control aspect of the Wii.

Before the Wii even launched, Drinky's popularity began to decline as more and more people simply chose to ignore his antics. He eventually retired his mod status but still retained virtual immunity. A long time gafer named Jackfrost2012, came forward claiming to be the DC character. He appealed to the forum for whether his performance should be put to bed or if he should continue on as the Crow. However, this too was suppose to be some sort of inside joke as to who DC's true identity really is. From what I can tell Drinky never closed his account, and after a while, JackFrost seemed to have gotten rid of his.

It would appear that the general disdain for "ninthings" has become much less obvious over the years. I would like to believe that, like myself, this is actually because the guilty parties became more mature and simply outgrew such a ridiculous prejudice. Unfortunately, every now and then those old tendencies become quite evident.

A long time ago I came to understand that people who take pleasure in poking fun of others, especially with myopic generalizations, are usually very insecure about themselves, in one way or another. The result usually being the desire to project your own insecurities onto others. I feel sad for any grown adult, who still feels the need to manufacture or participate in console warz, just to entertain themselves or justify their own prejudice, by trying to prove that a certain group of people fit the mold of some frivolous stereotype. Example; "Ninthings are such sensitive, whiny manchildren. Watch me troll them and prove their manchildliness." Once you understand their motivation you can't help but feel sorry for those who feel the need to do this.

So here is some advice. When you see this being done in the future, ignore them. Just about any reaction you give will be interpreted as validation for their actions. And if you fit this same category, but with a prejudice against Sony and MS fans (and not the actual companies), it would be wise to just grow up.

Okay, yeah, you can't really be more clear than that.

No Next Xbox at E3, or this year.

Well of course they aren't going to tell you.. how else would it be a surprise!
-Everyone else

But yeah, I really don't think MS is in a hurry to launch it this year, but who knows maybe the sliding sales recently have lit a fire under their ass

What is the likelihood of:

1. The Wii U controller screen being 3D like the 3DS?
5%
2. Having a digital TV tuner in the controller?
0%
3. Having TV remote/media center controller function?
0% (though, obviously possible if the media center is the Wii U itself)
4. Having a Wii remote+ and wireless nunchuk packed in?
65%
5. A more robust achievement system along the lines of the 3DS?
200% It's online will probably blow 3DS out of the water
6. Augmented reality similar to Johnny Lee's tech demos?
WHAT?
7. Multiple colors at launch?
50%Maybe black as well?
8. Angry Birds with Nintendo property?
5% I believe neither side is keen on the idea
9. Excite Trucks 3?
5%I guess they will make an F-Zero instead, if they want to make such a game
10. Four Swords online?
5%Nothing really important tbh
11. Animal Crossing online with integrated achievements, weather, trailers, etc. like Playstation Home.
35% They will be focusing on the 3DS version for now; unless maybe something like SBB which will be coupled with the 3DS version
12. Using 3DS systems with Wii U like GBAs were used with GCN for Four Swords, but wireless (and online)?
15% Although Miyamoto hinted at something like that, I don't see it happening cause it will be pretty much useless
13. Steam?
35% Guess if, say, origin is there, quite possible for Steam to be there too. GS apparently has started selling Steam vouchers which sounds familiar to what Iwata was talking about - though not really anything special
14. Transfer of Wii VC titles?
90%it was already on 3DS anyway
15. A new Balance Board with vibration and bioelectrical impedance analysis sensors for body (fat) composition?
15%Nintendo doesn't like to screw people already owning its stuff (motion+ being an attachment at first, etc.)
16. Vitality sensor used somehow?
65%Why not?
17. Changing color slot illumination?
15%Nintendo is way traditional to do stuff like this
18. Being able to log into your Wii U account at a friends house and have full access to your digital downloads?
50%I hope they don't screw this, but it is Nintendo
19. Achievements tied to Club Nintendo?
75%Very likely, at least for 1st party titles
20. Full game installs with code from purchase (digital or disc) making used games useless without an unused code.
0%This is one of the few things I can NEVER see Nintendo doing for Wii U
.

I'm sure this has been discussed in one of these topics, but what are you guys thoughts on a main entry, or at least something resembling a main entry Pokemon title being released on the Wii-U? The Pokemon franchise certainly lends itself well to certain functions of the tablet controller.

discussed to death a while back, long story short, nintendo sucks and won't experiment in that way even though they could do it as an experimental spinoff title of some sort for starters. Doesn't have to replace the handheld games.

But alas they won't do it. They'll just do games like Stadium and what have you.

Another Colosseum with a robust online system would equal an instant buy for me.

You could venture the overworld like a mainline game, beat the evil team, etc. And there could be a mode where you go and meet other IRL trainers and battle them. Simple really.. but its Nintendo

How long do you think it will be until every major console Nintendo first party game ever is available on Virtual Console?

If Nintendo's gonna sell Wii U games digitally day-and-date with retail, that means there's probably nothing stopping them from almost immediately putting Gamecube and Wii games on Virtual Console (in HD possibly even). I just think it'll be nice to see every console Mario, or every console Zelda available on the eShop.

How long until third parties start following suit? You think publishers will eventually jump on one-by-one (Square Enix took a while on the PSP)?

Dream scenario? It would be something like this

- A competent online system. It has accounts, no friendcodes and it's a pretty stable service.
- Nintendo achievements. Not a personal wish, but just to shut up the dudes who keep asking for those.
- Shows of Resident Evil 2 Remake; including third person view, less ammo, Revelations-like
- Every Capcpom game on Wii U
- Left 4 Dead 3 with Wii U specific functions
- New Silent Hill game from Climax UK, going deeper into the ideas of Shattered Memories
- Eternal Darkness 2
- Disasteruuuu Day of even More Crisis with Ray blowing up
meteorites Armageddon style
- Yoshi's Island Wii U
- Monolith's Wii U RPG traveling the cosmos
- Sin & Punishment 3: PUNISH HARDER

Great post. I've been posting at GAF for like 10 years +, and I agree with pretty much everything you said.

Yes. Grow up. It's the easiest way to stay unbanned here.

Haven't you been the one in the IGN PS4 thread on this forum talking about how the PS4 and 720's dual GPU's will ammount to around the 2 terraFLOPs of GPU grunt.

The Wii U GPU's fixed function components supposedly make a huge difference and could get the visuals comparable to a 1TFLOP GPU. In pure numbers, it wouldn't hit that benchmark, though.

That's what bg, wsippel, and Stevie have been heavily speculating on correct? I'm still wondering where they got the idea for such an obscure gpu function in the first place.

Oh come on, the core gameplay was fine. Metroid works very well in a third person perspective. The story was ass, but at the end of the day, the game worked.

I'm sorry, but a lot of people hate the game because it soiled their custom personas for a silent protagonist, not because the game wasn't fun.

Just because AMD desktop cards have had a design goal to support 5 monitors does not mean that the Wii U GPU has had the same design goals. Furthermore, 'supporting' 5 different streams on the GPU itself means nothing if you don't have enough framebuffer to draw all images on.

All signs point to the Wii U having a 32 MB framebuffer. In a normal scenario, this is shared between a 1280x720 main screen and a 852x480 second screen. Adding one extra screen will already tax the resolution capability and AA possibilities on the other screens and ruin the space for whatever other graphics rescources are (hypothetically) stored on the fast memory. Depending on how the GPU is designed, adding these extra screens will not be trivial at all.

Add to that that the radio hardware Nintendo has developed has to cope with these extra screens as well. I don't think four Upads is going to happen at all, and even using two screens would stretch Nintendo's flexibility at this point.

Okay, support for 4 pads does sound like a bit much. Support for two shouldn't be a problem though. It's 2x 852x480 screens and if 360s 10MB is anything to go by then the 32MB frame buffer should be able to handle that and more no problem.

Streaming hardware shouldn't have to much a problem though I really don't know. We saw that it has a cpu, ram, and wifi. I'm thinking the 1/60th of a second simply becomes 1/120+ of a second keeping it very acceptable for something like MK WiiU. I have no idea how big a change it is if they only planned for one, which sounds strange considering it's Nintendo.

Affect 3DS as in having a system with maybe two controllers with their own screens that could be played anywhere in the house, they just may eat into their portable market more than they would like. Laying in bed and getting ready to play the WiiU game I just downloaded is quite an attractive proposal, especially when that's how I usually use my 3DS.

GAH don't play with my emotions!!!

Sorry I flipped out there. It's just some people need to let that "ruined franchise" shit go.

It was one not so well liked entry. The franchise is not dead.

The idea was cause they used similar stuff on the GC/Wii iirc, the point would be to put in a bunch of common routines on as fixed functions to reduce the need for general brute force power. I think it's basically what Intel did with Quick Sync (for video encoding) on their IGPs too, they put a bunch of fixed function stuff for common video encoding tasks in the hardware, so instead of needing to run a relatively massive CPU to encode a video the fixed hardware path can be used for "free" (quality may not be as good as x264 but it looks decent enough considering the trade off).

personally, i think the only once big nintendo franchise that's possibly dying now is star fox.

Well, this is even relevant for Wii U. Besides Nintendo choice to keep nearly all for E3, i know of one case where a developer basically hide the Wii U port of one of its multi project, because they don't want to make it appear as the definitive home system version and push a lot of potential customers to postpone their purchase from PS360 and wait for the Wii U.

For Microsoft and Sony, they can adopt the appetizer approach, not a real reveal (as they seems to not be ready + they denied preparing such a thing) but some tidbits here & there, teasing, technical hyping stuff interesting mainly the core gamers, even some theoretical capabilities/target graphics videos, to really start building the anticipation, but not enough to constitute a real meal, which will be the end lifespan titles such as Halo 4, etc. They did this for earlier systems.

Well that's a given seeing as there hasn't been a new entry in a while. Although Kid Icarus's air segments were essentially Star Fox like levels, no?
well i mean with the quality and disappointing sales but i hope the next star fox game fixes things and get the series back on track

Oh well. Time for me to making temporary bingo for nintendo, sony and general. I might find Microsoft lackluster this e3 due to rumors and etc.

I can only imagine this to be Max Payne 3.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Skyrim WiiU edition at launch either. It'd probably sell really well.

Nintendo should just make Diddy Kong Racing Wii U.

Your land vehicles resemble F-Zero machines, your water craft are Jet Skis and your aircraft ar Arwings.

They could kill three birds with one stone.

Then focuse on games that will sell more than 15 copies.

I think Nikki will drop small bombs before E3. They done it 2 years ago with Wiiu details, SMG 2, NSMBW, and Wii Fit. Also believe Nintendo might announce something on first day of E3.
