I guess some people are better at looking past the technical stuff. Although, Xenoblade, it's impressive in how large its environments are, but it's really in a "good for the Wii" manner. I hate that term but it applies for that game. It also helps that JRPG developers on HD consoles haven't really bothered to try anything as ambitious as that.

Also, Xenoblade's character models are iffy. It's a good looking game but I don't really buy it as a showcase for the Wii. I still say the Galaxy games do that.

I believe he may be speaking about the Garden demo, which used real-time graphics and seemed, according to most who looked closely, capable of at-least-360-quality graphics, rendered simultaneously in two separate viewpoints to two separate screens (one 720p, the other 480p).

*IF* the bird demo was in real time (not having a go at Nintendo here but i take all new console 'tech demos' with a bucket of salt) then it was far, far better looking than any PS3 or 360 game i have ever played and i have completed every major PS3 / 360 exclusive.

Same goes for the Zelda tech demo, graphics with that kind of texture detail, lighting, water / fire effects and smoothness just aren't possible on PS3 or 360.

That goes along with what BG says about it having around 500 gigaFLOPs of GPU grunt (thats twice the power of the 360 GPU).

How many gigaFLOPs was the PS3 GPU if the 360's was 240 and the Wii's 12 ?.

I don't think you get my point.

I said Nintendo's games, franchises, and IP's are so strong that it makes me not care about graphics and online as much.

I can't say the same for the competition.

Why do you think so many people are caught up in the idea that the next consoles from Sony and MS HAVE TO be a dramatic leap forward like this gen was? It's ALL they can bank on to keep 3rd-party interest on those platforms now that Nintendo's on the move back to at least comparable graphics capability.

take a look at the wii's sales (hardware and software) from the past couple years and compare it to 360

I think that has more to do with the games that Wii wasn't getting than anything else, man.

if you said "hey that wii game looks nice" alright, i can buy that. but STUNNING? hyperbole

The word "stunning" doesn't tie in to technological achievement. A painting can be stunning, a house can be stunning, a garden can be stunning... and none of those 3 things are rated on technical prowess, merely on artistic presentation. And is also a completely subjective term.

My thoughts exactly.

Anyone peeked at the "Are you skipping the next gen?" topic? I'm noticing that Wii U + PC is getting to be a pretty popular combination. KInda encouraging, actually.

and you don't think being graphically handicapped had anything to do with that? whether you like it or not, the common gamer is attracted to great looking games. if someone was deciding on whether to buy call of duty for the 360 or the wii (and i dont like call of duty but just humor me) which do you think looks more appealing?

Super Mario Galaxy was the best technical and creative thing I saw on the Wii. The graphics, music, level design, controller mechanics. All brilliant.

Funny how there are all these Retro Studios circle jerk threads. But there was clearly one group of people above all on the Wii.

Really? Seriously now?

I mean, I'm not agreeing with FMT here, but woah now.

I'm sorry, but I do.

Suffers from too many things that I don't really like about this generation in terms of looks.
Just so... bland.
I'm not taking away from its amazing production values and scale, just, how it appeals to me on a visual level.

Meanwhile, this:

Holy crap! The colors, the vibrant nature of the scene, the attention to detail! This is game was nearly perfect in terms of visuals.

I was thinking about the WiiU and e3 recently and my hopes that I viewed as fairly possible were:

Retro Studios game
3D Mario teaser trailer (I don't expect it for a while, but just show a little gameplay and what will be cool about the next entry)
Pikmin 3
Decent third-party support (Lot of multiplatform ports and collections, some strategy games from PC thanks to the controller)
2-3 very innovative games (new IPs or revived franchises that are pretty different or just cool downloadable stuff)

Anything too optimistic or pretty grounded and realistic?

Well

I think using the word "stunning" which exists to describe things of striking beauty to describe 99% of video games (except SaGa Frontier 2) is hyperbole in the first place so trying to draw a line over which is more hyperbolic seems silly.

I'm sorry, but I do.

That part of Uncharted 2 always reminded me of Shenmue for some reason ;).

Those are two of the best looking games this gen tho for me i'd say the top 5 were -

1. Uncharted 3.
2. God of War 3.
3. Crysis 2.
4. Forza 4.
5. Heavy Rain.

Metroid Prime 3 is up there, man. Way up there.
Almost looking SMG right in the eye.

I saw it. Thought I was dreaming, really.

Anyways, one poster made a good point in saying that now is as good of a time to PC game, and I can't agree more.

Well, it's easy enough to say that now, when we know fuck all about "next-gen". I can't imagine everyone who's getting sick of Microsoft will be able to resist when the Nextbox gets shown off.

Ideally, yeah, PC and Wii U should be the way to go. You get to all the big 3rd party games (increasingly known as: "the big games"), you get to play Nintendo games. But it's a path you can't expect people to actually stick with. Hell, god knows I'll be getting a Wii U, and I know I'd be better off getting a decent PC but fuck it I'll probably end up with a PS4 because I love Sony's exclusives and it'll be calling me from the shelf, using that and "you don't have to buuuiiilllddd meeeeeeee" as a siren song.

I'm weak. We're all weak!

So, random question, none of you are expecting the WiiU to graphically match the coming next-gen consoles IF the trend of making more powerful hardware continues... Right? IMO it'd be crazy to expect it to be anywhere close to them for obvious reasons but what do I know... I'd like some thoughts :P

i'm saying if you literally find the graphics in any wii game "stunning" then i'm curious as to how you would describe even an average 360/ps3/pc game

I look at all games individually. Some games look good, some don't. I don't care about what system it's on. There are lots of factors to consider as well. The biggest of which is that this subject is entirely subjective. Either way, I never let the system a game is on color my judgement. I still think the original Rayman and AvP on the Jaguar were great looking games. On the flip side, I wasn't all that impressed with Halo 3.

Fairly realistic.

I think all of that has a good chance of happening, not sure about the big budget Mario game being there in any form.

Of course the Wii U won't match the PS4/Durango.
It's coming out 1-2 years earlier.

Heh, you took the most boring and bland picture ever from God of War 3 and compared it to one of the most vibrant areas from Uncharted 2. I'm on my phone, but:

Could easlily be a description used for GOW 3. Obviously it's all in the eye of the beholder, but if you're going to post pictures, at least give GOW 3 a fair shake.

How can Sony push the envelope in their current condition though???

Im the same, im sick to death of Uncharted, Halo, Gears of War, Motorstorm, Fable, Forza and Killzone ect just now but when the footage of them on the next gen consoles appears i will more than likely buy them both lol :p.

I just feel for people that have to play their next gen third party games on Wii U.

I wonder if developers will be allowed to disable or just show a simple item menu / map on the tablet display to get more performance out of the main screen ?.

Like I said earlier in this thread: zero expectations with regards to what I think it will be, specifically. But I know it won't come close to PS4/Nextbox.

Question is whether it's another Wii situation, or more of a Dreamcast. I don't want to think about that, I'd rather just wait and see.

i remember when i played the first god of war and decided the entire franchise was a waste of time when i beat it. those were simpler times. bush's second presidency was proceeding smoothly and everyone was groovin' to the tunes of green day's american idiot.

Oh yeah I absolutely understand that.

My line of thought, aside from that of course, is that if you consider these:
  • Price Under $300
  • Cost of Tablet Controller is high
  • 1 year, minimum, before the next-gen consoles

Its crazy to imagine the console matching. I think many people forget the cost of that screen and tablet is not low. I'd imagine its around 40-50+ to manufacture that. That's a lot of money that's being taken off the hardware of the actual system, so because of those reasons (and Nintendo being Nintendo) I don't expect a truly next-gen system, but an improved system from this generation with a feature-set for the next-gen ready, but underpowered.

I know this has probably been discussed a million times but I wanted to chat about it as I have no desire to do a paper :P

Actually I was thinking a Dreamcast scenario, albeit probably completely opposite in regards to success.

Ok, how about this:

Or this:
Or this:

I've looked through pages of GoW3 images, and honestly. They're all the same. Darkness with a bit of red.

I think it'll bemore competitive than many think though. Take one of the prettier PS3 games and use that as a baseline for the Wii U's first-party showcase games. I simply can't imagine that level of image quality being outright blown-out of the water when compared to one of the new others. The differences are going to be there, but they'll be much less dramatic.

Take someone looking at side-by-side images and saying, "yeahh.. I can see how that [the PS4] one is better." Could I see that? Sure. But we're not gonna have an Uncharted-versus-Car Vault situation again.

We're getting to the point where artistic vision/style matters more than technological ability. Anyone doing side-by-side comparison shots as an excuse to bash the system is looking only for an e-peen measurement merit badge.

Personally, I find games like God of War 3 fairly boring looking. Big production value, sure, but boring

Same for me. I see the game very bland and very "plastic" in graphics. It's like playing action figures with a controller. Most western games especially shooters have this same problem. Maybe that's why I'm dissapointed on the big 3rd party western multiplatform games. As for the colors, I don't need brown and dark colors everytime.

I need colors. I need a style on the artistic side which most PS3 and Xbox 360 games that I played don't. Most Xbox Live Arcade games gave me an alternative to the retail games and most have colors at least.

Yeah I agree with you about Uncharted.

Muramasa, Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 and Xenoblade are stunning Wii games.

have you ever played GOW3?

p.s. loved sotc when it came out and still love it today

No.
Played the first one, and didn't care for it. So I doubt I'll care for 3.
Again, though. I'm not taking away from its production values or scale.
This is purely, about how the game looks visually to me.
Bland. Boring. Completely uninteresting.

It's the age old story, a good art style will absolutely triumph over GRAPHIXSHHHHHH every single god damn time. So yes, Epic Yarn, Xenoblade and Super Mario Galaxy have every right to be considered some of the best looking titles of this generation.

How can Sony push the envelope in their current condition though???
They don't need to take a massive loss by including exotic or cutting-edge technology like Blu-Ray or Cell. If they play their cards right they could use essentially off the shelf parts to create a system that greatly outclasses Wii U without breaking the bank.
Sony will be willing to spend a bit of money on Playstation consoles because they're one of the only products they manufacture that are currently successful and turning a profit.

Actually I was thinking a Dreamcast scenario, albeit probably completely opposite in regards to success.

They even have a thing with a screen that interacts with the console! All we need is Sonic Adventure 3 at launch and we're all set
for Nintendo to go third party

If Pikmin 3 isn't a visual showcase for wii U, it'll be considered one of the biggest missed opportunities ever. There's so much you can do graphically with dirt, water, mud, grass, leaves, rain, etc.

Considering how much of its life was spent as a Wii game, it might not be as gorgeous as it could be.

Better. Well we will agree to disagree then, but I imagine you are In a very small minority that thinks GOW3 is not a stunning game graphically. In my opinion that is really the only thing the series has/had going for it, but that is a whole other discussion.

  • Get rid of their tv business
    Vita price drop
Skip next gen and wait for new gen
Hmm.. I'm going to be very interested in seeing how they cope.

Hey, business-savvy folks, I have a question: if Sony wanted to go movies and gaming-only and jettison most of their other divisions, how long can they go on like this before it's too late? There's gotta be a point of no return, right?
