I think we haven't speculated on one of the most important things for Nintendo's E3 conference this year...what song will be playing as we await their conference? I remember one of the conferences had Muse playing. I don't recall last year.
I predict the usual: thumpin' techno music!

It's going to be very fun watching reactions here at GAF as images from the next-gen consoles begin to roll-in. A noticeable number of people were overly critical about the PS3 & 360's early titles, claiming that they weren't much of a visual jump.. I wonder how people are going to handle the visual changes we see in this and next year's E3 conferences. Makes me wonder if there's going to be a bit of a shock on either side of the "diminishing/not diminishing" argument.

I don't think people will be that impressed, but I will and so will some others. Your right about the 360/PS3 launch, people said that the visual bump wasn't that great, and I remember being very impressed. I think most people always expect more then we get, the average gamer will always be dissapointed until we get gams that mirror real life. Personally I'm sure I will even be blown away by HD Nintendo games, let alone any possible supped-up Durango games.

That's impossible. Ubisoft would have to blow their HQ up for that to happen. Therefore, this set of rumours must be utterly false.

;)

*checks* You're right! I should add, though, that they can probably get a lot of the cruft* cut out of the GCN architecture which could drop the power consumption somewhat. So maybe they could reach 2TFLOPS on that same process at that same power draw. But this (as nearly everything I talk about here) is getting well above my particular level of knowledge.

* nerds still say "cruft", right?
I swear to God, I keep seeing that GCN acronym and think its about Gamecube. People, please.. Nintendo got rights to that years ago. Think of something else to call.. whatever it is you are talking about there.

First of all, the Xbox was too late to the party and too much of a new guy to ever gain a majority share of the market during that generation. Second, most developers at the time had prepared to move to the PS2 and were already having success so there wasn't enough change or motivation to take a chance of moving the majority of their resources to Xbox/GCN, therefore most third-party exclusives were developed for PS2 and most multiplatform title's lead platform was PS2.

Same thing can basically be said for the 360 with the PS3 this generation.

And all I am saying is that it is possible the same thing could be said about the Wii U and 720/PS4 next generation.

Ha, sorry! I sort of do that on purpose nowadays. This is why I would really like for Nintendo to suddenly up and say "By the way, we're using Southern Islands for our gpu despite what was in the devkits". Because we can say that they used "GCN architecture" for three consoles in a row! :D

Oh god, it's finally happening. I've been lurking this thread like a madman because I adore this sort of discussion even if everything falls flat come reveal time and I'm getting to the point where I start dreaming about Nintendo's E3 conference because I'm just so darn excited about it.

I dreamt that the conference was today and I was late for watching the event, so I hurry over to my tv and the conference starts. Everything goes normally and fine for a while, Reggie on stage and that jazz and all of a sudden he says that he's gonna mix up this year's conference by making it interactive. Then some scantily clad women bring out a panel decorated with NES Mario 1 question blocks, and every block represents a E3 reveal. People in the audience are asked to search out for panels hidden around the auditorium, and every goal achieved related to panel collection will reveal a new product. Everyone in the audience immediately goes batshit insane and music starts playing and the whole pandemonium basically turns into a rave, Reggie standing just there, at the front, unfazed and calm.

Ever dreamt about Nintendo at E3, GAF?

I know I'll be pretty easy to impress, even by the U's lowly hardware.

But why this obsession with matching real life? I still don't get it..

I want your dream to come true, the stampedes would be amazing.

The gap between Vita and 3DS seems notably larger than the DS and PSP gap..

No, its actually smaller. Out of interest what gave you the impression it was larger?

Just to compare a few details:

Polygon counts, DS could display about 122,000 per second, PSP about 10m per second (81x DS pps). Where as 3DS can do about 18-20m and Vita 133m (6-7x 3DS pps).

For RAM DS had 4MB, PSP had 32MB (8x DS memory). 3DS has 128MB and Vita has 640MB (5x 3DS memory).

The Vita would still have been an impressive system if it were only slightly more powerful than the 3DS, however the power level that it's at now is simply overkill as that is ultimately what has made the price so high. How can you say it'd have performed worse by being more powerful than the 3DS, with better controls and games for a lower price?

Lastly, no. The 3DS is around PS2/GC level of specs, that means it's a natural progression from the DS/N64/PS1 level systems. It's what you'd expect.

Honestly, I disagree you. The gap between Vita and 3DS just look really smaller than DS and PSP gap. Just look at Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil Revelations, or Dead or Alive Dimensions. It can match with the Vita in some ways. While the best looking DS games not even match with the worst looking PSP games.

I don't either, but I think it's what the average consumer wants. Personally I think if games start looking real, it will just get creepy, and a little unnerving. I would like to see a Pixar-like game once in my life, but that's my limit.

What lesson would they have learned from the PS3 and Vita? The PS3's price had a lot more to do with being a Blu-ray player than it did with the power of the console. And the Vita's problem has very little to do with the power. The sales wouldn't be much different had they gone with a less powerful but cheaper system. The games are the problem.

Maybe in the western market a cheaper and less-expensive to devlop for Vita wouldn't of made much of a difference, but I believe it would of made a huge difference in the eastern market. A bunch of titles that were PSP exclusive have been moved to 3DS instead of the Vita, which I believe has a lot to do with entry price for customers along with higher development costs. I fully believe that a 3DS-level upgrade to the PSP with a focus on social-aspects and unique casual software would of resulted in a cheaper system, cheaper dev costs, potential ports of third-party 3DS titles, software that potentially stands out (depending on the innovations implemented into the system), and a better chance to succeed in all regions IMO.

I hope the main lesson that Sony learned from the Vita and PS3 is that it can't survive of name-brand alone, and needs to offer compelling innovations, a friendlier development process, and a lower entry price so it CAN potentially get compelling (unique) software to set itself apart and sell systems with.

A graphics race with Microsoft will result in an even worst predicament for the PS4 compared to the PS3.

And very likely lethal.

Come, let's do the hype dance together.

"Power" by Kanye West. The lyrics will be slightly changed:

"No one console should have too much power..."

Huh, what did he say?
Technically what was said is that it's a game more aimed at the "dudebro" crowd.
Retro has said it's not DK and Alberto said it's not Zelda.
So it's either Metroid or another revival. I wouldn't bet on a completely new IP but who knows.

Just to compare polygon counts, DS could display about 122,000 per second, PSP about 10,000,000 per second (81x DS pps). Where as 3DS can do about 20,000,000 and Vita 133,000,000 (6.6x 3DS pps).

For RAM DS had 4MB, PSP had 32MB (8x DS memory). 3DS has 128MB and Vita has (5x 3DS memory).

512 is 4x.

Thanks.

I hope its not a COD clone

See my edit above. It's not Metroid either.

Edit: actually says MP, so it can still be new Metroid game methinks.

Really hope it's not Metroid. At the same time, I hope they can court the core audience without doing anything resembling a cynical Halo/CoD/GoW clone.

I wouldn't mind them giving a new dudebro IP a shot, particularly at the start of a generation.

Who knows, it might end up being the Goldeneye to the Wii U's N64.

I wouldn't mind it being a really dark parody of dudebro gaming, but I somehow don't see Nintendo going in that direction.

If that Unreal 4 screen is legit?

Stop freaking BurntPork. WiiU will be able to run UE4 maybe without the fancy lighting techniques. Other than that? Huge jump it is not.

I'm surely late with this...
but...
that's the biggest selling point of the engine. Full dynamic lighting. The ability to make a game, throw in light sources, and not have to worry about the long and treacherous road that is called "light baking" is what makes this engine different. That along with its heavy volumetric particles.

EDIT: Herped so hard I derped. What are sentences!?

I'm hoping for something along the lines of Freedom Fighters with a great story and awesome online multiplayer.
Is it bad that whenever I hear "Freedom Fighters" I think of that old Sonic cartoon?

I mean, I know you're referring to that 6th-generation game I never played, but still.

IGN put up its second survey of what 62,000 gamers want out of the next-generation. Overall, the results for the Wii U were poor. Click the link for to see the rest of the coverage.

So did DQ IX put the DS over-the-top as selling so ridiculously well, or was it already printing money by that point?
DQ IX was announced for the DS about a year after it started selling like crazy in Japan. By the time IX actually arrived it was past its peak and just doing really really well.

Did you have TechTv on cable? Could have watched it there.
Oh man, yeah. That's the first place I remember seeing Iwata and being charmed by his thick accent.

After seeing the pictures of UE4, I must say that this not running on Wii U would be more shocking than actually running on it - even if this means they have to turn down some shaders and shit.

Honestly, I wonder about IGN's reader base. I wonder if Nintendo fans left after Matt and Bozon did, or when IGN started following the popular trend of Nintendo doomsaying.

Not a coincidence that fan-run Nintendo news sites have jumped in popularity over this past generation.

I remember this poll. I remember commenting on this thread about the bias.

What Motion Controls do you use?

PS Move
Xbox Kinect
Wii Waggle

With questions like that, is it any wonder that you get those kinds of results?
