So were devs aware of the new Pro controller? If not, I wonder if this will change their tune at all.

actually.... I already know the answer to that questions.

«As we mentioned last year, sometimes you can continue playing from the game pad even when the tv screen is being used for something else. This might occur with more casual games when you are in the middle of your Wii fit routine or when you intend to spend many hours deeply immersed in your game.

And others ??? to let you have the TV to yourself for all that time.

And in any of these situations not only will you see high quality console graphics on the big screen tv, but those images can be displayed on the wii u gamepad without delay, something no existing handheld game devices can do.

Wii u will support all your previous forms of wii control, including the wii remote, the nunchuk controller and the wii balance board. For those who are mainly interested in multi-platform games with more traditional means of control, we will also offer the Wii U Pro Controller as a separate peripheral, which is lighter and maybe more attractive for longer, more intense forms of gaming

Although some people may wonder if Wii U is a simple evolution of Wii or something entirely different. I think maybe the best answer is "Both". In 2006, Wii changed the way friends and family interacted in the living room. One way we thought about this was turning the living room into a kind of playground and that play could also be expanded to distant locations. While many Wii games were single player, probably the most memorable experiences came when people would play together. Today, Wii U does what we did, only better. And at the same time it is also something entirely new. Not only can it connect people in a better way in the same living room, but it also connects people living room to living room in a much more compelling way.

By this point, I think maybe it's better to show you an example rather than continue to explain. And in the spirit of creating something unique, I think maybe the following is not what you normally imagine when you hear the term "game video" [motions to start awkward grandpa/coffee reel]

I'm working on that one "???" part. Anybody got an idea?
Might be too late on this but what he says is others aren't willing.

So is Miiverse like... a forum? I'm still trying to grasp the concept.

It's kind-of a mix between realtime chat and a forum. Iwata described it as communicating through time and space :) If you say something, then log off, and I turn on my Wii-U, I may see your Mii saying that thing. If I'm already looking at the screen and you say something, I'll see it immediately. This is a feature I'm deathly afraid of - imagine every time you turn on your Wii-U it's like reading the IGN or GameFAQs forums. Only worse because half the people are just drawing dicks. Because it's not just your friends, it's everyone in your nation that is playing the most popular games, or the games you are playing.

IdeaMan posted that the most recent dev kits came with a controller similar to the Classic Controller Pro, that could plug into the system into the same devkit ports as the Gamepad controllers; this was most likely the new Pro Controller.

Wii Remote + and Nunchuk will come with the system. There is no doubt of that.

And no, I don't think the controller's symmetrical layout is going to result in the end of days, nor do I think having staggered sticks is somehow God's way when the PlayStation line has featured it from the beginning.

I predict that it will take less than an hour for even the biggest layout whiners to adjust to it. If people have problems distinguishing between the left and right sides of their bodies, that has more severe implications than their possible inability to own noobs in the latest FPS title.

EDIT: Miiverse isn't going to have everyone in your nation talking - there's going to be some base analytics that leads this or that person to show up. Even the Mii Parade on the Wii didn't summon everyone it possibly could have. Also, I would not be at all surprised if you could turn off Strangers' comments while leaving Friends' viewable. You might still see a huge mass of people around a particular game title and be able to select them individually to see their Activity Feed at will.

So Nintendo is expanding their audience even further?

Kidding. But I am sure Nintendo will allow us to filter that stuff out somehow.

The big question is if the Select button actually functions on the Wii U. It doesn't on the 3DS. It's literally another Start button.

Pretty sure it's just there for virtual console functionality.

N64 and GC dropped the select button. It really is useless.

This is false. It is frequently used as a second start button but it is in fact separate in hardware function. See: Super Mario Bros. (NES)

Dropping "useless" buttons that your competitors use after making sure your controller matches their feature set is stupid.

Do PS3 and 360 games use the select button? I honestly don't know, I don't play my PS3 and my 360 has been my UMVC3 and Dark Souls machine for the past year.

As far as I know 3DS games (not virtual console games) are unable to use the select button. I believe a developer posted on GAF and I've yet to play a game where Select was different from Start.

A few games make use of the button at least on the 360. Lots of multiplayer games use it to pull up the scoreboard. In Fallout 3 you use it to change the time of day unless I'm remembering wrong. I can't think of any other examples at the moment.

Gamexplain is an amazing website. Peach's castle and the speculation of having the background objects slowly get bigger or smaller astounding progress through the game would have totally sailed by me were it not for their video.

Quoting with the hopes that Andre sees this. Hope that being there on Tuesday is as cool as it seems like it's gonna be.

Yes. Scoreboard. That's right.

Honestly, that's probably the most sensible use for it nowadays.

Oh riiiiiiiiiiiiight

I guess it's necessary then. Pretty sure it won't be getting much use for first party Nintendo games, though.
and that's all that really matters

I see the gaming side threads are starting to heat up, and someone went up against bish of all people to get banned

The King of Games has no real interest in these consoles, though he is curious to see what shows up.

What they show was pretty close to what I expected, the plaza aspect and community, the need for a small controller but the mario sequence took me by surprise, I really liked what I saw. The background and the map had a sense of magnitude well done and it was looking like some undiscovered forest. Like I wanted in the nsmb 2 thread, a refined style with the need for really new locations, they are listening to me!

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.

^^

That NFC logo depicts a card being held up to the device. Also in the video Iwata says "...you can place cards or figures on this..." Does this info point to the rumors of the "Gamer Card" for Wii U being true?

I took the card remark as more playing card type cards, or being able to instantly apply points (or money) to your account by just tapping the point card on the controller instead of typing in a long code. I could also see it being used for NFC capable cell phones and credit cards for payments instead of having that information stored on a server somewhere.

I'm really not a big fan of the NFC reader's location. Seems very unintuitive.

It's a lot better then directly in the middle of the screen like we seen in the leaked Rayman trailer. It shouldn't be too much of a hassle though since you should only need to touch whatever it is there for a few moments. I'm assuming most games won't have you using NFC figurines or cards in the heat of battle.

How exactly does it work? Can you just hold whatever you're scanning close to the Upad or do you have to put it on that exact spot?

I believe it needs to be within centimeters of the reader so you pretty much have to touch whatever it is your scanning to the controller.

EDIT: Damn, sorry for the double post. :-/
