They put out a big press release about the music.

Fans of THE WONDER YEARS will thrill to the extensive list of cleared music, which includes 285 modern day classics and instrumentals such as "Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season)" by The Byrds, "Louie Louie" by The Kingsmen, "Sunshine of Your Love" by Cream, Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'," The Trogg's "Wild Thing," "Good Vibrations" and "Wouldn't it Be Nice" by The Beach Boys, "My Girl" by The Temptations and hundreds of others! Including the 116 clearances of the theme "With a Little Help from My Friends," the total number of cleared songs is 401!

"There are a handful of songs we were unable to clear the rights to, but the DVDs contain over 96% of the original songs from the episodes."

The link has a list of songs cleared for each episode. It's too bad they couldn't get them all, but they did a pretty good job clearing as many songs as they did.

I'm wondering what songs they couldn't clear.

We've got an answer now.

"NO scenes were cut; and in each case we replaced the music with similar music, most of it supplied by Fox"

The studio points out that "In several cases the replacement song is nearly indistinguishable from the original (e.g. "Spinning Wheel" by Blood, Sweat & Tears vs. "Spinning Wheel" by David Clayton Thomas, who of course was the lead singer of Blood, Sweat & Tears).

The studio also notes that if fans purchase the DVDs are aren't happy, then they can return them.

14 uncleared songs from 12 episodes is pretty good, considering all the music the series had.
