watching this now on fox.com and I feel like episode 2 is a little disconnect from episode 1. Episode 2 just starts like old times a new case. A little disjointing to just launch into a case.

It feels a little removed but the familiarity of a standard case is just what this show needed after Episode 1.

I want to know Skinner's diet/exercise regimen because the guy hasn't aged a bit in nearly 15 years.

Of course, he hasn't been promoted during that time either, but still...
Nano machines still in his blood stream, he has them go through and clean out his arteries after he killed krychek

Fake edit: wait don't tell me they are resurrecting krychek too :/

Watching now and it's some of the worst acting I've ever seen.

Its terrible. His voice too, it doesnt even sound that grungy in real life. I dont get it. I dont understand how someone can be that bad. Even Harrison ford as an example wasnt too keen on being Han Solo again, but god damnit was he good in EP7. Its like he never stopped.

Here, it just feels like they don't wanna be there. Its sad cause hes great in the old ones. Really stains this season for me. Kinda wish they hadn't done it if theyre going to be like this.

It definitely feels more like 'fine I'll do this one more time' rather than 'I'm happy I get to do this again'

I don't get these complaints. Mulder and Scully were always kind of dour, and they're trying to find these characters again after so long.

I admit I might be making excuses though.

Sure but I think they are just worse at it now, whether it's a lack of effort or just the passage of time who knows. I do have a feeling they will jump back to life in the comedy episode because they know that will be memorable one.

Are people really complaining about Duvchony's monotone voice? I can understand this if you're new to the X-Files, but if your at all familiar to the show you know that is his shtick for the entire run of the series.

I've recently been rewatching the first season and my wife (who is relatively unfamiliar with the show) constantly companies about Mulder's monotone voice.

Yeah it seems like he's acting in the wrong octave or something.

I'm reasoning his bad acting by thinking there's no way the light hearted perky Mulder exists anymore. After all this time, and how the Internet has made conspiracy theories even more of a mockery, there's just no way he would be himself or as engaged. He's more or less lived a tortured existence.

They were never this bad. Im watching the old ones on netflix, have been for the passed few months. Mulder and scully are never terrible. I never once thought: God damn this acting is terrible. But this one, its constant.

I thought that too, but it never comes off that way. espcially him being dressed all GQ all the time.

I'm afraid to go back now. The only thing I noticed was a general sense of awkwardness I chalk up to trying to get back into it.

Needs to be quoted.

Some of the plots of the old series could be campy nonsense, and less so some of the dialogue. But the acting was always spectacular. So much so, several episodes that should have been laughed at as terrible were sold just by their effort.

These two so far are missing the mark. Someone said it before, but it feels like more of a parody of the XFiles, rather than a continuation.

Hell, Jimmy Kimmel bit with them felt better, and it was a parody skit.

I'll go against the grain. I've been watching the original series on Netflix - pushed through the first 3 seasons so far, but watched the first 2 episodes of S10. The acting isn't as good but it's still more than good enough. I imagine things will improve over time as they get into their molds of Mulder and Scully again as well.

Ep 1 was pretty clunky as to be expected, but ep 2 was a solid case.

It's never going to be the same show or the same quality, but ep 2 shows they can still make good episodes.

I wish it was 4:3 and fuzzy though. The way God intended.

Maybe it's also the contrast to other stuff he did since then. They both speak in a lower voice, but I really think that's deliberate. I remember them both commenting a scene from the pilot with how high pitched their voices were back then. Anderson apparently really likes her German voice which is much deeper than her real voice.

Gillian: You know, the german voice sounds really good - she’s got a really deep kind of strong.... (source)

Stumbled upon this article with an interesting quote regarding another season:

Variety said:
She’s also ready for more, regardless of ratings. “We would commit to new episodes right now, today, in advance of our launch. We are excited creatively by what we’ve seen. These episodes are incredibly consistent with the original series.”

The catch, once again, is scheduling. Duchovny is shooting season two of “Aquarius,” while Anderson is back at work on season three of “The Fall” before heading to Broadway in the spring for “A Streetcar Named Desire.”

“Gillian and I have talked about (doing more episodes), and then we just stop because we get to 2023 and we still haven’t found a date we can do it,” Duchovny says. “It’s like, ‘Let’s just wait and see what happens after this,’ and then we can start to talk seriously about whether we can make it work again.”

Im glad the ratings are high. There really inst much like the Xfiles on TV now, but if it does come back for more seasons, id ike to see vince gilligan come back too. Keep it 6-8 episodes and go all out.

The show just has a easier time to hit its notes when its MOTW than a mythology episode.

I think its easier to do a good MOTW episode than myth.

I am psyched for next episode, it looked exactly like the shit i love about this show.

That was a good episode.

To sum up my views so far :

The premiere should have been a two hours special, they crammed too much into one episode and it felt rushed, the writing itself wasn't as bad as reviewers made it out to be. Delivery and editing made it "below average". Still OK though, nothing too bad.

Now this episode... It was good. Interesting. The dreams sequences were handled a bit awkwardly, the alien allusions were also unnecessary. It was decent. Not crazy good.

But jesus, Duchovny. . . I love the guy, I make a lot of excuses for him, his delivery is just really ""bad"" ? I can't put my finger on it. His voice is terrible in this, he seemed to have aged the most out of everyone else too. His funny one liners don't work at all because of the delivery only. (Mulder was never actually funny, he was funny thanks to delivery, but now it's just crappy dad jokes level on first degree)

I am still in, I absolutely understand that it's hard to "get back into it".

Episode 2 was much better in terms of pacing. They just have to sort out Duchovny's acting and they're good to go.

As clunky as this is, I still enjoy watching this more than 90% of the other procedural bullshit shows.

I also don't understand why both Mulder and Scully look so weird on the show. They both look great in person, but on the show they both look oddly older and worn down. And not in an natural, aging way. Scully's wig is definitely a part of it, it does not look great.

One thing is very obvious, all the PR shots that have been released of them in the last few months are VERY heavily touched up.

The first episode was super rough, but I enjoyed the second one. I am sticking with and hope it really finds its footing.

Er that's completely irrelevant.

Both David and Gillian look better in real life than they do in the show. Hell they were both great in the Jimmy Kimmel inteview.

That's what we are talking about.

Yeah, that's the one thing I thought was strange. We see David and Gillian in tons of other forms of media and they don't look anywhere near as tired/worn in those as they do for the X-Files. Was it a conscious choice?

When they had the flashbacks, I was like "holy shit, that's THEM again, but it's NEW". Gillian especially.

I like Joel Mchale but can't really take him seriously in this role. Maybe it'll get better. Or maybe the casting could have been better. I feel like the casting could have been better.

In this we are brothers.

I'm just watching The X-Files related stuff on YouTube right now.

I've still got about 10 classic episodes saved on my PVR, so I'll watch those.

I have the DVD sets, but there's not enough time to watch the entire thing in a week (haha), and I want to save my next rewatch for Blu-ray. I just can't justify spending $260-300 on them when they were recently on sale for $100 total.

Just watched episode one and hated it. The acting was bad, and Duchovnhy (sp?) couldn't come across as less interested if he tried. And the exposition. Endless exposition. Jesus.

And I was a big fan when it started in the 90's. Disappointed.

Also, I don't remember the score being that overwrought. Every single dull scene was drowning in moody synths.

I'll give episode 2 a shot but things aren't looking good.

For the first time in my life I'm okay with Fox's "let's fuck with the episode order" signature move.

I guess we might see the transition between Mulder and Scully receiving Skinner's text and them investigating their first new case in the fourth episode...

I don't like the idea that they shuffled episodes around. Won't that fuck with things?

My guess is Fox took the pre-release criticism to heart and went with the most "classic X-Files" episode second to put everyone at ease. I can't blame them if that's the case.

But it will be easier to judge the move once we've seen the episode that got bumped.

Was there a lot of criticism from that mass viewing they did at ComicCon? I didn't hear much of really look into it.

I'm talking more about actual critics who created a negative buzz around the premiere. Apparently Fox immediately sent them more episodes, which would include the episode that was meant to be fifth.

I was finally able to watch the two episodes today and even though I was left pretty cold by the premiere, I'm now pretty excited to see what's to come.

This is becoming an echo chamber but my first impression is that Duchovny and Anderson are having some trouble getting into Mulder and Scully again, I mean I watched "I want to believe" in anticipation for the series and even then they seemed to be more in character and to have better chemistry than in here. They seemed a lot better in the second episode though which is good.

The premiere had some really, REALLY flagrant problems from too much of a quick pacing passing through an incredibly on-your-face (supposed) retcon of most of the original series' mythology to some poorly written and acted scenes (the porch sequence was...uncomfortable to say the least) but ultimately worked just fine to set up the basic premise that a) There is still some big conspiracy involving alien tech/DNA though no invasion and b) Mulder and Scully are back into the FBI and X-Files.

The second episode was pretty great though, getting the status quo back and the characters playing into their usual dynamics didn't just feel right for nostalgia reasons (Skinner debriefing Mulder and Scully almost got me misty eyed) but also made for a quite decent chapter in general lines. I loved how they were able to mix the classical MoTW structure with a just slight enough touch of mythology to make this an effective stand-alone chapter while being also connected to the overarching story. The pool scene was super creepy and the kid
breathing underwater and having telekinetik powers was a great callback to the OG alien/human hybrids
. The dream scenes were a little bit weird though, and my mind is still trying to reconcile the X-Files with the pristine image and the overabundance of colors but aside from that I can barely wait until the next episodes come up.

I am not impressed with their decision to focus on gore. It's a insult to the audience's intelligence. Maybe if they spent that fake blood money on better CGI birds the show wouldn't feel so dated.

Second episode would've made a sub par edition of fringe. If we get one good episode out of this where they actually seem to want to all be in the same room as each other, then ok.

If we have more than the third episode to look forward to, well yeah that'll be really good too.

This doesn't make me want a whole series though.

God Lynch better not fuck up twin peaks.

I just thought of an alternate, less retconny way to arrive at the new status quo. You experts tell me if it would have worked.

The plan to colonize Earth was a last ditch effort by the Greys. They are a dying breed without a sustainable homeworld.

The Syndicate's plan to create a vaccine against Black Oil succeeded, as such The Greys are no longer a threat to them.

Having successfully broken free of the Greys's influence over them, the Syndicate have been able to focus on their own nefarious plans for the past several years, which brings us to the new conspiracy.

Oh and the Syndicate turned into the New Syndicate at some point after the original gang was killed. Cancer Man still pulling the strings. I guess there are plenty more plot holes you would have to patch...
