good episode...I got this nostalgic feeling from Californication
when Mulder took that indian escort dude to "talk"

I just thought of an alternate, less retconny way to arrive at the new status quo. You experts tell me if it would have worked.

The plan to colonize Earth was a last ditch effort by the Greys. They are a dying breed without a sustainable homeworld.

The Syndicate's plan to create a vaccine against Black Oil succeeded, as such The Greys are no longer a threat to them.

Having successfully broken free of the Greys's influence over them, the Syndicate have been able to focus on their own nefarious plans for the past several years, which brings us to the new conspiracy.

Oh and the Syndicate turned into the New Syndicate at some point after the original gang was killed. Cancer Man still pulling the strings. I guess there are plenty more plot holes you would have to patch...

I was thinking about this and well, it's simply hard to justify because this is the writers trying to get out of the corner they put themselves in.

There are some things that can be easily rationalized, I can believe that the bounty hunters/faceless and super soldier aliens were all genetic experiments who thought they were being either controlled or fighting against the Colonists and I can see the colonization itself being a hoax created to keep certain players chasing ghosts, however, the events of the first movie make the whole thing being a smokescreen a really, really though pill to swallow. The first movie was made to make sense of most of the mythology stuff that was hanging loose and went ballistic in many ways, how do you explain all the bees carrying the black oil? How do you explain members of the syndicate obviously believing in the invasion to the point of dying in order to safeguard the vaccine? How do you explain the black oil itself? How do you explain the Greys actually erupting from peoples' bodies in front of Mulder? Sure, there might exist the possibility of ALL of that being some elaborate play created by some higher power through experimentation with alien DNA/tech instead of an actual invasion but it definitely is at the breaking point of challenging the audience's suspension of disbelief, even for this series.

They seem to be going in that direction though, as Mulder said that the Syndicate tried to colonize Earth with hybrids and Scully insinuated that what they wanted was to force human evolution, also, Mulder kind of implied that the Greys were actually good and simply monitoring us until humans got their hand into their tech, we don't know if this is speculation or some legitimate info he got from the doctor who appeared in the premiere. Your version is as good as any, but the writers seem to be reformulating things instead of working with the existent mythology. We can't really know until we get more info. In the end it works in the benefit of the series, the mythology was a convoluted mess in the later seasons and going back to a more mystery/conspiracy angle instead of an alien invasion plot which the showrunners are never going to realistically be able to fulfill will probably be better in the long run.

what if mulder secretly suspects that the news guy is a plant/operative to put him off of the truth that he previously sought but is playing along to see what he can get out of it and piece it together?

Last night's episode was way better than Sunday's. I'm still early on in the show on Netflix, but I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of this miniseries now.

Episode 2 was actually kind of awesome. A lot more to the point and less packed than the first episode, even if the dream sequences or whatever were a little hokey.

he's been not completely forthcoming with her before. there were several episodes about trust. if he feels she's any way in jeopardy, he won't clue her in until he needs to, as he has done before

Fair point but think back to the scene where Mulder is telling Scully about the new conspiracy. He sounds like he's having a legitimate epiphany right there on the phone.

Again, it's not impossible but I don't think this is where Carter is headed right now.

Yeah, he also said that he had suspected that the colonization was an hoax for some time, especially after meeting that doctor around 2006. The things he saw in the premiere seemed more like a confirmation rather than a 180 degree change in perspective.

First episode was the definition of MEH. Borderline insulting how they try to reverse all the alien mythology. I mean what the heck was that?

2nd episode actually was decent. Interesting story, felt like classic X-Files. Also that was like a secret sequel to EVE then? Anyway im still enjoying the series. Pure nostalgia-driven as it is.

At the insistence of some friends, I ended up watching both eps. That 1st ep was some Kojima-esque Patriots garbage. So you fake some elaborate massive alien colonization conspiracy to cover up a regular old Illuminati conspiracy? Whatever dudes.

Fortunately, second ep felt like a nice comfortable MOTW. It felt really nice to see them back in the suits. Bring on more of that and I'll be happy.

Actually the New Syndicate was lead by the Toothpick Man who was an Alien Supersoldier. Cancer Man was thought to be dead as Krycek was thought to have killed him at the end of season 7.

My theory is that colonization is still being planned but it was delayed either to discredit Mulder or due to some other reason. I hope this theory pans out as I do not like the new angle and it contradicts what we already know and expect.

Was there actually a New Syndicate in later seasons? I can't even remember. I guess that's what the Super Soldiers were...

I could see this being the big twist in My Struggle 2: My Struggle Harder.

If so, it must be hell for Carter to remain silent as a portion of fans bitch about the colonization retcon.

Have any of the reviewers seen all six episodes? Couldn't remember how many folks were actually given.

Also, if they indeed switched episode 4 and put it yesterday, it's going to be a weird comeback episode when it finally occurs.

No, they were given 3. First they were only going to give out the first episode. Then the reviews came out. Then they said "OH SHIT!" and gave them the next 2 episodes.

Although oddly enough, on the Nerdist podcast with David Duchovny that was recorded yesterday, Chris Hardwick said Fox gave him all of the episodes, so maybe they've given the rest out since the first one aired. But current reviews are only for the first 3.

lol why would they do this?! makes no sense.

James Wong says Fox had a reason to do it:

This iteration's first monster-of-the-week episode, which did not technically include any monster, was originally intended as No. 5. But when Fox had the entire series in the can, it was decided that "Founder's Mutation" would kick off the stand-alones. "It has thematic connections to Chris' first episode, so they put it in second position," writer and director James Wong — or, Jim, as he's better known — told The Hollywood Reporter in December. "I'm really happy with it."

If that was the reason, or if it was just Fox being Fox, I don't think it matters. It was a smart decision. It was a really good episode that helped turn critical response for the series around. I just hope the eventual Blu-Ray presents everything in the intended order.

LiQuid!

I proudly and openly admit to wishing death upon the mothers of people I don't like
The forced current event references in both episodes so far has been kind of irritating but holy god damn I didn't realize how much I missed watching X-Files. Renew this shit, Fox.

The horrible news being that if this was the penultimate episode, then that Duchovny delivery is permanent for this mini series.

Urgh. Still will watch.

At this point I don't really care if it's good or bad, I love the settings and I miss the characters, so I'm in no matter what. But jesus David.

Finally caught up with the episodes, so far it's exactly what I expected. Chris Carter lost it a long time ago and I don't expect anything good from him. There is a lot of other talent attached to the series though and I expect the trend of MotW outclassing the mytharc episodes to continue. It's a shame because I really enjoyed the mythology during the first four seasons of the show but it's been a jumbled mess for so long and Carter insists on sticking with it, making it even more convoluted and tiresome in the process. If this gets a full series I really hope Carter takes a step back and hands someone else the reins. I know it won't happen but man, what we've come to expect from television has really passed him by.

I'd have to agree with you, the first four seasons were my favourite by far. It progressively got worse the more it went on. I don't really know how Fox could even approach it though "He we love that your show is back, ratings are great, but if you could not write, direct or be involved with it anymore? that'd be great."

honestly the creepiest part of the episode was the founder's wife. something about the shape of her face and the way her eyes moved scared the shit out of me.

She looked normal in flashbacks which was weird, it was in the ward where they made her look freaky, I think it was part odd jawline next to the frizzy long hair plus the fact they lit it so it didn't look like she had teeth. Original series also had a bunch of odd looking one off casting choices.

I remembered not liking Bad Blood and thinking that it was dumb, but it's not. I just watched it again, and it's a really solid episode.

You're damn right it is. Nothing beats Dreamland I & II for comedy eps though. McKean stole the show, unsurprisingly.

They already did.

There was no invasion planned. That was a smoke screen to subdue Mulder's quest for the truth and hide the real truth that a shadow government were using acquired alien technology to plan their own take over. The 2012 date may have been some sort of mobilization date for that.

The aliens had no designs on invasion, at least in the conventional sense. It's obvious that the black oil was up to something nefarious as it controlled the shape shifting grey alien bounty hunters. Then there was the group that was fighting against them, the ones who sowed their eyes and mouths shut.

That makes no sense when we saw the Syndicate planning for the invasion
