Yeah, except for all the cross-country skiers failing, everything is going as planned so far.

We'll get a bunch more medals in the short-track, hopefully 1 or 2 in curling, 2 in hockey and then a couple little extras here and there (skeleton maybe or bobsleigh).

What's going on in luge? The cbc site has been sitting with summer britcher up next for about 15 minutes now. Is there a break?

Honestly, curling should be more of a definite than (men's) hockey. Canada has won 2 curling medals at every Olympics so far (not counting 1924)

Most golds = winning, no? Canada has enough top flight people that they could come close.
Definitely a possibility. Norway is really going pile up the cross country gold medals. They're the team to beat.

Canada really needs to win the team sports and hopefully get some nice surprises in races, but I don't think they're favored in a lot of events. Saw some predictions that Canada could win 30+ medals, that would be extremely good, but just how many of those will be gold is the big question.

The world has gotten a lot better. No canadian curling medals would be a shock, but gold definitely not easy.

Will Canada finally medal in Luge?

Great run by Alex, but one of the top three are gonna have to fuck it up hard to drop behind her, unfortunately. Probably not gonna happen. 4th and 5th finish in luge is amazing for Canada, in any case.

I hope Kim and Alex are given the recognition they deserve from CBC for this. They should be brought into the studio and all that.

Historical dominance...

Netherlands now has 90 olympic medals in speed skating.
Norway now has 102 olympic medals in cross country skiing. (that's not including biathlon)
Austria now has 107 olympic medals in alpine events.

...and counting.

In comparison...
US best is 67 in speed skating.
Canada's best is 33 in speed skating.

Given the number of events, best comparison is to athletics and swimming.

This isn't the US. Our Athletes get very little support. I remember a Gold medal winner from the 2008 summer games who said he had no sponsors and only made 28,000 a year after winning gold.

American gold medalists usually become millionaires or close to it. Guys like Michael Phelps, Shaun White are multi-millionaires.

US has a great history with amateur sports. Canada does not. Hell, considering how popular hockey is, barely anyone follows the junior leagues.

Whereas in US, NCAA basketball and football are the stuff of GODS!

So many things wrong with this post.

First, Canada implemented a program for 2010 (and onward) called Own the Podium which significantly increased federal investment into athletes.

Second, Summer games is not where the federal investment is in for Canada. Winter athletes earn a lot more on average.

Third, Junior Hockey is the most popular non-professional sports league in Canada.

Fourth, you are comparing it to NCAA Basketball and NCAA Football which are more popular than the professional sports due to the college/university culture of the US.

Fifth, Canada has 1/10th the population of the United States. So when you compare sports attendance, you have to do it per capita.
