It sucks to see the game end like that. I don't understand power plays, but for the US that's a classic choke job. Great game. I feel bad for the US women. That's going to sting for a loooooong time.

That was an epic game. I really had given up by the end of the 2nd. I won't make that mistake again.
Edit: Is women's hockey still on the bubble like it was prior to Sochi?

Damn it, was very close match, but on second thought hell of 'long' game. Canada didn't get discouraged ...

So bad ass. USA sorry, but great game

They would have like 30 medals including 12 or so gold if the entire speedskating team and now the women's hockey team didn't fail to show up when it mattered.

They are the ones training for 4 years and having to live with their perfomances for the rest of their lives. All of you have to do is turn off the tv and go on with your day.

Indeed.

There are a set number of elements that have to be performed and each element is graded on difficulty and quality of completion (posture, landing, etc) Sotnikova won because she went for a much more complicated series of jumps and successfully pulled them off. I'd of thought after the excellent display she put in yesterday it would hardly of come as a surprise that she was going to pull out all the stops. Given she'd effectively been overshadowed by Lipnitskaya during the build up she didn't really have anything to lose.

So much salt, Sotnikova's program was nothing short of breathtaking, you fools.

Botched landings and shitty steps is world record worthy now? She was overscored yesterday as well, that's the consensus.

US Women showed pathetic defense the last 10 minutes of the 3rd.

There was no excuse in that one scenario letting one Canadian skater slice and dice between 4 US skaters to get right on the door step and score.

When the US Women couldn't get the puck in after that initial flurry to start OT, I knew it was over.

Woooooo!

CANADA! CANADA!

I'm not sure about that last penalty call. It's like they both fell on the shitty ice at the same time.

The last call was fine, the US player grabbed the Canadian player's shirt and dragged her down (you could only really see it on one of the replay angles) but the slashing call on the States before was a bit weak...

They can always one-up themselves next Olympics. Score 6 goals in the first period and then give up 7 in the last five minutes to lose.

Canada got really lucky on that renegade puck. I forgot about that. It was an inch away from going into the empty net. The randomness of a single game is gutwrenching.

That's the even up call. Unfortunately Wickenheiser got the breakaway. Like Sarah Kwak said on Twitter she was gassed, I don't think she would have scored.

I just watched it again, and it looks like the American bumped into the Canadian's leg while she was skating. Kind of accidental tripping. They both lost their balance.

It's sad that our Canadian women don't get the respect they deserve. That was intense hockey and they showed great determination and heart and never gave up. Really amazing.

The US women's team really shouldn't have trampled on our flag eight years ago. It's been lights out for Canada since then. Like the curse of the bambino.

Yeah, because US athletes are so above all others that they're just competing against themselves. All they had to do is "show up" and they would've had 30+ medals and all the golds. It's not like any of the other countries are any good and have world-class, champion athletes on their teams.

Get over yourselves Americans.

The renegade puck should never have happened. Idiotic lineman got in the Canadian players way. Almost cost us the gold medal. Amazing game all around though. Canada now 4th in total golds and total medal count.

Canada's top priority sport can barely beat America's 4th or 5th.
The goalpost moving is always fun. It's an amazing job and 'suck it Canada' if you win, and 'it was never important in the first place' if you lose. Never fails.

America did a pretty damn good job, though. Shame it seems like they burnt out with overtime.

Americans were expected to win several medals in speedskating, they didn't win a single one.

You would also expect a team up 2-0 with 4 minutes to go to win easily.

That's not just other athletes doing better in those situations, it's also our athletes failing to perform when it matters most. Call it choking or whatever but they didn't just miss out on what was expected of them, they didn't even come close.

Every country in the top 5 of the medal count has got lots of gold and medal contenders who didn't deliver when they had to. We had tons. Others too. Law of averages.

I love generalizations.

How many of those countries missed out on a single medal in a sport with like 20 races where they were expected to medal in a number of them, or choked away a 2-0 lead with 4 minutes to go? Oh yeah, we choked away a bobsled lead too, that like, never happens.

Face it, no other country is as skilled at the sport of choking as America.

Those were some bad penalty calls against the USA women's hockey team in Overtime. I guess in a way it is just karma balancing out the bad calls against Canada in the Canada-USA soccer game at the last Summer Olympics that kept Canada from winning.

Rematch tomorrow with the men should be great!

That's what American commentators would lead you to believe. The Netherlands is the speed skating powerhouse, not US.

Every country has favorites that choke... and I think it happens more in the Winter Olympics as the conditions provide more opportunity to slip or fall. A Canadian speed skater was expected to win 4 Gold medals. He slipped in 2 races and his brother slipped in the relay so he only ended up with one medal.

Too much random crap can happen on snow and ice.

That doesn't even make any sense.

were you watching the game? the only reason you got a clean shot off at the open net is because the linesman crashed into our defender at the blue line. If that had've went in she would have been the MVP for making the americans win.

The Americans would have been up 3-1 at the time then no? How does that make even a lick of sense?
