Another thing I think that isn't getting a lot of attention is the fact Adelina beat her personal best by 18 points in the free skate. That's quite impressive.

A good judging scandal makes the winter olympics entertaining. Now if we could only have a positive doping test. Only three days left...

Exactly.

I have to admit, whenever the talk arises of Women's Hockey possibly being taken out of the Olympics because of two countries dominating, it kinda ticks me off because we have the Dutch basically sweeping the medals in speed skating, yet no one threatens to take that sport out.

We dominated this ONE time. Maybe you noticed our second highest medal count at the Winter Olympics was 11, half of what we have now. WE DOUBLED OUR RECORD. This is a fluke, Women's Hockey's been dominated by the US and Canada forever. Not that I'm saying it should go, there are lots of sports dominated by certain nations, I'm okay with it.

She actually scored 140 at the Russian championships, so the difference is 9. Not too unrealistic, I don't believe.

Because the dutch thing is a fluke at this point. If they start doing that every time then you might have a point. Canada wins women's hockey damn near every time, and they beat the US to do it.

I say if Canada continues to dominate in women's Olympic hockey, then we need to get women's softball reinstated in the Summer Olympics. 'Tis only fair ;-)

Sounds fair to me! Bring back softball IOC, you deprived me of Jenny Finch!

I think the main problem with the new figure skating scoring is that it rewards merely attempting lots of difficult technical things over actually executing them well. So the average person watches someone falling and fumbling all over the place but they still medal because they attempted a bunch of technically difficult stuff that only experts can notice versus someone who flawlessly pulls off a simple routine and places 10th or worse. It doesn't work how we expect it to work.

I wish it worked like that in all sports. I'd be so good, best in the world even.

with that said...as I stated before but the "subjective defenders" seem to ignore...is if it was based on technical merit....mao should have scored highest in her FS and Especially higher than fucking Yulia's FS.

On technical merit, Mao's base value was highest (66.34 vs Adelina's 61.43) but she was penalized for a jump takeoff error and twice failing to fully rotate a jump. After Grades of Execution were factored It ended up with Adelina 75.54, Mao 73.03.

They need to make the punishments for obvious failures of execution like falling much worse. People shouldn't be stumbling to victories.

The only thing that makes me sad about Adelina's win over Yuna/Carolina is having to constantly hear about it instead of how amazing (imo) Mao's performance was. That was the highlight of the event for me.

She didn't fall though, and she did lose points for the stumble.

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...omens-figure-skating-jumps.html?smid=fb-share

If you mouse over each element you can see that she was getting between +1- 1.8 on the well executed parts but for the stumble she got a -0.9 factor.

Compare that to say Kostner who got -0.1 factor for a minor fault on a triple loop or the -2.1 that both Gold & Lipnitskaia received for their respective falls.

-0.9 doesn't strike me as particularly light penalty for a stumble after a completed section. Did it look a little awkward? Sure. But she didn't land on her ass or put a hand down and she got penalized accordingly on the scoring. A lot other people got penalties for poor execution and if you mouse over you'll find that there's a lot of -0.7 & -0.6s so -0.9 isn't going easy by any stretch.

Do you think the IOC will go after women's hockey again after this result?
I don't think the IOC was ever going after women's hockey. They want it to work. It's outside opinions that have questioned the sport.

After an exciting finish like this, it's not going anywhere. Having Switzerland win bronze and becoming a medal contender helps the validity of the sport too.

I think the scores work against women's hockey as well. As in, Canada beats a team 5-0 or the USA beats a team 5-1, and the casual observer sees that as a blowout, when it's closer to something like Brazil beating Ireland 2-0 in football.

It's taking quite awhile for you to format your computer.

Well, if I was formatting my computer I wouldn't be posting here. as I said earlier, im reinstalling a ton of apps and programs, re-setting them up, pointing different audio projects to where different sound files are.

This ladies figure skating results thing is more fun.

Check out this article too..............Very interesting when it comes to the judges.

The difference is that with football, there are more than enough nations to go around to contend. In men's hockey, there are about 6 teams that have a chance, so it's still somewhat "even". In women's hockey it's basically the two North American teams on their own tier and then the Scandinavians at a lower tier, then everyone else. The problem is that because of collegiate sports, the North American women can continue to play and improve, which is something that doesn't happen in Europe for the women (and probably not at all in Asia in the years that Japan or China fields a women's hockey team).

LOL, i just noticed the one judge who just gave her PCS scores to yuna of
8.50
7.75
8.75
8.25
8.75

when that is Yuna's strongest suit and she never has scored that low in like the past decade according to experts....
Brutal. All of those would be thrown out on the lower end though right?

They cheered and blew horns and chanted "Rus-ay-a" through the final three skaters. They chanted it even louder when a small Korean contingent attempted to chant, "Yu-na-kim."

http://www.latimes.com/sports/olymp...schke-20140221,0,4308145.column#ixzz2tutPSvVH

See, this is the problem. The PROPER chant is not to try and counter an existing chant, which is impossible, but to AMEND the existing chant and use their existing momentum against them.

The korean contingent should have said "sucks" at the end of the chant.

RO SI YA then "sucks"

Amateur chanters. Go to a baseball game.

Sounds like one of the judges had a beef

Also in the Short Program....a Judge gave Yuna a 0 on a perfect jump....LOL cmon!

Justify that....

Yup. It was the short program was where she really got screwed over.

A days worth of events and this thread is filled with people complaining about figure skating judging and how they can't believe so-and-so lost despite being so "graceful" and "emotional".

Figure skating really needs to be out of the Olympics altogether. It's great as performance art. Treat it that way.

Never going to happen. It gets big TV ratings. The IOC will never get rid of figure skating.

Just stop caring and watch something else. There are no words to describe how much I do not want to analyze figure skating scoring numbers.

So I know everyone is going crazy about men's hockey, but I think Mikaela Shiffrin has a good chance to get the US another gold in Slalom. Will be interesting to see if she can hold off Maze

That Jennifer Jones interview is gonna make me cry. After so many years, childbirth, a knee injury, it means so much to her. When you focus on this goal for so long, it's emotional when it comes true.

You can tell how much that child means to her she basically cried every time she is mentioned. Jenn Jones is awesome. <3
