Vaporwave music. I guess I'm glad it got more exposure because of the meme but I feel like my tastes are a joke for liking it.

I seriously doubt that all the people saying "dicks out for Harambe" actually put that much thought into it. My guess is that the majority of the people bringing up Harambe are just trying to be funny. So is it really art if the majority of people don't get the greater meaning?
So much art wouldn't be considered art anymore if the majority of people had to understand the deeper ties the art has.

Donald Trump is likely going to become an even more pervasive meme regardless of the election outcome, and it's really sad what it'll have taken to make that happen either way.

SJW and being triggered, you can't have a mature conversation about social issues without this stupid crap being invoked at some point

To be fair, that was after the word triggered had been robbed of its original meaning by people using it to attach trigger warning labels to minor things. The reason it became a meme was because the word was already ruined.

The worst thing about SJW is that for most, if not all, people who use the term unironically is that having any left-wing social viewpoint, even if it's something most reasonable people agree with is enough for someone to call you a SJW.

Sonic's next 50 games could all be 10/10 GOTY level games, and he still won't escape the memes thrust upon him. Gotta go fast, Coldsteel, Chris-Chan, '06, etc...

It'd be fine if SEGA had more than that to offer the general public, but every other modern offering (That isn't from a merged/owned company like Atlus or Sammy) has either a high barrier of cultural understanding (Yakuza, Miku) or is way too complex for the mass market. (Football Manager, Total War)

Sanic not only ruined Sonic, but it could be argued that SEGA was ruined as well.

Harambe was the worst.

I have no respect for people that think that joke is still funny, i would spit on the ground in front of you, the spit representing the quality of the "Harambe meme" and the ground representing where your sense of humor is.

If you think the joke is about miscarriages, you don't understand loss.

Loss is a mockery of Buckley's shortcomings as a story teller, his ego blinding him from realizing why it was a bad idea and then doubling down on it.

He hamfistedly tried to add unnecessary drama to his shitty two gamers in a couch gag-a-day comic and people have ridiculed him for it for years.

Loss its not a joke about dead babies, it's a monument to Buckley's lack of self awareness.

Even if it's not aimed at the subject of the comic, the fact that it's attacking a relation to the comic is simply too close for me.

Vaporwave isn't a meme. It's a legitimate genre that uses a multitude of styles from jazz, funk, r&b, and electro-pop to satirize modern Western societies' obsession with consumerism and nostalgia.

it is not up to the texts in an on themselves to define whether the meme status is out of limits if kids continue to misinterpret them and reinterpret them. I think the post you are quoting is very much lamenting that fact. Liking it for what it was before the misconception joke took exposure an center stage.

The Harambe meme is basically a criticism of the outrage cycle our 24 hour news creates. Take as a recent example the Rio Olympics. Before the event, the media was flooded with outrage and fearmongering over Zika virus outbreaks, buildings falling apart and violent crime sprees. What actually happened at the Olympics? Some green water and a few robberies. The outrage that Harambe's death created was like so many other outrages where you bitch about it and forget about it the next day. The Harambe meme is basically "what would happen if we kept that level of outrage going?" Its simultaneously a criticism of the news cycle that propagates these surface level outrages as well as mocking those who fall prey to it.

In other words, the Harambe meme is social criticism and one of the few memes that can now be categorically defined as art.

This is pure nonsense.

Brexit. The way that a lot of popular media/news make jokes about Marmite prices going up and everyone pretending to be outraged (Thanks Brexit = Thanks Obama etc.) but really this is just the beginning of something much worse.
Brexit is a good one. People only treat it like a joke now because its effects haven't been felt yet. But the potential consequences are really very serious.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I generally think Sandstorm is a well-produced song and have a lot of memories raving my face off to that back in 2000, so I guess that one.

Advice Dog spinoffs.

It's resulted in literally every single image macro made today to follow the same formula of:

Code:
Line 1 at the top of the image

Image that didn't even need words in the first place

Line 2 at the bottom of the image

Impact font, white text, black stroke and done.

The worst part about this was that some of the formats actually had jokes. It was a setup for the joke at the top, an image to get your mind in a certain frame of reference, and then the punchline at the bottom that subverts the expectations set up by the setup and the image.

Now it's just "thing I wanted to say but no one would pay attention if it wasn't on an image."

To answer the OP's question, though, most memes. Loss.jpg is one of the few funny ones because it requires creativity. Most memes are inherently not humor because they are just repeating things. Surprise is a core part of humor, which you can't have if you're just repeating something everyone has already seen.

It still takes me a moment to realize what these memes reference. I didn't know what "Loss" was until a few months ago on GAF where I had to have it explained, then did some 'Know Your Meme' research. Might have been funnier had I been aware of it from the beginning, but some of these variations of it are amazing.

Speaking of which, that Spongebob one up top is incredible.

Ken Bone.

People, including late night comedians on national TV, felt like they had carte blanche to shame this guy for his fetishes all because we decided we liked his sweater.

Where did this actually happen? I sure heard a lot about Ken Bone. I heard a lot about his history supposedly being digged up. Never actually saw where that happened though.

This is another "Good song becomes a meme". To be fair despite the fact that it was good it was definitely overplayed back in the day.

This is the most pretentious thing I have ever read. No way in heck was that a commentary of any kind.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Memes were ok before most knew about them, they don't need to be in everything for all situations. Better to me when the geeks were using them .

When it's used by politicians it stops being cool.

Never even heard must of those once, gotta go fast is the only one that matters. And 06 as a meme? More of just a historically known bad game. After sonic 4 sega had itself to blame. Sonic mania is looking better than any sonic or 2d mario game since world imo though. So there is that.

This is Cold Steel. Warning: contains homophobic slurs.

06 is definitely memetic, especially with its proliferation via Let's Plays.

Chris-chan is a face of the internet that we all must face eventually, much to our dismay.

The Harambe garbage. I looked at the list of Networks on Titanfall 2 last night and there are no less than 100 "Dicks out for Harambe" networks. Its just so eyeroll worthy.

Harry Potter Spoiler that you almost certainly know already:
"Snape Kills Dumbledore"
.

See, knowing this actually kind of ruins the sixth book. It's an event that the entire story builds up too. Not just that
Dumbledore dies
, but that
Snape
ends up being the one to do it. But basically everyone knows beforehand, because it has become a meme.

Star Wars's
"I am your father"
is another instance of this.

(No, I don't really know why I'm bothering to use spoiler tags either.)
