This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

So another Dragon Quest III question: I just fought the false king in South America and got the mod rod (think it's called Staff of Change ins some earlier versions. I can't figure out to do with it! In the end I gave up and looked up a guide, which told me to take it to Greenland and give it to someone there
The problem is, there's no one there! I'm playing the mobile version, did they change it so that you had to do something else before you could meet that person, or is my game bugged? Or maybe I'm missing something.

So, a bit of backstory for context:

We had a water leak yesterday, fairly major, all over the wiring behind the telly. Lots of wires got wet although - for the most part - it didn't get to the actual devices, they're still dry, at worst were resting on wet carpet.

In a panic I, of course, powered everything down and moved things away from the puddle. Plumber came and went (we now have no heating, but no leak. That'll do for now, at least), and today I've started to set things up again (still well clear of the damp area) so I can actually play some games this weekend.

The oddity - and the reason for this question - came when setting up the Xbox One. I'd plugged everything in - USB HD, Kinect, HDMI - except the power. While poking around the back trying to pick out the power socket, my finger brushed what I think was the SPDIF socket...

I'm pretty sure that gave me an electric shock. I felt the tingle right up to my elbow

I don't think it's a water-related thing - the Xbox One didn't get particularly damp, and it's had overnight to dry off whatever had ended up. And, to reiterate, the system wasn't powered yet, so I'm not sure quite where the voltage came from that gave me a tingle.

Is there anything else it could be?

(I'm particularly bothered by the fact that I'm fairly sure that it was the SPDIF socket, which really shouldn't be volt-y at all. Static? It's a bit more powerful than most static shocks I'd encountered. Earthing against the metal case?)

(It's been quite the eventful weekend. There is good with the bad, fortunately!)

I remember that part. You have to enter that seemingly empty field there. And then you have to search for a lonely house somewhere in the upper right. If you're going a bit in the wrong direction, you're immediately kicked out of the area and have to start over.

Fucking hell. I thought I had already searched all over there. But I tried again after your tip and got it. Knowing it's supposed to be in the upper right helped a lot. With how easy that is to miss, that's some shitty fucking design. Thanks for the help though!

How much better does native 4K look compared to upscaled 4K, as the new PS4 is looking to do for their games?
It depends on the monitor/TV and the answer is partially subjective. A 4K image contains four times as many pixels. Upscaling only makes the image larger, it doesn't add any missing information.

I'm thinking about building a gaming desktop this Summer, and I was wondering which GPU I should get. It looks like the 980 Ti is the best, but it's also like $600+. Will a 970 get me at generally maxed setting (1080p 40+ FPS) for most new games coming out. Will a 980? When would I have to update if I got a 970 or just a 980? Also, I've heard people say they use multiple titans. How is that done? And is two 970s better than one 980 ti?

Should wait for the Pascal GPUs to come out first before deciding (the Pascal GPUs are out this Summer/Fall).

if you don't press any buttons in the menu of shadow of the colossus, a video starts where you follow a bird flying around. what is the name of the song thats played?

I keep seeing the word GOAT when I'm perusing Gaf's gaming forum...I have no idea what it means. What does GOAT mean and does it relate to a specific game or just a general gaming term?

Not completely gaming related, but definitely GAF related.

What the hell do these faces mean? Let's start

;__; Are those fangs? Just looks dumb. I see this one the most.

@<@ Huh?

O__o What the fuck, do you have an unfortunate physical condition where one eye is twice the size of another? I feel for you.

Please NEOGAF. I love you, but let's stop making these creepy ass faces.

In the meantime though, can someone explain to me why people do them and what they mean? I know there's some I'm forgetting.

;__; = Crying or tears I'm pretty sure, not fangs lol.
@<@ = Idk what this is myself, maybe someone did drugs.
O__o = Idk about this one either but I imagine it's used to represent shocked or confused, maybe disbelief or like you said what the fuck.

I believe that O_o is supposed to be this:

Whenever I try to open anything in Wii Mode on my Wii U both my TV and my gamepad go dark and I can't turn off the Wii U unless I just do a hard shut down with the power button. Additionally, the aspect ratio when it's in the Wii U mode is now screwed up. I haven't been able to find anything by Googling, does anyone know what's going on here?

Edit: I forgot, holding down the power button doesn't work, the only way I've gotten it to shut off is by unplugging it.

You can use any one or both screens in Wii mode. If it doesn't work as per manual, send it to Nintendo.

Does the strategy guide for Dark Souls 2 by Future press not apply at all to the Scholar of the first sin version of the game? I heard that most of the game was reworked, so the info would be useless. Thanks for the help.

Are there any good ways for removing black marker drawings from old console plastic? Pretty sure the pen was waterproof.

I did something really dumb as a kid; I wanted a black GameBoy... I'm sure I don't need to tell you guys any more than that :lol

Oh man...

Got any pictures?

Either way, I wish you luck in getting it off.

I know, right? :lol

Try some alcohol-based cleaning stuff.

No pictures right now, but it wasn't as bad as I remembered it (?). Either most of it has evaporated on its own over the years, or I never went through with it entirely. Most of what I can see seem to be really bad doodles with a blue ballpoint pen xD Not sure if that's better or worse than a black marker. Would smething with alcohol work on that? It's mostly in the backside grip crevasses and the game slot.

Does Dark Souls III keep the sticky rag doll effect as tradition since people seem to get a kick out of it? It's funny seeing archaic things stick simply as fan favorites instead of limitations.

Yes it does, although it's not as sticky as it was before. I've played 5 hours and haven't thrown a body off a cliff with my leg yet, for instance.

So yesterday the Game Boy and Super Mario Land (and Tetris) had their 27th anniversary and I had to play them. While doing so the following stupid question came to my mind:

How is the Game Boy able to produce Stereo Sound with only one speaker? And which games do even make use of this feature, aside from Super Mario Land?

Is it true, that you can play some N64 games (like Mario Party 2 or Yoshi's Story) on Wii U using Gamecube controllers? Because NoE is saying as much, but I don't trust their controller support data any more, lol.

My daughter got to the wii u tablet and thought that the charging cable was a stylus and dug a few fairly visible scratches into the screen.

Will putting a screen protector on now help mask the scratches or make them a little less visible? Any protectors anyone recommends?

I am certain that won't work, sorry.
If you're feeling lucky, you could try some touch-screen polish, but I've never done that myself and can't say what good or bad effects that may have.
Best option is to send it to Nintendo.

Can someone explain crushed blacks to me?

Can someone explain crushed blacks to me?
TVs are designed to use a limited range of colors, 16-235. Computer monitors are designed for the full range, 0-255. If you mismatch the output signal from a console to what the TV/monitor is expecting, then you might lose some information. Specifically details in dark areas, as you can see in the example below.

(The above was true a decade ago. I would not be surprised if modern monitors and consoles are able to detect display modes automatically.)

So I purchased final fantasy 4 a good while back on the play store on my note 4. Played for a while, then put it down. Went to play it about a month back and the game said it couldn't verify my license and just closed.

In play store account, no record of me purchasing it. Thought maybe I purchased on wife's or daughters Avira maybe? Only explanation I could think of. But neither of them own it either. I've never had another gmail in my life. No receipt in my Gmail either.

I'm at a loss for this situation.... How did I buy it and lose it?

I want to rebuy XIII (that fps based on a comic series). What's considered the best version of that game? PC? Xbox?
The price is a factor and preferably - but not necessarily - for console.

Thanks in advance!

Friend of mine is playing MGSV on Xbox 360 at the moment. When he was doing mission 20,he got a message about an intruder on his motherbase, but he finished the mission first, before defending.

When he got back, he had most of the late game stuff already developed, had a bugged mission list and so on.

Does anyone know what this is about? Can't find anything on a bug that has these effects. Maybe the intruder had some kind of hack?

Doubt it, that event is always triggered there, it's an npc invader iirc. No idea what could've triggered that, sounds like a bug indeed. Maybe check the official MGSV thread?

My son has a 3DS and two memory cards. Is there a way to put the combined data onto a single card?

If there's two separate accounts on each memory card, then it will be very tricky. There's a method on support.nintendo.com that you can look into, but I don't think I personally can give you a better answer.

Is the 14-day xbox live trial I got with the Xbox One eligible for "games with gold?"
According to microsoft's faq it's not but I seem to have no problem downloading and playing Sunset Overdrive for free. Will it remain available to me when I renew the subscription?
