This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

Getting back to my earlier question about a separate user account on my PS3 for when my nephews visit, is there any way to put a password on my main account? It seems kind of silly to have separate accounts and parental controls if they can just turn the system on and go right into an account with no restrictions.

Can you not combine offers on Amazon? I was gonna pre-order Epic Mickey 2 for the 3DS and Wii, which both have $5.00 off offers with pre-order, but when I get to the checkout page only $5.00 is taken off instead of $10.00

Worst case scenario I'll order them separately, but I was wondering if this was a common thing.

I have been playing my Xbox 360 on my 1080p TV for many years now, and have always set it (the Xbox) to display at 1080p.
My wife just bought me a new slim 360, and during setup, I suddenly wondered if I shouldnt set it at 1080p anymore?
None of the games actually run at 1080p, and dvds certainly dont, so would it actually be better to put it down to 720p?
I know the Xbox upscales everything to 1080p, so that would actually make my picture clarity worse if its not coming from a native 1080p source...is that correct?
Sorry if this makes no sense, or if its so stupid its unbelievable.

If your TV is 1080p (Which I'm assuming it is if you used to have the 360 set to 1080) it's just a matter of whether the 360 up-scales the games or if the TV does it. There ARE games on 360 that are 1080p, and I believe the general line of thinking is the 360's up-scaler is probably better than most TV's anyway.

And in my experience I didn't notice much of a difference switching my 360 back and forth from 720 to 1080. I'm sure someone could make a case for it, but I have a hard time seeing a reason to keep the 360 set to 720p. 2 cents

I was watching my brother play a round of One in the Chamber on MW3. He dies and is forced to spectate. That got me thinking.

Wasn't there a game that had some sort of mini-game when you died online? I could swear it was for original Xbox, but for the life of me I can't remember what it is.

The only reason would be using a high quality scaler on TV or external. Or when some games display worse performances in 1080 rather than 720.

But still, that's only vaid if games on XBox 360 are rendered natively at 720p. If the XBox 360 scale the game to 720p, and then the TV to 1080p, the double rescaling would make the image on TV quite bad.

Does anyone know if there is an easy way to install Diablo III off my disc without an optical drive? I hardly ever use CDs or DVDs and haven't for years, so often if I need to install something from a disc I either: a) share a network drive from another PC with an optical drive, or b) make an ISO and install via Daemon Tools.

This time a) has resulted in deathly slowness and multiple errors before reaching the 10% mark, and b) has resulted in it saying my disc has been ejected over and over again.

So does anyone have any easy tips? Or am I going to have to wait 3 days to download this thing?

Looks like Diablo III works like any other Blizzard game. Log into your battle.net account and then go to the games and codes section. From there you should be able to download the full client installer.

Many Mario Karts in Battle Mode have let eliminated players come back as bomb karts to try to blow up other players.

Later Bomberman titles introduced Revenge Mode - after dying control a turret at the side of the screen, and if you eliminate a player with it you'll replace them.

I updated my computer graphic driver and

Under Graphics hardware used to be: A6-34xx MX series
Now it shows: 0x1002 - 0x9647 PCIE
Is this normal?

This was a big talking point with Unreal (1998) when it was announced, but I'm sure there are older games that at least have extra damage for head shots.

Doom I had headshots.

Edit: Hang on, it was weapon-specific, I suppose. And did only account for horizontal accuracy for obvious reasons.

I was just about to question that until I saw your edit! I'm not sure it did, anyway. What situations are you thinking of where it made a difference?

Although I guess you could argue that it had headshots on cacodemons!

I'm not sure anymore at this point — did it or did it not account for horizontal accuracy?

The cacodemons headshot was a weapon-specific hit. I think it was mostly dependant on distance.

Okay, I looked it up, and it seems that it was a binary hitscan with random deviation in terms of damage applied. Except for the shotty and AoE weapons, which take distance to either player or impact into account.

Does anybody know if and what Konami did for Castlevania's 25th anniversary? Or are we still waiting for the surprise to show up? Because using google only returns websites bringing the news that Konami is woring on "something", mostly dated last summer.

At the very least: Goldeneye came out in 1997. Extra damage for headhots, dropped guns and hand shaking animation if you hit them in the hand, limp away if you shoot them in the leg etc..

I currently own both a DSi and a DS Phat, with the latter being the original purchase in 2004 obviously.

Would I be able to put in a DS cartridge that I have memory on from the Phat onto the DSi without there being any data problems? I think doing this erased my memory on the cartridge for NSMB although I'm not positive if it was that or just something else.

Also what about WiFi games that I played originally on the Phat? Can I not play them on DSi?

What's the "best" Dead Space 2 weapon?

The Plasma Cutter is BY FAR the most utilitarian. You could beat the whole game with just that gun if you were so inclined. Though there is one weapon that will help a great, great deal with the last boss... either the force gun or contact beam, can't remember sorry.

My question:

Did including Roy and Marth in SSBM (and uh,, that other guy in SSBB) kickstart the Fire Emblem series in the US? Granted I was only 14 at the time, but I'd never heard of Fire Emblem before SSBM, and nowadays it seems like it's all over the place here.

Err I think I should just ask this here...

What does :lol mean and how does it differ from lol?

Also ;// ????

Also some other neogaf inside joke....heh

Thanks.

Up until somewhat recently (or apparently the beginning of last year, yeesh) if you typed :lol on GAF it would be replaced by a laughing smiley face
01laugh.gif
. It was removed because it led to too many posts that were just: *quote of person* :lol and generally wasn't very good for discussion.

No idea on the other one.

A long, long, time ago, NeoGAF used to have icons like this
KuGsj.gif
for "lol." Then a certain someone abused the smiles so much, they were edited out of the site. So instead of using the smiles, people will, out of habit, use ":lol" in its place.

I really want to get into Yakuza. My friend was telling me how great the Yakuza 5 screens looked and how hyped he is for the game, and it reminded me of how I've wanted to get into the series for a while now but just haven't made the time.

My question is, can I pick it up with Yakuza 3? I think I remember hearing that it has a "previously on Yakuza" thing to get you caught up. Thinking about grabbing that and Yakuza 4.

All of the Yakuza games have recaps. I suggest you start with the first game since they're all worth playing. If you don't want to devote that much time you can start with either 3 or 4.

Thanks for answering mine, now I'll answer yours.

Ha, the other guy is Ike, by the way.

On your question. I'm not sure their appearances there should be given all the credit, but I believe should be given a large amount. Information from trophies to play style all indirectly gave North Americans a taste of the Fire Emblem series.

The popularity of the characters from Melee definitely didn't hurt the idea of bringing a game over to North America. Starting with Fire Emblem for GBA in 2003, which had already been long started in Japan. It nudged itself into the North American market by starting with handhelds and moving onto consoles.

This process went on for a few years straight due to decent to good sales. So, you can say Fire Emblem seems to be everywhere because it eased its way into your gaming news and life due to cautious marketing and exposure from Nintendo.

Ok so I bought a USED copy of Uncharted 3 for 30 bucks from some guy off Kijiji, I figured it's cheaper than Amazon.ca (New $28 +4.99 shipping and handling).

I did not realize this is another game that requires an online pass to play (online) mutiplayer.

I have to spend another $10 just to get online! bummer! Does anyone know how else I may be able to obtain an online pass for Uncharted 3 without paying the full $10? Thanks in advance.

How can there be so many different games that have "GOTY" editions? Isn't there only one GOTY? What decides if my game can have a GOTY edition?

Xbox people!

I want to check my NAT settings. I haven't done it in half a year or so (probably before the last major Dashboard update) and now I can't find the open/strict info through 'Test Xbox LIVE Connection' -- the interface has changed. I think there used to be yellow exclamation marks and a 'more info' option if NAT was anything but Open; nothing there now. This might mean that my NAT *is* open, and MS don't think I need written confirmation of that, or it might mean that I'm missing something.

A google search on how to check Xbox NAT settings in the spaceyear 2012, limited to 'past month only', proved fruitless and only compounded my irritation. Hence my asking here.

Can I trust imgur images to not change? Wondering if I ought to rehost the various submissions for my E3 bingo card generator or if pointing directly at the imgur urls would be sufficient without SURPRISE GOATSE!

...and if someone were to tick *that* box off during E3, I'd be amazed. Except possibly from Konami's conference.

I just started Castlevania: Lords of Shadow again. Just wondering if the game only saves between levels, or does it save at checkpoints during levels too, so that I can quite the game, say, mid-level, and when I start the game again I start at the last checkpoint?

as long as it gets 1 view every six months, it'll stay.

The game saves at every checkpoint IIRC.

Does Red Dead Redemption Game of the Year Edition for PS3 have all the multiplayer/Undead Nightmare content on the disc, or does it have download vouchers for them?

EDIT:
I found that it is all included on the disc.

Again, I don't mean to sound like a cheapskate or a beggar, but is there a cheaper way to get an online pass for Uncharted 3 than to pay the $10 on PSN? Thanks.

I don't know how the codes are distributed for PS3 games, but if it's like the 360, you can find some people selling the codes online for less than the $10 they charge on XBL.

It might have been sold already, but here's one I just found on Cheapassgamer.

Anyone have a copy of Out of The Game Podcast Episode 1. I really want to listen to it again but can't find a working link anywhere.
