This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

When playing my original xbox via component cables on hdtv, every once in a while the screen will go black and the sound cuts out. This only lasts for probably 1 second and then comes right back on, but the action is still going on in-game.

I've tried 2 different sets of component cables, both are cheapos though. Any advice on how to fix?

In my limited experience, this often happens with cheapo cables :(

Is Mass Effect worth playing through? I just got into space, so Im fairly early, but Im finding the combat to be tedious at best. Im loving the story...but..yeah. Is there enough pay off with the story to suffer through a combat system I really dont like?

Forgive my ignorance but are there RPGs in a post apocalypse world other than Fallout? I could really go for a game like that. I suppose I could just replay Fallout 3 or New Vegas.

Wasteland would be the canonical answer, given it's what inspired Fallout in the first place. That said, it's significantly older with the graphical trappings to match. If you're okay with Fallout 1 or 2, though, Wasteland 2 when it appears could well be up your street.

Thanks mclem but I was thinking more recent.

One more stupid question - I have only played Assassins Creed 1 so far. What other AC should I play before getting AC3? Just 2 or is Brotherhood and Revelations important to the story?

There was a thread on a similar note

I think they are all good myself, I'd play them all. They are on sale on steam regularly and on EU PSN right now. Start with 2, if you like it play Brotherhood, if you like that play Revelations.

They are a trilogy and all valid, they all set up the story so far at the start so if you did miss say Brotherhood, you wouldn't be lost.

They are a big improvement over AC1. Play them all IMO.

EDIT: If you are a PC gamer then Steam has them 50-75% off

Wasteland 2's so recent it doesn't actually exist yet!

Depends how complete a story you want, really. AC2 is certainly important; I'm assuming that a lot of the impetus for AC3 will be from plot points raised in AC2.

I can't think of anything particularly important *revealed* in Brotherhood, but there are some events in it which would surprise you if you jumped directly from AC2 to AC3 without having witnessed them. Also, I would argue that Brotherhood is perhaps the best actual *game* of them all.

Revelations is something of a wildcard. I *think* the story in it is mostly skippable - it offers some explanation for events from the end of Brotherhood, but that explanation may not be all that necessary - and it offers a fair amount of backstory, but what's not clear is whether all that backstory will be plot-critical in the future or if it has just served to set more of the scene.

Is there a list of all the DS games that let you download new stuff (puzzles, quests, etc.) via WiFi (and only those)?

I don't know of such a list but if you haven't played Picross 3D, I highly recommend it. There are a bunch of free puzzles that you can download for it.

so I cancelled my XBox Live about a year ago.

just this past week I started receiving XBL emails. At the bottom it says "You are receiving this member service update as part of your Xbox LIVE membership."

well no... I'm not a member.

Am I to just assume that MS decided to be shady and start sending Live emails to past subscribers due to Windows 8/Surface this week? Or do I have to start looking over my bank statements and make sure I wasn't automatically signed back up recently or something??

Well when something like that happens, you should always check your bank account if you have reason to be concerned. More than likely it's just a technical oversight.

So, guys, I bought an Asian PS3.

Is there a way to swap the O and X buttons? I'm just too used to the American way, haha.

So I have a lot of PS2 GAMES unfinished , great games that I plan to finish someday but it will take me years to do that.

I own since launch a 60 gb FAT PS3 , the big boss that can play PS2, PS1 games (a survivor). I know soon or later it will die so my concern is how I will play those PS2 games... : (

Do you think there is a chance PS4 will be PS2 retrocompatible? or should I look for and used PS2 ? is there a way I can play my PS2 games on a PC?

I am tlaking about 35-40 PS2 games an since I finish 6-8 games per year (including PS3 games) I need a long term solution....

Gaming side GAF, I need your help. Every year I beat around 14 games on average. This year that number has drastically dropped to 4. I'm just not feeling it right now. So my question is what game or games (for 360/PS3/PC) can maybe motivate me to play and rekindle my love of games. I actually have a bunch of stuff sitting on my shelf unopened right now so there could be a chance that something you name, I have.

For reference, the games I beat this year are Mass Effect 3, Max Payne 3, Uncharted 3, and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

Return to the basics. If you are older enought to remember the times when there wasn´t guides, walktroughts, reviews , etc. just remember the expectations getting a game generated.

Play a game and generate your own opinion/experience. These day one gets a game influenced by media and forums, that is the reason you do not have so much incentive to play it once you get it.

Would someone who has played Xenoblade Chronicles be kind enough to tell me what this game is like for persistence of on-screen graphics like the H.U.D. please?

i has a new plasma tv which I am being very careful with in an attempt to avoid any burn-in. However, if the game allows me to configure the H.U.D. and other on screen elements so I can safely play it on my plasma that would be far preferable to playing it on my old CRT screen which now looks tiny compared to the 42" plasma goodness!

Thanks in advance :).

Modern plasma TVs aren't sensitive to burn-in. I've played a lot games with static HUD elements and the image retention will disappear when you watch something else.

I have a question about the order I should play the rest of the MGS series. I have the HD collection on 360 as well as 4, so I was wondering, since Peace Walker originally came out on the PSP should I play it before 4 to end my playthroughs on a high note, (I've beaten 1 & 2 already) or just play 3, 4, then back to the HD collection for PW?

Like will playing PW before 4 ruin anything in terms of story, or is it just a matter of changing controls again (as I've been told)?

PW isn't directly tied to 4 (if anything it'll be more like a midquel between 3 and Ground Zeroes), so it shouldn't matter if you play PW before 4.

Simple question. I got a PS1 recently. I have THPS2, Crash 2/3, Spyro, Driver 6, Tekken 2/3*, code to arms(?). Anyways, my question is what games should I get? Genre doesn't matter. As far as the * goes I have 2 copies of Tekken 3. Both of which are pretty scratched up. One only loads to the Namco logo and the other only loads to the menu. Once you select a character in the mode your playing it freezes. Is there anything I can do about this?

You can also play them on a PS2/PS3 and in some cases on a PSP/PSV, but my favorite PS1 games are:
• Alundra
• Dragon Quest VII
• Final Fantasy VII
• Final Fantasy VIII
• Final Fantasy IX
• Final Fantasy Tactics
• Grandia
• Koudelka
• Metal Gear Solid
• Parasite Eve
• Parasite Eve II
• Suikoden
• Suikoden II
• Vagrant Story
• Valkyrie Profile

The PSP ports of Valkyrie Profile and Final Fantasy: Tactics are both great. Many genres, like fighting, racing and sports, don't hold up well and I'd rather play something more recent instead. There are also a few surprisingly good PC ports e.g. X-Com: Enemy Unknown.

Thank you for the reply archnemesis but it is burn in that concerns me, not image retention. As I understand it they are not quite the same phenomena. Besides, I am unsure how modern this particular model is. So I would rather err on the side of being overly cautious. However, since posting this I remembered that there would be a thread for the game in the Community sub forum so I shall ask in there.

They're both caused by static content. The difference is that burn in is permanent where as image retention isn't. I understand that you don't want to risk it with a new TV. I hope you get a better answer in the community thread. For reference's sake, my Panasonic plasma TV is from Feb 2009.

Yes, thank you archnemesis, that is how I understand it too. I am probably being overly paranoid but I would far rather be that than complacent and then be stuck with burn in as that would really get on my tits and not in a good way!

The community thread came up trumps thanks :) and it turns out the game is HUD heavy so I am going to leave it until I get more hours on the plasma's 'clock'. I am trying to finish my outstanding Wii games so I don't get used to the Wii U and then baulk at playing the Wii because of teh graffix!!!1!!! :) I'm playing Red Steel 2 right now on my CRT and loving both the game and the visuals but then frame rate and art design is much more important to me than the technical proficiency of the graphics.

So um thanks :).

So the storm here in NY is cutting off the power every few hours or so but it comes back on. I was thinking of playing 360, but anyone know if it is likely my whole HDD gets corrupted from the power going off while playing?

Same thing is happening to me. I'm trying to play Skyrim and it keeps blink off and on every now and then.

Is running Fallout 3 on a laptop with an onboard graphics card feasible? Or an integrated graphics card, whatever.

It has 4GB of RAM and a core i3 @ 2.4 GHz, but for graphics Samsung just lists an "Intel® GMA HD Chipset" with 1698 MB memory.

Here's a head scratcher...

I just bought a Gameboy Color which has a casing like this one:
fMVxa.jpg
And the screen border like this one:
So it's "Atomic Purple" but has Pokemon on the border of the screen. I'm going to try and get some information off the seller, but I can't find any evidence of this on the interwebs.

Does anyone know anything about it? I'll try take some pictures when it actually arrives.

I think I saw one on eBay once but I can't find the listing again, it was maybe a year ago.

They changed the screen cover, the original probably fell off or got damaged and they replaced it with the Pokemon one, it's fairly easy to do.

Was it ever revealed who made that fancy Majora's Mask HD trailer?

I just watched it again and it looks very professional. Whoever did it has a lot of talent.

If I were to remove the HD from my PS3 and place it in a different PS3, would the latter PS3 effectively be identical to my own (with my downloaded titles functioning and my accounts being present)?

No, your HDD is tied to the physical unit. You need to use the transfer tool. I guess it's a necessary evil to prevent piracy.
