This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

How can people who distribute roms openly and freely, especially for current gen systems like the DS, get away with what they are doing? It just seems like outright distribution of stolen property that would get shutdown in a heartbeat by packs of rabid lawyers.

Aha, thanks, easy to research these things now. I rented games at tons of places and never saw any of these. Figured they'd be something more obscure.

I was always amused by all the announcements that these are indeed INSTRUCTIONS INSTRUCTIONS INSTRUCTIONS

My brother is getting rid of our 360 and I was wondering if there was some type of way to back up XBLA games on an external drive or something. I'd hate all that money spent on XBLA games to go to waste if I get a 360 again. Also, are the games tied to accounts? If I recovered my account on a new Xbox, could I download my old games? Thanks.

Can't backup the games, but you can redownload them on a new xbox via gamertag recovery.

IIRC you'll need to be connected online for them to work though as it's no longer on the original xbox.

When you first purchase anything from the Xbox Marketplace, the conent is digitally signed to your gamertag and your xbox. This means that as long as you have one of those still available (in this case, your gamertag), you will be able to use your content.

However, to be on the safe side, you can transfer your licenses to the new xbox: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Support/LicenseMigration/Home

If I've played a PS1 disc on my PS3 and have a virtual save file, and then I buy the PSN version of the game, is there any way that I can take my PS1 disc save file and apply it to the PSN version? I'd eventually like to take that save data and put it on my PSP as well.

It automatically works, I don't think you have to do anything.

I have a question. In the Folklore demo you couldn't invert the camera controls, I'm not playing a game that way, does anyone know if you can in the final game?

Yes, you can invert the camera both vertically and horizontally, independently of each other.

If I sign up for playstation plus can I use my US credit card on the US store even if I live in Japan? Currently I can't add funds, but maybe with playstation plus I can? Is there a better way to get PSN credit in Japan other than playasia?

Yeah, downloaded PS1 games use your virtual memory cards, just like your physical PS1 discs. And you can also transfer save files to and from a PSP. It's pretty nifty.

There's an incomplete English patch for it. You'll need ISO images of both the Japanese Zodiac Job System version and the regular US version in order to patch it. I haven't tried it myself yet, but I assume you need a modded console or a PS2 emulator (for the PC) to play it.

Known issues (US version):

  • Additional japanese overlays in intro.
  • Some items have wrong or missing descriptions.
  • Rafflesia's genre in bestiary is too long (as well as few others).
  • One or two bestiary entries (cluckatrice/chickatrice?) are too long, so one character is moved to the next line and is the only one in this line.
  • Some minor texts in inventory/shops are in japanese (quantity, count, price, name).
  • Some descriptions on license board are too long.
  • Some item names are too long - shops/inventory list/license board. There's just a few of them.
  • Some gambit names are too long.
  • The "Action list" is totally screwed due to too long names.
  • Some missing npc names (shop clerks in bhujerba).
  • Wrong names in Pharos, when you look at the map for the first time.
  • "(Jahara, land of Garif)" goes offscreen in hunt descriptions.

I don't think it's against the forum rules, but just in case I'll send you a PM with a link to the download. If you need any other help with the game I suggest you take a look at the FAQ that Red Scarlet put up last week.

I have played through with the patch and it's very playable with the english but the above issues are there. The biggest problem I had, which wasn't much of a problem really was the wrong name for items. Specifically the elemental motes. 100% playable though, all the way through trial mode.

In my first days of playing EVE online, what is going to net me the most money: Veldspar mining (my cargo hold can hold about 3000 of it) or looking for escort mission from agents that I can complete without paying too much attention to the game? I need about a million and a half ISK to get the ship I'm aiming for to start my exploration career.

Why is not yet standard for console games to always allow the ability to configure every button, much like a PC game? Why can't we move past having only 3 preset configurations, which never seem to have the changes you want in a game.

How hard is it to implement the ability to configure all buttons in console games?

Anyone know a good mail-in PS3 repair service in the UK? BD drive's borked and I do *not* want to replace it myself :(

If you're still looking try these guys out. But they're prices are a bit steep. Still cheaper than sony though I think.

I sent my Fat PS3 when it had the YLOD and they fixed it. It died again a month later which they fixed again because it was under their warrenty, it then broke again and they gave me a refund as the PS3 was too far gone. You should be fine with your problem though.

That's awesome, thanks for the reply. I wonder why it wasn't in the demo.

I have another question. Is the next Tomb Raider confirmed for this year? Everyone on GAF seems to think it is, but I can't find anything official on that.

Mining if i dont remember wrong. I used to make missions a lot but they are repeative as mining and takes more time to complete a mission(as they advance they send you far places and consumes more time)

It's planned for release in the last quarter of 2011 according to Game Informer's January issue.

I recently saw one of those online petitions (can't link to it on NeoGAF) started by a disabled gamer. Because he is partially paralyzed, he has trouble using the controller (but still manages to play games like CoD), so he started a petition to ask developers to build this functionality into their games. Then he took the petition to one of the big gaming conventions to talk to the developers directly. No idea how they reacted.

But I'm getting sidetracked... apparently the reasons he's been given as to why developers don't allow button mapping is because it takes a lot of time and "most" (don't know what that means) developers don't have somebody that is knowledgeable enough to do this.

Excellent, thanks again.

EDIT: Another question.

Just ordered Folklore, which character should I play first?

I'm going to buy a ps3 in a few days and my plan is to play it on my computer monitor. But apparently your monitor has to be HDCP ready for the ps3 video output to work, right? How do you tell if a monitor supports HDCP?

This is the monitor in question.

both

Chapter 1 Ellen then Chapter 1 with Keats them , then Chapter 2 with Ellen and then chapter 2 with Keats and so on for the rest of the chapters..

It's best method to keep on with the story and enjoy the game. trust me, it's recommended by the many of the game fans ( all four of us :P ) .

And because you need to keep the events going with both , and also if you played with only one character, you can't finish the game, at some later point of the game it require that you play the other one to a certain chapter before we go to the final chapters, you might feel not liking to play the old chapters again, so by playing Ellen then Keats in the same chapter together back to back you do it the best way.

Is there any other way to finish Fallout Vegas without aligning myself to one particular faction/group? I don't want to help the damned robots, the NCR, or the Legion.

StuBurns said:

It doesn't matter, as long as you don't do what I did. You have to complete all the previous chapters with both characters before you can start the final one. When I played it, I switched back and forth between Keats and Ellen. This meant I had to replay the same chapter again as soon as I completed it, which soon became a chore.

It's a bit weird that neither the manual or their homepage mention HDCP. On the other hand both Amazon and Scan.co.uk say the monitor supports it.

Er. I've coded button remapping for a (minor, but popular in its niche) console title, and I'm an idiot.

There are considerations to take into account; the game in question had a lot of overloaded controls (buttons that do action A in most situations, B in some, and C if you're holding down a 'shift' button) which we just couldn't separate out from one another; you couldn't split A, B and C, but you could remap that multiple effect to a different key.

I might be misremembering - it's been some time - but I also seem to recall a stipulation from the console manufacturer that - paraphrased - boiled down to "the game designer must prevent the player from making the game unplayable"; that required some level of second-guessing. My theory was that that was intended for store demos to stop one bad apple from screwing up the demo for everyone else. Suffice to say, such prevention does require us to be somewhat restrictive.

All that said, it's certainly possible, and it's not even particularly difficult - but it does require extensive planning at the earliest stages, trying to bolt that feature on late in development is going to cause a world of hurt. And generally at the earliest stages developers are more interested in getting something to *run* so publishers give them some money.

I am a superior gaffer than him and I draw yaoi Keats fanarts at dA, so I am right,

But on a serious note, here is why my method is recommended,

-Playing with both is the way to go, since everything with both characters Story wise happens in the same time( game time).

- You need to be in the same chapter with both at the same time or you may miss or forget some important stuff, remember it's murder/mystery theme story, so you want to do this.

-Some secret/questions/plot that affect both will happens in Keats or Ellen same chapter so don't spoil the story for yourself by playing just one character.

-If you play with only one character to chapter 7 then the game will force you to play the other from the start to the same chapter before allowing you to progress, this will look like you start the game again, better keep your both character together, so it's Same chapter ( each chapter is less than 1 hour anyway) back to back and keep yourself up to date VS replay the old levels later when you just want to see what will happen in the final chapter.

These both seem like better reasons than what I was repeating from that guy who created the petition. Thanks for the info. (Of course, this doesn't stop me from wanting more developers to implement button remapping.)

So I found one of my GameCube memory cards, but it's the 1019. I've heard there are issues with the 1019. Some people have said it was related to WiiConnect or whatever. Is there anything I can do so I don't end up with a corrupted card?

Quick technical question regarding Game Save data on the PS3.

I recently backed up my PS3 FAT's data to transfer it to my new Slim's HDD, but before I wanted to back it up, figuring that It will save me a little time if I get rid of unnecessary files, I accidentally deleted my Call of Duty: World at War game save data.

here's the thing, I was almost done that game, I think I was actually on the last level.

Since I already have a huge gaming backlog, I have no desire to replay this entire game from the beginning.

long story short, is it possible to obtain a Game save data for CoD: World at War for the PS3 from online or from someone here on GAF?

Does this even work? (maybe feeding it to the PS3 through USB flash drive) or I have no idea what I'm talking about!?!

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Infinite Space DS
I just got back into it again and am pretty much lost.

The most recent cut scene/event that I came across is that Ursula talking about marriage to her father then a tea/ensign discussion with her aide. Then another dialog with 3 dudes about another super weapon just like the ZR. Since there's no mission/quest log/objectives... I've forgotten on what I'm supposed to do next.

Recently, one of my PS3 controller's d-pad stopped working. It all started when the up arrow stopped working, then it became all the entire d-pad. Anyone know the cause of this problem?

The little rubber sensor pads underneath are probably shot or fell out of alignment. If you're feeling brave you could crack it open and see if they're still making contact when pressed. Probably though you'll have to look at a new controller.

No one eh? just a simple question can I share or obtain PS3 game saves online? is it something frowned upon or illegal? I want a Call of Duty: World at War game save to be specific.

Anyway here's another one, I would greatly appreciate, what is the best Indi Mario game I can (download) play online?

So I just bought a PSP Go and PS3. My PS3 can connect to the Wi-Fi no problem, but not my PSP Go. When I had a 3000 it could connect just fine, but we did change routers and I haven't had a 3000 since then.

I wanted to connect and buy God Eater Burst. Is there any way I can do that through the PS3? I know I can download it and then transfer the game over to the PSP, but I want to be able to get updates and whatnot as well.

Superior in every way. I held onto my Gamecube disc for a year or so but I ended up just throwing it up on Goozex to dump it.
