This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

Are you maybe using it with an HDTV (LCD/Plasma)? Because most of those lightguns will only work with CRT tube televsions.

EDIT: GunCon 2 is only compatible with CRT televisions, GunCon 3 is compatible with LCD/Plasma.

Nope, I'm using an old CRT and still can't get the thing to work correctly.

I need help loading Metro 2033 from steam. "The program can't start because PhysXLoader.dll is missing from your computer" says the system error message when I try launching. Where do I go from here?

Hey,
Can I link my PS3 via HDMI to my monitor via VGA (using a converter of course), or is it not supported?

Aye, that works.

You just need to install physx. As you got it on Steam, an installer should be included in Steam\steamapps\common\metro 2033\install as physx.exe. If it uninstalls physx, that's okay. Just click on the .exe a second time for it to install properly.

If for some reason that doesn't work, you can got to the website for NVIDIA or whatever card you have and get the software from them.

I'm sure I already know the answer for my next question, but I don't care, the game's worth it:

Is eBay the only way of getting Earthbound that doesn't involve having luck? $140 is just too much. :(

Right, this one here's for those brave folks who've replaced their PS3 hard drives:

Do we know what model screwdriver you need to use to avoid stripping the screws? Or should I be looking for some kind of tweezers instead? Cheers!

This one is mainly for the PC (master race) users, but what is the normal refresh rate on most PC displays these days? Back when I was still fiddling with configs etc. regularly, I usually aimed to sync the FPS cap with the refresh rate unless there was any special engine related tweaks/problems towards it (like the magic numbers in Q3 engine) and usually the refresh rate was 75hz or over for me depending on the screen.

Are most displays now 60hz or does aiming for 60fps for PC games make as little as it did before. Doesn't it cause screen tearing and other issues or was it just with CRT's? Do the drivers now do that work automatically?

In games like Resident Evil and Final Fantasy from the PS1 era, were the prerendered backgrounds made from fully 3D environments they built and took screenshots from? If so why has no one ever reworked those original assets into real-time for modern versions of those games?

I'd think that rebuilding the whole scene would be a lot easier than using the original assests (if the even exist anymore)

When websites/magazines that only cover PlayStation get an early copy of a multi-platform game to review, are they ever forced to review the 360 version? I ask because sometimes during promotion periods we won't ever see the PS3 version shown in public until it's actually on store shelves.

Inspired by the GoG release of the early Ultimas: What was the logic behind the two CGA colour palettes? White, Magenta, Cyan and Black or Red, Green, Orange and Black? They always struck me as a remarkably ugly set of choices, I'm assuming there's a hardware reason those particular ones were the ones available.

They often are a press group, working within the same office and their counterparts from the other system so they shares the hardware.

How fast is the SD card that comes bundled with the 3DS? (Or, alternatively, is there a way I can find out how fast an SD card is using a PC?)

So, legal question.

When I download or am gifted (or am granted) a digital version of a game without usage restrictions, do I legally own the game? Am I entitled to legally make a backup copy for my own purposes?

Practical example:

I'm a 3DS Ambassador. Do I now own those 10 NES games legally?

Could I now legally use the ROMs of those 10 games on say, my CFW PSP Go?

I imagine you are licensed to use those games on a 3DS system and nothing else. Read the licensing agreement that is probably buried somewhere in the games or the 3DS store.

I almost bumped the old ass Machinarium thread but figured I'd ask here instead.

Is there a way to keep your inventory open at all times? I'm pretty early in and I'm already annoyed by how sluggish and unresponsive the inventory menu seems to be. It would solve everything if I could just leave it open always.

I don't really know the answer and I don't know anything about 3DS Ambassador, but I imagine you own what they give you, in the format in which they give it to you. You can use the ROMs if that's what they had you download.

Is Phantasy Star Portable 2 worth it if I'll never play online? I put a good amount of hours into Monster Hunter on PSP by myself and had a good time, looking for something similar with lots of depth, and I think PSP2 may be what I'm looking for, but I'm not sure if there are parts early on when I'll be absolutely frustrated because I'm alone.

I know there has been a topic for this but search seems to be down for me. I've heard that Wii A/V cables will work on the gamecube. Even the guy at gamestop(I know..lol) said they do. But then why does my Wii cables not fit? Is this not the case for older Gamecube models?

I have a Japanese classic controller for the wii and I'm wondering if it works on a UK console?

Also are wii points region free?

I'm starting to make plans for Christmas, which should be big this year. We're going to have quite a collection of people:

Me (31)
My Parents (60+)
One or two of my sisters, and their husbands (40+)
Two or three nieces (<5)

I'm starting to plan the gaming side of things for that. I've generally brought some quite good party games (Guitar Hero, Buzz and Singstar have been hugely popular), but I'm thinking the appeal of those is a little old-skewing for the nieces.

This year I'm likely to be taking my PS2 and Wii. 360 and PS3 are a bit heavy (It's a plane journey away). I'm wondering what games I should add to my collection which would go down well. Just Dance should be a given (maybe with the sequel), does anyone have any other recommendations for family-friendly gaming that I may not have thought of? I have all the Wii * titles other than Music and Play (Motion), although I may bite on the latter for another MotionPlus for some four-player rowing in Wii Sports Resort.

Does anyone have any opinions on the various Buzz party games? And are any of the trivia games for Wii as good as the 'main' Buzz titles?

(I also probably need to set up child lock on my USB loader so they don't ask awkward questions about House Of The Dead: Overkill or Madworld...)

Edit: Oh, supplementary question: How old do you need to be to enjoy Fortune (That is, Itadaki) Street? I'll probably be looking to import that, but not sure if it's within the girls' age range.

Yes it'll work (why does this get asked so much, I'm struggling to think when a controller was ever region lcoked)

Wii points are region specific. eShop wallet money goes a step further being country specific

They got it wrong but its a pretty simple mistake to make as the shape is very similar and on Nintendo systems, SNES, N64 and Gamecube can use the same composite and S-video leads (though for PAL users the S-video lead only works on the N64...yes RGB scart works for SNES and gamecube but for one of them when being used on the other system a capacitor inside the lead needs to be broken to avoid a very dark image).

The Wii can output in digital is the cause for this change (older were analogue only...the component lead had some sort of converter inside, not sure why it needed a different port) I think.

I'm looking to play an rpg... something I can buy on PSN... but my only criteria is that (aside from being a good game) it must play quickly. The battles themselves can be long and involved, even slow moving, but actually getting into battle must be fast.

I'm playing through FFIX atm and it's killing me how fucking long it takes to load the battle screen. I cannot take it. There's no way I'll ever finish this game again. It's just too slow.

I have Vagrant Story already, so that one is off the radar.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

You can action RPGs like Alundra, Legend of Mana, and Threads of Fate or you could try Parasite Eve.

I will buy a couple of these. I barely remember Parasite Eve... other than thinking it was awesome at the time.

Can you think of any traditional turn-based jrpg's that don't take forever to load battles?

Happened up a Video Game Video on Gametrailers about Diddy Kong Racing, and now I have the urge to track down the DS remake. Is it any good and worth a $40 price or should I just wait for Mario Kart 7?

Google Product Search says that my local Toys R Us and Sears has it but I highly doubt that, as it came out four years ago.

Don't buy it, it's a terrible port.

A bit late with the answer, but since no one else answered, I figured that I would.

I actually replaced my hard drive a couple of months ago with no problems. You need a #1 Phillips screwdriver. The screws are in there pretty tight, so it's best to brace the system and give the screws a nice, firm quarter turn to "snap" them loose. Once you get that initial turn, they should come out easily.

If you don't give them that solid turn at the beginning to loosen 'em, you risk stripping the screws. Just get that screwdriver in there firmly and keep the pressure on it as you do that first turn.

All said, I got the system open, the drive replaced, and everything hooked back up in about five minutes.

Is there a way I can force games to use my Razer Naga's sensitivity profile? Having to spend a handful of hours getting used to each game's sensitivity settings so I can play to my full capabilities really sucks, not to mention switching games takes a bit to adjust, too.

That's what I thought. Is the XL one at least decent?
It's fantastic. I would argue better than a Phat. The DSiXL is the optimum DS model for lots of reasons. Get one.

Question: Are there any missable items in the Rune Factory games for DS? I know there were some obscure unlockables in the previous Harvest Moon games, and was curious if I would be able to work out everything without the need for a guide in Rune Factory 3.

There is a word that Japanese game designers use to describe games that successfully create a strong connection to the control interface and I'm trying to remember what it was. It's what a lot of western designers would probably call "visceral".

So I wanted to take some time out to go back and play through the Ultima series, and maybe daggerfall. I need to know though from anyone experianced with it, what is the best dos emulator thats available?

I'm currently trying to use dosbox but for some reason I just can't seem to get the games up and running, if anyone has a chance and can help me with this it would be much appreciated.

If you get Daggerfall straight from Bethesda's site, it comes with a good DOSbox tutorial and walks you through step by step getting the game running.

You can download Ultima IV, pre-configured in DOSBox, for free from GoG. The first three games are $5.99. It might be worth a few dollars to not having to configure it yourself.

So if I wanted to preorder Saint Seiya Sanctuary Battle from Europe, as a NA resident, who would I go with?
Does it have a release date yet? It's probably too soon to pre-order it, but here is a short list of stores who ship internationally from the UK. There might be better alternatives out there.

ASDA - International shipping.
dvd.co.uk - International shipping.
CD WOW - International shipping.
thehut.com - International shipping.
hmv.com - International shipping.
Game UK - International shipping.
Amazon.co.uk - International shipping to countries without their own Amazon site i.e. Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States.

Question!

What ever became of the "rumble within controllers" patent lawsuit a few years back? I am still without a PS3 controller that rumbles, (although I know they sell them) and I know the 360 controller rumbles far less than games int he PS2 era did. No rumble within Wii nunchucks or classic controllers either.

No, the PS3 doesn't support saving multiple wireless network settings. You can do it on the PSP, so it would probably be easy for them to add if they thought it was something people wanted.
