They shouldn't be using explosion. An object at that speed hitting our atmosphere causes immense, sudden friction that makes it fracture and break apart.
I know. But look at wikipedia's account of Tunguska. Nothing about a direct hit. The eyewitnesses talk about a fireball, an explosion, a wind storm, and a whole lot of fear.

I saw something about this on the history channel once, they said they don't know
There could have been some substance contained within the asteroid that reacted with the air when it was exposed

I just got a HTC Wildfire. I won't be charged for using the Wi-Fi aspect right? I would only be charged if I used the internet straight from the phone. That sound about right? (Student trying to minimize expenses here :lol )

Correct, using a wireless network connected to the internet won't incur charges.

He made other threads like this? I'd love to read them. :lol

His name was NintendosBooger and he made quite a few legendary threads. I still don't believe he was a joke poster. :)

edit: you fucking bastard parrotbeak

LOL, well you found the foreign women one, which I missed. I thought the comics threads were pretty normal so left those out. Thought he had more threads about clothes and professionalism but maybe he just contributed to other threads about those topics.

I have a carpet and a plastic mat for my desk chair to role around on. The mat is breaking apart and has cracks everywhere (basically falling apart) after only a few months. What is a (cheap) brand that wont do this?

I want to be able to send Tweets using normal email by my phone or check the tweets of my friends. Can any one help me a little bit since I'm not completely sure If I'm able to do it as I do it in Facebook and my email?

If you can't access it normally, use Freegate.

I'm not sure you can do it from your phone, and I am also not sure if Twitter is banned. I don't use it, so I don't know. Sorry.

I really need a phone number of a friend's parents. I have their address and all but did an infinite amount of searching and can't find it, is there anyway to get it...Its a home phone.

Why does Windows say my 32GB iPod has a total of 43.9 GB of space? Does iOS take up that much, or is Apple imiting usable space like Microsoft did with the late life Xbox systems.

Unfortunately, I have one but it doesn't do that for me. 160GB, it tells me I have 148.

If I wanted to sell several thousand Magic the Gathering cards with included about 150+ rares (nothing very valuable), how should I go about it, and what should I charge?

The cards are in pretty good condition overall, and date from Legends to Apocalypse, but mainly Urza's block, Nemesis, etc. Around those few years.

I've had these cards in my closet for 11 years, and I just want them gone.

I wish I had a source for this, but I read something about this "problem" for which I too can only hope. There's a very specific rule about gambling/lotto winning taxes and gifts. It's really exclusive to lottery winners, getting double-taxed. I think there are only a few types of income that you can be double-taxed on. In a way, isn't that part of the death tax and how it plays into the whole debate on it?

I think that the premise of the gift tax was to avoid massive estates being able to be transferred tax free or something to that effect, but from what I've read, it applies to regular gifts during life. There's a $13k limit to each recipient per year, and a $1M lifetime cap.

I am doing a school project on Afghanistan now (I'm in Belgium, so I guess the topic is less sensitive here than I imagine it being in the US?) and my main subject is 'How have the various conflicts that occurred in the country (basically since the Soviet invasion until now) influenced the life of Afghan people?'. I have already found some sources in the form of newspaper articles and a few websites, and I have interviewed a journalist (from a Belgian newspaper) who has been in Afghanistan quite a few times, but I still need more detailed information.

Does anyone know any good sites, articles, witness accounts... that cover this subject?

I posted this in both the gaming and off-topic threads as I thought I'd get more replies that way and it is an off-topic general hardware question as much as a gaming question.

So my gf has a Sony Vaio PCV-A1111L all in one with integrated screen and mobo/processor and I would like to use the screen to play some Wii. The only thing is that it doesnt have any video inputs at all as its an integrated screen. I was thinking about component to USB adapters that process/transcode the input, something like http://www.hdboxpro.com/eng/spec.htm but with USB instead of VGA. Any help on how to achieve this would be appreciated.

I live in Brazil, and I'm using an app on my ipod touch called textfree. I'm using it to text my friends in the US. It says that I don't have to pay but if they text me back do they have to pay like they would be texting to Brazil or to the US? I'm using one of the free US phone numbers they gave me so yeah I'm wondering if I'm costing them money or not because I'd rather not have them pay ridiculous amounts just for texting.

I'm an A/V noob, can a GAFfer please help me out?

Are these speakers

able to be hooked up directly through the back of my HDTV (Hitachi HDX99 plasma) or will I need to buy a receiver?
I would lean toward no but there may be a TV out there that does it.

It is better to have it run through a receiver anyway due to [hopefully] more power. If you don't need a lot of surround sound options, receivers are pretty cheap.

Sensitive? :lol

I wrote a grade-school paper on the USSR during the mid-80s. Phoned the consulate and they sent me all kinds of books and materials for free. I seem to recall getting an inquisitive phone call from some US agency soon after, but will have to check with my folks as my memories are a bit hazy.

Beat that.

I'm writing rules for a game in english and there is this guy who exclusively fights at close quarter. What kind of "class" should I name him?

Melee man?
Brawler?

My english is failing me, I'm pretty sure there is a term adequate to this.

This just occurred to me. I used Windows 3.11 back in the day, and have an as yet uninstalled copy of Windows 7 on my shelf. I've used 98 and 2000 and still run XP now. As for my question, what were Windows 4, 5 and 6? Between 3 and 7 there have been 95, 98, 2000, NT, ME, XP and Vista, so which if any of those were considered as the numbered versions?

According to Wiki:

95/98/ME -> 4.X
2000/XP/2003 -> 5.X
Vista/2008 -> 6.X

Edit: Apparently 7's version number is still 6.X...

Thanks. Here's another one. I was reading about False Vacuum on Wikipedia, and the whole article sort of went over my head due to my lack of physics background. Could anyone please explain what the heck a Vacuum Metastability Event is in layman's terms? All I can glean from the article is that it would be very fast and very bad.

According to quantum mechanics, energy randomly appears in false vacuums. This energy quickly vanishes after a short time. The theory is that the universe is a giant long-lasting false vacuum that could vanish at any time.

Sounds like a load of paranoia to me, though. I:

Does Amazon have a feature where you say what you're willing to pay for an item and if it ever hits that number it auto purchases for you?

I guess that would be bad for business for a fat cat like Amazon but if another online retailer did it, I bet others would be forced to follow.

Couldn't find it in the FAQs. How do you put a hyperlink into a word of your post? You know how posters will put a wikipedia link to something they bring up if it's not common knowledge.

There's a button in the post page with a globe and a link. Highlight something, click that, then type in the url in the popup.

[-URL="linky"]Or you can just do this sans the dash[/URL]

If you ever want to know how to do something you see in a post, quote the person's post.

It's easy!
