So I recently just purchased a laptop for the first time in my life, having always had a job that never required me to be in constant contact with a computer I never really understood just how hot these damn things can get. My first incident started the other day when I left 'The Witcher' running on my computer (my laptop is for personal use) only to come back back a little while later and find that the eraser of a rather unfortunate pencil that had been in contact with my computer was starting to melt.

Anyway Ive looked around for solutions but I would like to know what the people here think. So far I've run across a laptop stand which elevates your computer and a fan that sits beneath it. However since this fan draws power from a USB port I cant help wonder if it actually does any good.

Any suggestions would be appreciated as I plan on using my laptop for lengthy periods of time and would like to avoid any unfortunate incidents.

I was never a fan of USB fans, I think they do more damage. Can I ask where your laptop was when this happened? Like was it on your bed/couch? or was it on a hard surface?

two questions:
1).is it GAF ethical to download a game you already own?

2). how does one retreive a starcraft cdkey from a pc if you lose the jewel case?

long story short: i got a new laptop and im giving away my pc, i want to take starcraft with me but unfortunately all three of my copies of sc: original are either dead or AWOL. so i figure i could torrent a copy, install it with my old cdkey and then use my remaining living broodwar disc for play. Problem is, i dont know how to retreive my old cdkey. :(

I don't know if you are reading this or it's too late, but you can go to BNET and sign up an account and register your copies of Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft and are able to download the latest version installer for each of those. Of course you need your cd-key. Also Registry is your best bet for finding the cd key, google can help you with the location and exact know-how.

I think I have a wisdom tooth coming in, but I'm not sure. The back left on my mouth fucking hurts like a bitch, as if there were a canker sore or something, but I've looked pretty thoroughly and don't think there is one. It's just kind of redder looking, maybe.

Is this probably wisdom tooth cutting through?

If it is, is it just a terrible coincidence it hurts to swallow? What the hell is going on? >:(

1. You know in print after writing a number as a word they'll sometimes put that actual number in brackets after it? For example "there are two (2) ways to do this" or something. Why do they do that?

2. Why do song titles sometimes have part of the lyrics after the title in brackets? Like, "Love Song (Oh yeah baby)" and stuff. Is that because that's the most catchy part and you otherwise might not be able to identify the song on hearing it or something?

3. Why is stuff always priced at x.99 and not one penny more?

1. I think that's just for clarification.

2. Yeah, you're right. Kind of like what people call Teenage Wasteland by the Who is really called Baba O'Riley.

3. It's a psychological trick to put that object into a price bracket of a dollar less, since people will usually look at the dollar amount before the cents amount.

bjork, is there a question you don't know the answer to? Because I want to ask it.

Even if I don't, I can make something up that sounds like it just might be correct. So... no?

It's not always, sometimes stuff is exactly x.00. Other times, it's some random ass x.13 or something.

Depending on the store, the ending amount of cents lets you know specific details about that product.

For example, Store A.

x.99 = normal pricing

x.83 = soon to be discontinued

x.45 = currently discounted

x.35 = permanently discounted

x.20 = inquire about special deal

ect.

They won't tell you this though, although there are websites to guides with specific store "codes" and the like.

.99 is a marketing trick, like mentioned earlier. 9.99 looks like 9.00 to most people, even though it really is 10.00.

Then there's .88 at Walmart... prices falling every day.

The .13 thing I saw on some wine at my store, some discount if you buy 6. I kinda wondered why they didn't just round it down to .00, but didn't lose any sleep over it. :p

I don't think it's to trick you to thinking it's 99c/p cheaper than it is. I believe the 'trick' is to trick you into almost spending a typical financial boundary, for example, you're not willing to spend $30 on a new bluray, but if it's priced at $29.99, it's under your self imposed price ceiling by the bare minimum. That's why consoles are often $299 for example.

I want to know if it's possible for my mom to buy a house at auction or if it's for sale by owner even though my mom has a one year contract with a home agent. For example if she does buy a house at auction, is there a possibility the agent can sue her because she broke a contract?

Then they roll you up in the tax and you end up paying over $30 anyway, unless you live in some place with 0 sales tax.

I don't see how, can't a buyer fire their agent at any point for any reason?

What is Ronaldo's middle name?

Isn't Ronaldo the middle name? Waldo Ronaldo Faldo? I was never a big fan of that show.

I use Windows Vista. When I open a folder, if there are any images in the folder it tries to be all smart and treat it like a folder of photos. So all of a sudden it displays columns like Date Taken, Tags, and Rating instead of useful columns like Date Modified. It's annoying as fuck. I can right-click the folder, go to Customize, then switch it from "Pictures and Videos" to "All items" to get the columns I want. But then I'll have to repeat the whole process the next time I have a folder with at least one image in it.

And even once I've "customized" the folder to work the way I want, I was just now trying to upload a screenshot to tinypic, and the file open dialog still had all the "date taken" and everything, so I can't sort the files by modified date. I hate this.

What do I do, GAF?

A few years ago, I read a news item in which doctors confirmed the notion that drinking a lot of water wouldn't actually help you drop weight or fat, and would only put your kidneys to work like crazy. I'm seemingly unable to find the article now despite using several key word combinations. Anyone knows where or how could I find it?

Anyone knows an audio-editing program in WinXP to make automatically adjusts as noise reduction to several WAV files in a folder? (Think of macros usage in Photoshop)

why does it take vista waaaaaaaay longer to load image preview icons compared to XP and is there a way to speed up the process?

I have a question.
How did those [Word] - Age threads come about. Like, why put age at the end?
I know it probably sounds stupid, but could someone please fill a junior in?

1. Why do people use != instead of /= when they mean "does not equal"?

2. Avatars appear for a second then disappear, is this an issue on my side or Gaf's?

!= is commonly used in programming languages (java, C, etc.) as “not equal to”.

There is also a possible historical explanation:

For cash transactions with a round price, there is a chance that a dishonest cashier will pocket the bill rather than record the sale. For cash transactions with an odd price, the cashier must make change for the customer. This generally means opening the cash register which creates a record of the sale in the register and reduces the risk of the cashier stealing from the store owner.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odd_pricing

regarding the .99$ thing, i remember reading that back in the day it was used as a theft-deterrent for employees. so they had to open the cash register to get that one penny, and ideally the customer/someone else would notice the money not going into the register. compared with if it was 1.00$ even, then they could just take the dollar and no one would notice. not sure if i'm right or not, just throwing it out there.

edit: should have read above. ooops.

Are there any large malls out there that are fully carpeted?

I haven't been inside it for several years, but as I recall the Ontario Mills Mall is all carpeted except for the food court. I don't know that I've ever seen a carpeted food court, come to think of it.

what's this "no calls after ten pm" in America? Larry David made a CYE episode about it and I thought it was beyond histerical

What do you mean? I think that it's considered rude because some people go to sleep around that time to get up early for work, if that's what you mean.

I want to register on a trustable website for which I have to pay with VISA. However, I do not want the name of the website or any other hint on my VISA's billing information. All the website says is "Your Credit Card will be billed by Belator LLC." But will it mention the website?

Shouldn't. But now you gotta tell us what porn site you're subscribing to.

is tinypic a GAF-safe place to host avatars? (I use it to host pics sometimes but don't know about avatars)

my photobucket finally exceeded its bandwidth again :lol
