What do you guys use to disinfect portable devices? Just a plain alcohol wipe, or would that be harmful to the exterior?

I would be wary of alcohol. I know on glasses it can be bad for the coatings they put on.

So what's the difference between:

a while

and awhile

Are they the same?

A while makes sense on its own. Awhile needs to be part of a sentence.

For example, this is technically incorrect, or at least infelicitous.

I don't know why I took so long, but I finally signed up for online banking.

Two days later I get my first phishing email. How the hell did they know?

Your first?

I didn't even open up a bank account till recently, and I've been getting phishing emails for years.

That's my point, it is like they knew exactly when I signed up for it (which bank as well). Do you think my computer might be compromised or something?

Is student loan consolidation a good idea? I've got about $45,000 in loans. Sallie Mae has about $31,000 and the Department of Education has the rest. Right now, I'm paying Sallie Mae about $325 a month. The others are on deferment. I did the math and it'll be over $500 per month when they all go into repayment. I can't afford that. If I can consolidate and get it on a 20 year plan, that should hopefully take it down to around $250-$270 per month. I think I can make that payment and pay a little extra each month to pay it off a little faster.

Didn't you just answer that yourself?

Anyway, the key is in the interest rate.

I have an old PC that I want to move downstairs for mum but she needs her daily (hourly) Farmville fix. The PC is old so it doesn't have a Wifi card built in. I have an Apple Airport Extreme upstairs paired to all my Macs but what would be the best way to get a wireless signal to that old PC?

I've looked at NewEgg but all the reviews for USB sticks seem awful... Don't really want to spend more than $30 on this.

I'm also wondering if I just get a Router like this one then would I be able to set it up as a wireless bridge or something?

Sorry but WiFi was never relevant to my interests:(

Thanks.

I got a cheap $15 USB wireless adapter from ebay for my computer upstairs and so far I haven't got a single drop and I've been getting excellent speeds as I mainly stream videos and music. And if you're going to be using it for Farmville there should be no issues at all.

So I've done pretty terribly on my last few tests in a class and am 99% sure a C isn't even possible and the drop date has passed. Is there any point in continuing to attend the class?

Edit: it is a college class

If it's an elective, then do what you can, since you might not want to retake it.
If it's an essential part of your curriculum, then you might just want to retake it anyway, unless you're counting on your term GPA for scholarship or financial aid.
Also depends on your college's rules on whether a retake would replace the old grade or averaging.

How in the bloody hell do I connect a Official Playstation Mic to my new slim.

The Mic was previously synced up to my 60gig. I have tried plugging the one cord to ear-piece can't get it to sync. Tried from slim to base doesn't work. Tried leaving the slim off plugging the stuff in and turning it on. Didn't work.

How do I do it? Feel so very stupid.

I have this and it's fantastic. About the same performance as my Linksys PCI card as far as my network is concerned. You should take reviews with a grain of salt sometimes, a lot of times people are only more inclined to bother writing a review if they've had a negative experience with something rather than if it just worked.

What did New Coke taste like?
When they introduced Diet Coke, it wasn't Coca-Cola w/ sweetener, but an entirely new recipe. It was popular.

They introduced "New Coke" which was mostly the Diet Coke recipe but with sugar (HFCS). It was not popular. "Coca-Cola Classic" was reintroduced and shortly replaced New Coke.

They finally introduced Coca-Cola Zero, which is the Coca-Cola Classic recipe but w/ sweetener instead of sugar (HFCS). I'm not sure why this product has only come out within the last few years.

I'm certain I don't want to make a thread for this. How difficult is it to learn elementary level kanji comprehension? My university offers Japanese language classes & I was wondering. Truth be told I want to learn just to be able to stay current with my favorite ongoing manga series.

Elementary comprehension will take a few years.

If you mean on the toolbar, the use Control + Z. Then again that's close to Control + S too.

Unfortunately a few years of uni level courses will get you nowhere close to reading manga. You'll be an expert at reading textbook dialogue though!

I've got some for you guys. It involves Windows 7 and Mac OS X. Forgive my lack of knowledge on the Windows front; I've been a Mac user for about 8 years now and want to switch back, but I have many questions before I do:

1. Control Panel vs. System Preferences (where exactly IS Control Panel?) Why are there applications in Program Files AND the Control Panel(like Sync Center and Default Programs)? This drives me absolutely bonkers. In OSX, at least to my knowledge, all the items in System Preferences are only accessible from System Preferences (without searching, that is). What's up with that? Not to mention that "shortcut" in the Start Menu...

2. Installing and Uninstalling on both platforms... OSX: Just drag the app to the Trash (but what about other files and folders?! But is that really all?) Win7: I can't just drag them to the Recycle Bin? Why not? Must I use Programs & Features application (found in Control Panel...what's that about?) to fully remove programs? Is that really all? Where do trace

3. What exactly is the difference between a Link and Shortcut in Windows 7? How does this differ from OSX's "alias" system?

4. Where exactly are applications/programs saved in Win7? For instance, are all Steam and Steam related files and folders and everything else having to do with the actual application stored in the Steam folder within Program Files? If so, how does this differ from OSX's method of just storing the app in the Applications Folder? Where does OSX store the rest of the files that an application might use/need? I've never really known.

5. How many items in the Start Menu can only be navigated to by actually using the Start Menu, if any? Where are their "real" locations?

6. Any other fundamental differences between the two operating systems I should understand? I'll probably have more questions in the future...

There are companies that compile information like that and sell it to phishers. You're fine. (probably)

Program Files is where the applications are installed to by default. Control Panel is your System Preferences and contains a window where it lists your installed programs and gives you an easy option to uninstall them from there. The programs aren't installed twice. Control Panel in Win7 is in Start Menu -> Control Panel. A neat thing with Windows 7 as well is you can go to the Start Menu and start typing for something you're looking for, it'll search your computer (starting in your Start Menu items) for your query, similar to the Finder in OSX.

Windows relies heavily on the Registry for data and what programs are installed correctly. There is nothing stopping you from just deleting the files, but Windows will have references in the OS to these files and if a program is uninstalled improperly, it may (and probably will) prevent you from installing a new or upgraded copy of the program over because it'll think it's installed already, but it can't find the files for some reason. By this point you're stuck.

Pyrokai said:

Not sure what links are in Win7, but a shortcut is a file that, when opened, opens a file (usually an executable) at another point in the system. It's essentially a timesaver and doesn't require you to go through your Program Files to find the executable itself.

No idea about OSX, but unless you change it, Windows saves programs in the Program Files folder. Each application should (some don't for some reason) save all their related hard data (ie: steamapps) into their related folder. Steam, by default saves its' games in "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\" with subfolders for "common" (non-Valve games, usually) and "<yourusername>" for user-specific copies of Source games.

Generally the Start Menu is only a holder of shortcuts for installed applications, much like the OSX dock is (but far less specific). Not sure what Start Menu specific items there are, I'm fairly sure it's just a bunch of shortcuts to items that are elsewhere on the system.

Pyrokai said:

Mostly compatibility stuff. PCs have differing hardware and so on. Stuff you'd know already.

Is it a big deal if I get a 'C' in my Psychology and Anthropology classes (they're Gen. Ed. classes, not necessary for my Philosophy major)?

I am scrupulous about this kind of stuff, although to be honest I've been slacking off in school-work lately.

got my wallet stolen. There was three credit cards in there, my driving license, and a health care id (which I hope didn't have my SSN, though I can't remember for sure). Besides cancelling all these cards and asking for a new id from the DMV, anything i should do?

Windows has a registry which is really the settings for every piece of software on the machine. That, to my knowledge, is the sole reason simply dragging the application folder to the recycle bin won't "uninstall" it on a PC, because the computer still thinks it's there because of it's info in the registry.

An application icon/file in OSX is really a folder, you just don't see all the contained files. You can "open" the file though and it will go inside and show you all of the individual files.

I don't believe the start menu has any exclusive links; all files are executables found somewhere in Program Files or maybe Windows folder.

How does one become a mod on Gaf? Do they get approached or do they apply?
Just to clarify I have zero interest in becoming one, I'm just genuinely curious.

You have to run a gauntlet involving battling with trolls, defeating bish in single combat, and riding a tiger.

Maybe more. I was doing pretty well, but the tiger part threw me.

Gaf gold members only. I think you have to pay someone called Ashes1396 like maybe twenty pounds sterling to get your foot in the door. ;)

Laptops been bluescreening lately. Formatted thinking it was a software problem and it kept doing it. Memory errors came up when I did get it to open a program. Formatted again and only installed ccleaner to wipe free space and defraggler to run a defrag. Explorer.exe now crashes on start up and then bluescreens when nothing else is even installed.
Is it the RAM or HDD?

Might want to subscribe to LifeLock, seeing as all your information is out there now and you don't know who has it. Someone could open a new credit card account with your ID and ruin your credit and you'd have no idea.

ram seems likely.
you can easily test it with a memtest boot disc/stick. or if you have an ubuntu cd, there is a memtest boot option too.

i THINK windows 7 has a memory test option on boot too, but not sure how that works

W7 mem test found nothing. I tried taking out each stick and seeing if one was dead but they both worked, even if I couldn't get it to do anything with so little memory.
One is a 2gb samsung and the other is a 1gb from a some brand I've never heard of. Can't remember it right now.
I'm pretty sure I have an ubuntu CD somewhere, link to a tut on how to do the test?

boot it and on the start screen at the very beginning you will be given a memory test option
