I bought a 10' USB cable on Monoprice for my printer and today I was reading the manual and it states "use USB 6ft or under". Whats the reason for that and is it a big deal? The cable should arrive tomorrow or Friday.

Also, at what size hdmi cable does pq begin to suffer? I got a 10' one as well to replace my current one (hooked up to ps3). Thanks!
there is no picture quality degradation with hdmi per se, it either works or it is REALLY obvious that it doesn't work properly. up to 10meters (i don't know your imperial shenanigans) should be fine with any quality

should be sort of the same deal with the usb cable.

I've got a 25' HDMI cable. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002PWRL80/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Works wonders. Was $10 when I bought it. Don't believe monster's bullshit about needing to pay $50 a foot for undiscernable difference in quality.

Can depression make you dumber? If so, is there anything I can do about it?
First question, yes It has also been linked to the dulling of your senses and memory problems.

Second. Seek medical help and counseling. Your brain can recover. It is a magnificent organ.

Where can I find some slick screensavers for windows 7, like the one with bubbles? I've googled it but I always end up at garbage websites.

How do you get a flag beside your member title?

Like Some users have for their Custom Title: Member (Flag here)?
It was during the World Cup, when vocal members for their country were being rooted for. Only a mod can give you it.

Can someone tell me if this sentence makes sense:

"The corollary argument to this contradiction leads to more problems concerning the allegorical nature of Brobdingnag Liliput's relation to humanity."

Do I need "argument" in there, or can I take it out?

So I've been a victim of card fraud. £192.50 was spent on "MICROSOFT *XBOX"

I have insurance against this, so have my money back. This question is just out of interest, really.

There were numerous transactions of £42.50, £14.99 and £19.99. Would these be MS point cards to be sold later on? is £42.50 a Gold subscription?

Also, before these transactions, £42.50 was CREDITED to my account from Microsoft. Would there be any reason this would occur without phoning and asking for a refund?
I take it the other transactions were also "MICROSOFT *XBOX".

If they're not buying points/subscriptions from those instant e-mail sites to sell on (I'm sure buying points via microsoft puts them onto your gamertag so non transferable unless...) what they're doing instead is setting up gamertags, buying a load of stuff (suscriptions, points) and then selling the accounts on. I am not sure what happens to resulting accounts when the card company issues a refund due to fraudulant usage.

The credited seems a little weird. I know sometimes companies do test transactions on accounts. Related?

What exactly are you trying to say by "corollary argument"?

Wait a day or so, then send an email and remind them they need to pay. Be nice about it or they may just not pay.

Hmm, maybe so.

I have all my money back, so it simply was curiosity. I think buying/selling accounts with a years gold seems the most likely.

What would happen if you shot a grenade?

I'm watching Hard Target with Van Damme and he shoots this out of some cunt with a chest full of grenades. So Gaf, hows this shit going to go down. We need some myth busting esque testing.

Hmm, I have a stupid question.

I have to make a presentation that's going to involve a lot of graphs. I remember one GAFfer recommending a book that instructs you on how to make information beautiful. The examples he (or she!) showed us here in GAF were great.

What is the name of the book?

Dunno, but sounds like an Edward Tufte book.

Really just posting this in here because I can't create threads:

Does anyone know of any forums/sites/communities focusing on the provolvement of non-human animals?

With serious discussions on the ethics of uplifting animals, what methods/tools are required to do so and various other theoretical quandaries that need to be answered before any attempt at doing this to any species can be made.

Tonight I feel I have hit a new low with my posture -- I have tied myself to my chair using a belt in order to physically stop myself from slouching. I don't think this is a particularly tenable solution, has anyone here successfully beaten bad posture? What would you recommend?

I've obviously been thinking about exercises that strengthen the back and the core, and maybe picking up one of those medicine / exercise balls to sit on, or one of those chairs you kneel on...
I remember Wii Fit actually improving my posture but I don't have that anymore.

Any other suggestions?

Not dumber, just slower and clumsier. And I have terrible memory. Forgetting names and such. I forgot the names of my gf parents. Excersize helps to get those serotonine running again. Do it!

Is it normal that the lights on my wireless router blink almost as crazy when my pc is offline as they do when I'm actually using my internet? The pc is connected via cable to it and the wireless network is passworded.

The back of my throat/mouth feels dry. It's not actually dry, but it feels terrible. Tried hot water and honey, nearly threw up because of the taste. Tried a hot shower wit the door stopped, it got better for a while but it's back to how it was.
Anything I should do? I also had a slight runny nose earlier but that stopped about an hour after I woke up.
I have no allergies and I get sick maybe once a year now, if that, and its usually nothing worse than a cold. Don't know what it could be.

I just turned my phone (Droid 1) back on after a few weeks from being completely turned off. I turn it on and it has a low battery. Meh, I start to leave it on the charger. Yeah it says its getting power (you know the whole charging icon thing?_), but the battery STAYS at 5 percent! What should I do?

EDIT: Nevermind, it's doing it.

I find that the dry winter air can really dry out my nose and throat. If you're staying in your house/apartment, try putting pot of water on the stove and letting it simmer for a few hours to put some humidity in the air.

Alright here is a question

If I send a confidential email containing attachments from my college email to another students college email would my school be able to see what I am sending??

Wow, good ear. Thanks!

EDIT:

New question. In layman's terms, what is windows registry, and why is it such polarizing topic pertaining to security?

It's kind of like an index. If something in it's vast lists is changed by someone/thing, it could screw up a reference and break something. Pertaining to security, a program can re-reference something in it and send it to another file.

I'm not an expert or have to deal with the registry much at all, but that's what I know.

I currently have a i7 quad core laptop. After almost a year I still don't understand why I bought it, seeing as how 99% of the time I'm using it for interwebs. So I'm selling it.

Now, for the replacement, should I get a iPod Touch 4g, Archos variant, or a Netbook? For reference, I have a crappy clamshell phone from 2006 with a minutes and text plan, and an old desktop that takes care of all my extended paper needs. So I've been questioning the need of a netbook, and researching the convenience of a small web-browser + camera. Should I buy now? Wait? Go for the netbook, ipod or archos? My life is in your hands, GAF!

if you don't need a large portable screen (and by large I mean netbook large versus ipod touch small) then just get an ipod or archos. I've got an ipod touch and iphone 3GS. The browser is the same on them but it's definitely the best mobile browser I've used yet.

So i've had the same job for over a year now, and at the moment a position has opened up that I've been advised to apply for (in the same company). My resume that I used to apply for my current job is pretty much irrelevant now (I'm 20, most of the details were irrelevant then) but all that really leaves are details and accomplishments from my current job. Is it ok to just have those (as well as personal details) because I'm applying within the company? I'm really unsure about this.

One of the PS3 games I bought today had some marks so I decided to wipe them clean. Although I was mostly wiping from the centre to the edge in straight lines, I did swiggle the cloth around as some marks weren't fully coming off. Should I be worried?

Doubt it. Unless they are significant, scratches are only really bad if they're on top. I doubt you'd be able to remove info from the disc by swiggling your cloth :) Unless you have an industrial swiggler? :D
