"Marvel is excited to announce an all-new era for the God of Thunder in brand new series, THOR, written by Jason Aaron (Thor: God of Thunder, Original Sin) complimented with art from Russell Dauterman (Cyclops).

This October, Marvel Comics evolves once again in one of the most shocking and exciting changes ever to shake one of Marvel’s “big three” – Captain American, Iron Man and Thor – Marvel Comics will be introducing an all-new THOR, GOD OF THUNDER. No longer is the classic male hero able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjölnir, a brand new female hero will emerge will who will be worthy of the name THOR. Who is she? Where did she come from and what is her connection to Asgard and the Marvel Universe?

“The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription,” says Marvel editor Wil Moss. “The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

Series writer Jason Aaron emphasizes, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

THOR is the latest in the ever-growing and long list of female-centric titles that continues to invite new readers into the Marvel Universe. This female THOR is the 8th title to feature a lead female protagonist and aims to speak directly to an audience that long was not the target for Super Hero comic books in America: women and girls."

Wait, what the hell is going on with Thor? Is something happening lately that would deem him so unworthy of holding the hammer that they're justifying this?

Eh.

I would have rather seen Marvel start a new female character afresh instead of retroactively giving a 'male title' a female protag but it's okay I suppose.

Wait, what? Does this happen often in comics? Only really read batman and watchmen. So does this get rid of the previous continuity? I'm confused.

Meh it's just sales gimmick, they will probably reverse back some time down the line because Comics.

Though I would love to be proven wrong.

If you hold the hammer you get the power of Thor.

You don't become Thor.

Thor is Thor. He's an actual living breathing person/God.

Anyways, I like the idea regardless of the nitpicking.

I dont get comic book continuity. Will male Thor die or something to make room for this new Thor? Or will Thor just suddenly become a girl with no explanation?

Im confused, are they calling this new character "thor" too?

Thor is still around with a new powerset

Thor has been an alien too ya know. This isn't really uncharacteristic of Marvel.

Jason Aaron is still writing it, right? I've been picking his run up in trades. As long as he's still writing it, I'll keep picking it up.

I'm glad they're giving the mantle to a different character instead of randomly turning the existing character into a woman.
Please be Lady Sif.

According to the article the woman is someone new taking up the mantle of Thor. If it's anything like previous Thor stories, current Thor will probably do something cocky and dumb, get his powers taken from him, and Odin will find a replacement.
It's currently unclear who exactly is filling the role of Thor going forward, as the original character wasn't gender-swapped.

I'm good with this. Hopefully it won't end up being a scantily-clad version of Thor either...proper armor, made for battle and not boob accentuation.

Old Thor will be renamed Chris

no it has nothing to do with the Marvel cinematic universe Chris Hemsworth what are you talking about original character do not steal

Well he did inadvertantly get the Earth blown up by a Celestial in Uncanny Avengers.

Thor as we know him will still be around (not sure what we're supposed to call him) using his axe Jarnbjorn

I said this in the other thread but I'll say it here:

That's not how Thor works.

Thor is his name, not a title or an alias. You get the powers with the hammer, but you don't become Thor by being the thunder god any more than you become Odin by ruling Asgard.

This is dumb.

She's not Thor just like Beta Ray Bill wasn't Thor.

Guys, of course they will backtrack in a year. They do this all the time. Wolverine is "dying" later this year, of course he won't stay dead though.

Just appreciate it for the year or so of cool stories that couldn't happen any other way.

huh?

I just want specifics, what the hell did Thor do?

I'm perpetually behind due to trade waiting, but was it because of the thing with Apocalypse/Celestials in Uncanny Avengers or did something happen in Original Sin?
