Thor is now the goddess of Thunder

Correct. Thor has innate powers unrelated to the hammer. The hammer makes him much more formidable, but his status as "god of thunder" which allows him to summon storms and control weather, generate raw "godforce" from his body, and his massive strength all predate his being able to pick up mjolnir. His mother is also an elder god, more powerful than Odin and Thor has some Ill defined earth based powers related to that.

There's also the issue that Jarnbjorn while not mjolnir is still DISGUSTINGLY powerful, and Thor just killed exitar (!!!) With it in uncanny Avengers. Mjolnir as impressive as it is can't get away with that one.
Golden age Thor could do some crazy shit

Why does the helmet cover half her face?

I'm fine with it. Writers change how powers and characters work all the time. I imagine this will be a short-term publicity stunt, rather than an enduring change.

Pretty much. Usually I'm against characters being changed, just for the sake of change. I always think it's a better idea to just write NEW characters. That said, comics as a medium have a long history of changing characters for new iterations. So I have no issue with them messing with "continuity" (lol I know), so to speak.

Neat. Hopefully they stick with it. The lack of change in the status quo is why I avoid comics.

Man, that press release is so heavy handed "This isn't some FEMALE VERSION of Thor, She's Thor!" What? no that's exactly what she is. Calling her Thor doesn't magically make her your own OC character pls don't steal.

Thats not at all similar to this. Yellowjacket is an alias.

not familiar with this :O was she a superheroine?

i'll look it up. it is interesting for me, cuz i think this thing is more done male is made female, and not so much the other way around.

i wonder why

has it ever worked? like a huge success kind of 'worked'? when an originally male character is being taken up by a female and not in the cases like Bat-Woman, but in cases like this (as in the new person simply takes up the actual name and everything)

...

more curiosity, has there ever been a Cat-Man (derivation from Cat Woman)? Or only Batman and Spiderman and Mr. Marvel derivates to BatWoman, SpiderWoman and Ms. Marvel?

sorry for all the curiosity questions. i used to read comics when was younger, but i grew up in asia and had more access to mangas than american comics, but i have always been interested. so, thanks to anyone who'd entertain me with any answers, in advance

There is a Catman and he is badass.

Also I feel like this thor is absolutely a time limited thing (as if it was not obvious to begin with but in addition-) her costume is so impersonal that it does not strike me as a character they intend to really flesh out and develop,

It's disappointing they don't have the balls to stick with it
Why don't introduce some other female god of thunder to compete with Thor or take his place since he himself is unworthy.
Later he can regain the honour or wielding the hammer but the female thunder god gets to stick around (since her pantheon would be different)

Cap is black, thor a woman, so what are they going to change to Ironman?

Neck-beard atheist or cute Japanese girl. Take your pick. Or maybe, IRON-DOG!

I assumed this was par the course for comics.

One year a hero is white, the next black, the next a horse, the next an alien, gay, straight, religious, all powerful, no power, young, old etc etc till they eventually reboot them to their original form then start all over.

Seems perfectly reasonable, it's all just fictional characters, right? I've heard crazier shit than gender swaps, and I'm pretty casual about comics.

Cool. I am not really a Thor fan, although the recent thor movie wasn't bad (Loki was awesome), but I think this could shape into something really awesome.

How do you know thats not going happen?

Yeah, its one of the many lines of bs people come into comic threads with to justify why they dont read comics anymore.

Its certainly why I moved away from reading as much main continuity superhero stuff. Is there a problem with that?

It's not bullshit, though. I understand why you're defensive about this, but it's my honest opinion. I feel it's hard to get attached to stories and events that in the end will just be retconned by the next guy responsible for that one character.

My problem with this is is that the numbering is going to start over! Can't we just continue instead of going to #1 again and again?

I'm all for more female led comics and I've heard good things about the current Thor book so I'm sure it'll work out.

But, I am pretty disappointed that they are doing this after canceling Sif's ongoing. They didn't support a book led by an already existing female character written by a woman :/

Love the design. Should of had Odin create her to balance Thor if he ever got out of hand instead. Not digging the new idea of her being the worthy one after all these years. Ill bet theyll revert it like they hav with some characters already like Cap, Spiderman, ect..

why not just make a cool new female character without using an old character as a crutch? its still interesting news though
