Thor is now the goddess of Thunder

running out of stories.... what?

and it shouldnt be a social comment

Running out of stories tends to be the impetus for big comic shakeups. When they've exhausted what they think they can do with a character, or setting, they change them or add something big. I doubt the conversion stated as "Y'know, we should really make Thor a female. That suits the character archetype more", but more like "... Why don't we make him girl".

And on the social comment part, it doesn't have to be. But their comments and way of revealing it makes me think it is. "This isn't Thora, this is Thor". "Should he be worthy, well they'll have to change the 'he' part". That all reads to me like "Hey, one of our strongest characters is a woman. Men and women are equal", which is fine if this lasts. But inevitably the 'true' Thor will return to the helm, as these characters always do, and undermine the whole thing.

If Thor stays a woman from here on out I'll tip my hat. But equality as a comic selling gimmick is so blegh. Commit, or don't, and with the Avengers movies to come still having a male actor cast as Thor I am skeptical regarding how long this change will last.

I wish Esad Ribic was drawing for this. His work on the God Butcher art was masterful (shout out to the gaffer who created that thread, btw, that was a fun read).

I do like what I'm seeing of Dauterman's stuff, however.

What comics do you read

I don't read any monthlys. Last trades I read and liked were Sweet Tooth, Animal Man, Locke and Key and the recent, Azzarello Wonder Woman. I hated the Spider-Man "Ends of Earth" trade and Superior Spider-man is the dumbest thing ever.

If this means no more hot God Butcher style art by Esad Ribic, meh. Next time gender swap an ugly character like the Punisher.

(Half serious.)

The more recent Lady Punisher is pretty attractive.

This is interesting. Art/design looks amazing. Everyone is right about the whole name thing. His name is Thor. It's not his title.

His name is Thor Odinson. There is also the mantle of Thor. Eric Masterson notably carried the mantle of Thor before eventually becoming Thunderstrike.

Or Dargo Ktor:

Anything they do to change Thor is ok with me because I have always found 'him' rather boring.

Meh most of Thor/JiM is a whole ensemble of characters maybe youd like one of them in the comics they all get a fair share of panel for being secondary to the big blonde oaf.

the mere ideas of running out of stories is ridiculous. she isnt the the first to wield mjolnir, and i doubt she'll be the last. i dont think this a social commentary, but more of an attempt to try to grab new readers. you are really making something out of nothing with this

One of comics tropes is gender swapping everyone.

Hell it's a trope you see in a lot of writing.

Some more disturbing than you could ever believe.

The things you see.....you can't unsee them.

story behind this?

The Asgardian Wars
New Mutants Special & Uncanny X-Men Annual #9

While enjoying a holiday on a Greek island, the New Mutants & Storm were kidnapped by Loki's henchmen. He planned to bewitch Storm, who had lost her mutant powers by turning her into the new God of Thunder in Asgard. Since he didn't require the New Mutants, he handed them over to the Enchantress. When threatened, Magik attempted to teleport them all to safety. However, her mutant power clashed with the Enchantress' magical wards and therefore the team was scattered across Asgard.

Magik was held captive by the Enchatress, while the other New Mutants experienced different adventures as they travelled back to save her:

Karma survived a walk across the desert, during which time she lost all the weight she'd gained when possessed by the Shadow King.
Sunspot enjoyed being a mysterious Shadow Skinned warrior adored by the local Asgardian barmaids.
Cypher was treated as a slave boy in the feast halls, and later entered into a Gestalt merge with Warlock to escape.
Cannonball saved a dwarf princess, but was wounded in battle.
Magma was tricked into eating Faerie food, which transformed her into an elf.
Wolfsbane fell in love with the wolf prince, Hrimhari.
Mirage was adopted by the pegasus Brightwind, and therefore gained the powers of the Valkryrior.

Eventually they thwarted the Enchantress. However, they remained trapped on Asgard and Storm was still bewitched by Loki's lies. Due to the psychic link between Magik & her best friend, Shadowcat received a subliminal message in her sleep. Cyclops used the thunderbolts from Arkon The Imperion to transport the X-Men to Asgard.

The X-Men divided into two search parties. One half discovered Cannonball & Magma who were forced to deliver a new mystical hammer for Loki. The other X-Men located the other New Mutants, but were soon kidnapped by Loki.

The action came to ahead when the mutants confronted Loki in the Great Hall of Heroes. Wolverine was severely poisoned, and Storm struggled to understand why her closest friends were trying to hurt her new friend Loki. When she took possession of the mystical hammer Storm transformed into a Goddess & began to attack Wolverine with the power of lightning. It was when Hela appeared to collect Wolverine's soul that Mirage was forced to intervene, trying to fight the Goddess with her new Valkyrie powers. The sight forced Storm to snap back to her senses. She used her powers to fight Hela, and then Loki.

All the mutants were returned to Earth. Everyone was returned to normal, except for Karma (who did not regain her obese weight) and Mirage (who retained her Valkyrie abilities).

I stand by my statement. Anything that annoys bro comics fans is awesome. Let's feminize some bro game characters. Comics and games are for everyone.

ugh, those tweets... like last week with Batgirl, comic news that doesn't result in women characters being dressed in even less clothing always brings out the scumbags...

theres no gender swap though..
But there's people coming here thinking it is because they don't read the OP's link. If there was a gender swap, it just screams lazy writing. Then there's people thinking that gender swapping would actually SHAKE UP the Marvel Universe. Please.

They went on The View, which has a mostly female audience, with a comic announcement (comics being mostly thought of as a male hobby) that pertains to a male character being replaced by a female one. Of course it's a social comment that they hope people will latch onto to drive sales. And that I hate.

If they committed to it that'd be different. But solely by having the mainstream representation of the character remain male for the coming years (with Avengers 2 and 3), this is negated almost entirely for me. It's a weak gimmick move unless they commit to it.

Gender swapping comic trope? I don't think gender swapping happens that often. There are female variations of male heroes that happen a lot. Supergirl/Superman, Spider-Man/Spider-Girl/Spider/Woman.

All the Bat people. Etc.

That isn't a gender swap.

In all of my years of reading comics I barely recall any big gender swaps. Loki?

Maybe people are referring to Manga?

What part of "This woman is Thor" is unclear? Marvel has been pretty clear about this characters name.

It's a woman who becomes Thor in title because she is the new wielder of Mjolnr. Happens sometimes.

The reason they are being all "No, this is Thor. THEE THOR!" is marketing spin to attract non-comic book readers who might be interested in this. That's why its on The View.

Lol, you caught me, I'm no true comics fan and should be excluded from comics talk, because I didn't like murderer Spider Man.

not liking spock is the only reasonable thing youve said so far

My problem with comics remains their eternal state: with very rare exceptions, no one dies, no on ages, no stories ever end unless they become financially untenable.

My problem with this is not so much that Thor is now a girl. My problem is that characters in comics never go away, they just get restarted endlessly.

Yet another gross grab for headlines by doing something that shouldn't need a fucking The View announcement.

Give me a break.

Edit: to clarify, I think it's cool, but fuck the view
