THPS is much better than skate

The Tony Hawk games are so much better to play. The skate games have always been slow and unresponsive. The realistic gameplay is nowhere to be found.

It's 2025 and things have not changed for the skateboarding genre, Tony Hawk just keeps on winning.

you're not wrong but i'd say it's

better, not as many > as you think

I got to the Skate start screen where you need an EA account and deleted it. I'll take your word for it.

Really enjoyed THPS 3+4 after getting used to it again.

You guys are missing the big picture here. EA built a PoC for a skateboarding live service game. Epic is going to add a skateboarding mode into Fortnite, killing off Skate, which will make you all happy. And then they're going to have actual skateboarders and skateboarding legends promote Fortnite skateboard mode, have a bunch of skins, and custom original board designs, and you're all going to love it because, why wouldn't you?

I do prefer Tony Hawk a lot, it's basically my favorite gameplay and video game series, but I do enjoy Skate too every now and then, different purposes.

There is a reason why THPS basically dropped dead as soon as skate 1 came out.
I think it was more due to Tony Hawk fatigue rather than Skate being "better".

The thing with Skate is that it doesn't really have much depth or challenge, it's great for relaxing and free skating on a more grounded level, while Tony Hawk is a lot more technical and offers a lot more to do gameplay wise if you're really into it.

What was always ridiculous to me was people claiming that Skate was better because tony hawk was "easier" just because it was arcade while Skate was "simulation". This always seemed like just an edgy take from people who wanted to appear mature and cool lol

Both are cool for different reasons, but if I did have to only pick one, it would definitely be Tony Hawk.

Shit. Am I going to need to install Epic Launcher on my PC?

tony hawks is not good anymore.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3+4 is arguably the best game in the series as long as you don't hold the 4th's mission structure in high regards. It only released a few months back.

The new skate is ass but skate 1-3 are the best skateboard games ever. There is a reason why THPS basically dropped dead as soon as skate 1 came out.
Yeah because the series became a punk/influencer simulator instead of a skateboarding game. They also tried to do weird low budget spin-offs like Downhill. They tried to bring it back with HD and 5 but the people making those did not understand what the series was about on a mechanical level.

skate 1 had a novel idea, and brought some much needed fresh air into the genre. but instead of improving the more grounded gameplay of the first game, they tried to copy THPS, and failed miserably

Thug pro is free on PC btw.

Thug Pro is really the best Tony Hawk experience in my opinion.
I did a lot of modding for it (ported over all Proving Ground levels with new additions etc), it's a really great game. And unlike the modern remakes, it has text chat and a lobby with server browsers, modes and maps selection etc...

I literally keep replacing modern slop with PS2 games. Skate 4? I got Thug pro. Madden 26? I got NFL 2k5 with the 2K25 mod. College football 26? I got ncaa football 06 with the NEXT mod. It's kinda funny and sad how bad modern sports games are. Basically 70 dollar casinos. Nothing there for sim guys like me.

Yo you can play NFL 2k5 with a 2025 roster? I'm interested, tell me more.

I think you had to be there for the cultural phenomenon that was THPS when it came out. It was Wii like penetration. This was a time when gaming was still a hobby and not just an assumed default activity for every breathing person, but it brought over all the kids who didn't play video games. I was a senior in high school and it took over. Really hadn't seen that much penetration since Mortal Kombat. THPS 1-3 are really untouchable. The 3 after that were in the tier below. Anything after that is just cash in slop.

Skate was alright. It never hooked me though.

I tried the demo for Skate. Didn't like it. The end.

For me Skate's value lies in its collision/hitboxes which make for good montages.

Always was. Its like Tetris or Balatro, you can literally play it for 15 mins or 5 hours straight. I never got the same feeling with Skate to just randomly cruise around.

Once I played Skate 1 there was no going back. When it clicks with the sticks and tricks it becomes far superior to THPS. And this comes from someone who absolutely loved THPS 3 & 4.

Remember that time well. The original was a fucking revelation. And the amount of "extreme" sports games that came out trying to replicate it straight after was insane! Skate never hit the same. It tried too hard to be different yet never hit in the same way THPS did. And I agree- 1 to 3 were peak Tony Hawks games. Playing part 3 on my PS2 was an experience I'll never forget!

It depends what you want to do...
If you just want to free skate around, relax, and trying to focus on some spots, doing specific things like that, it's fine and can be fun. There's more sense of speed / momentum and physics than in Tony Hawk.

However, if you're into scoring, combos etc, Tony Hawk offers stuff that is just completely absent from the Skate series. Reaching a high multiplier, high combo, and decide between landing it to score it, or keeping going but risking losing everything, is a thrill, an adrenaline rush, that you absolutely can't get from Skate.
The fast paced gameplay, the sensations, the high skill ceiling, the depth, always trying to get better and pulling off insane stuff. It's amazing and Skate doesn't offer that.

It just really depends on what you're looking for. I prefer Tony Hawk, but I can also enjoy Skate for different reasons.

It's like SSX vs Steep.

Yeah, absolutely. Not that Skate is a simulator, but it's less arcadey than THPS. When it comes to snowboard games I only want stuff like SSX. Arcade, but with a great snowy feel. I loved how I got a sensation of difference between the icey and powder tracks.

What THPS does amazingly though is the sense of fun and imagination. I remember a track in 3 where you activated an earthquake and it changed the track. It blew my mind as a kid.

3+4 is just a lame remake, i mean an actual new game. i rather play the first two tony hawk games.

THPS 1&2 was my jam. I wasn't a scateboarder, so the more realistic approach of Skate didn't appeal to me.

I'll take those clunky arcade-like controls any day of the week.

Nothing lame about it. The levels and mechanics are top notch. The goals are abundant. Having a photo mode to look for that last collectible and expanding sessions from two minutes to an hour are fantastic quality of life additions. Being able to play player created levels with custom goals is a gift that keeps on giving. It also finally has custom skaters that look like people instead of humanoid blobs. As much as I like the first Tony Hawk for the physics and levels, it feels like a demo after being exposed to all the offerings of the new release. Only reasons I would turn the second game on for is moon physics and ridiculously proportioned custom parks.

P.S. It also has three new levels. Movie Studios, Waterpark, and Pinball.

You're convincing me, I might have to reconsider and get it. I got an old copy of 4 before the remake to see what the goal system was like, and it's cool, but I think I would enjoy the smoothness of the new product.
