Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

Also,

Who the hell put areas in the middle of the map that are 'out of bounds'. They are easily reachable, they are not on the edge of the map and they allow access across areas of the map. If you didn't want people shooting through them put a wall there.

If you did want people shooting through them, why the hell are they out of bounds?

It's little stuff like this that just screams lazy. Like, what visual hint have I been given that I am not supposed to go there? It's very easy to get to and does not appear to be substantively different than terrain I am allowed to chill in.

Gotta retrofit campaign levels to work online, I suppose.

Yeah, this is a reasonable reaction to this game. Sure. Totally understandable.

People are getting pissed because it seems to be intentionally designed to not be as good, in our opinion anyway, as the first one. That is why emotions are running high.

It's just not fun. Plus add on all the other legit complaints. This should've been an easy win for Respawn and they're messing it up badly. Oh well.

Wow, this game is fuckin cool. I'd always wanted to play T1 but didn't have an Xbox or Origin. 15 seconds into my first match I was pulling a battery out of an enemy Titan.

Horizontal sensitivity seems a bit too high, the jump feels a bit short, and it's hard to get used to how you'll react to hitting geometry while you're in the air/running, but I'll figure it out.

I'm stoked to have a new multiplayer game this fall.

I don't understand how it's not reasonable. Maybe that poster doesn't like the game and thinks it's bad. It's not like people here haven't written great posts on the game's flaws, both in comparison to 1 and in a vacuum.

So far from my anecdotal experience all my friends that played and enjoyed the first game, find the tech test too be completely off putting. 2 of my friends who never had an xbox or PC, absolutely love this beta.

Which makes sense. If you didn't play the first game it's impossible too feel the issues that are there for the people that have played it. I'm just shocked that the sequel to one of my favourite games this gen feels so different from the first game.

Their design philosophy is obviously changed, I'm just not sure why it needed to be changed in the first place when the first game was so well received.

So what's the best way to use the slide move in the game ? I realized I barely use it, but sometimes see opponents using it in the kill cam. Maybe they were showing off, since it didn't seem relevant then.

Makes me sad that this is the first experience of Titanfall for a lot of PS4 players. They'll never experience the greatness that is TF1, instead they'll have to enjoy a severely gimped version of it.

Game is garbage and that's sad

Really don't want to reply to posts like these, but really? REALLY? It's "garbage" as in super terrible than the 70 percent of games out there? That's some crazy hyperbole.

Now that I've played the game, I can at least call anyone who says the game is garbage completely bonkers.

The negativity here is unreal.

Same. It's like people parrot whatever other people are saying just because it's the cool thing to do. I'm guessing if another group of people comes in here and says the game is good, some will chime in and say the same. Mind, not saying this for TF2, but in general when browsing game impression threads. Or maybe, whichever group's opinion comes in and settles first?

What I find the most ironic and funny thing here (based on what I read) is people saying "I'm a hardcore TF fan, bruh! My statement is gospel when it comes to this game!" or "This is wrong, this is right Respawn should delay the game because I think so, and I'm pro at TF1" etc. is that where were you people when TF1 dropped its player base??

And don't say "just needed more content and it would have worked, brah!" logic since, didn't Respawn gave away all the DLC as a way to retain the player base? Yep, didn't work, which could mean that more maps, modes, etc. weren't just the problem.

People do know that the changes we're seeing now (not saying they're for the better) are stuff Respawn is doing most likely as a reaction to how fast TF1 dropped its players. right? Are they aiming for that Call of Duty crowd? Maybe, but can you blame them if millions of dollars are on the line? If pandering to the Call of Duty crowd means more sales, and more players sticking around, then that might be the solid business decision here.

I don't think Respawn devs woke up one day and thought, "Gee, let's change the core mechanics of our game to piss people off, that'd be fun, right?" I'm guessing they are doing that based on internal data or some other feedback metric.

I get the complaints, I really do. The maps aren't that good in my eyes, either. The grappling hook? Yeah, it should be standard to all classes. Bounty Hunt? Yeah, I think it's not that good since the whole "I need to stop shooting so I can deposit shit" breaks the flow of the action. But to call it garbage or comparing it to cancer (as someone did)? Nah, man. It's not like it's as bad as Brink (I still shudder when I remember paying full price for that turd). Do I think EA is in the wrong here that they're releasing it super close to BF1 and Infinite Warfare? Hell yes (and you can blame EA, not Respawn, for that). If Respawn changes everything back to how it was and it loses its player base super fast again, what then? Can they release a third one or will EA stop funding for it and tell them to just focus on their Star Wars game? Not to mention people will complain that "Omg! They're rehashing the same shit and calling it a sequel! Lame!" It's a case of damn if you do or damn if you don't, no?

Just find it funny that people complaining are most likely the same ones that abandoned the game, which necessitated the changes that they dislike. Reminds me of the time everyone hated on BF3 since it pandered to the Call of Duty crowd and how DICE sold out, game would flop since if people wanted CoD, they'd buy CoD, etc.

Anyway, carry on. :)

It's garbage compared to the bar set by the first game and completely bewildering that they have made so many wrong choices when designing TF2. In a vacuum the game is good, but it doesn't live in a vacuum.

Or they agree and share the same opinion - not much of a mystery, but you keep on fighting the good fight 'brah', lol.

That's a completely valid opinion as well, too. Just the hyperbole is a bit much. I kinda am scared to check the BF1 Beta impressions thread next week since the same thing is bound to happen. :)

I made a point earlier in the thread, but this video just helps back it up. Look how little information is on screen compared to TF2. The view in TF1 just feels so much better. Half the time in TF2 you're screen is so full of pieces of info that just clog up the screen and make everything seem cluttered. Simplicity is key.

That wasn't the HUD they used in the final release. It's even cleaner in that, as they pull everything into a corner of the screen.

Yeah, definitely agree there. TF2 HUD is a clusterfuck of info that overloads the player. Respawn did confirm they're scaling it back for the final release, though.

Played yesterday and that "New Wave" flashing in front of my screen is really, really annoying.

Seems zip lines are in TF2 as well. https://i.reddituploads.com/f410f8181a77464587331a7ca472bf1a?fit=max&h=1536&w=1536&

We are going to hear this shite until the game releases aren't we?

If TF1 was so amazing why the was the game a barren wasteland after a few weeks? Surely people would flock to the game and stick with it if it was so amazing

I just stopped the playing the tech test a few minutes ago and it was great fun. I will pick it up for sure

This bullshit of "severely gimped"is just fanboys annoyed that their cheap VCR like plastic box lost one more exclusive

Yeah you got us, it's all part of the console warz.

You'll last long here.

You honestly think the negativity is down to a console war? o_0

It wasn't.

Not completely but there are already comments like "pity the PS4 players get their first experience with this gimped version"

This type of thinking from a tech test kind of points only one way. There is no indication from this test that Titan fall 2 is worse or gimped than its predecessor

Righttt, the large amount of us that are playing this tech test on our ps4s after playing the original on xb1 are clearly just salty about a lost exclusive. Busted

Yeah I hate it because its no longer on Xbox only even though I played the original on PC, makes sense.

And yeah I feel sorry for people who's first intro to the TF world is this tech test, PS4 or otherwise.

If we ignore the consensus, sure.

Just check out the Titanfall subreddit after the Technical Test release. It wasn't the announcement of Titanfall 2 being on PS4 that flooded their threads with negative opinions, btw, to address your first point.

Says someone who never played the original ignoring the thoughts of those that did...

I don't pity them. Though I kinda wished they played so they could understand the complaints from the veterans. This game is already pretty polarising, and it's not even out yet

Now that I have tried it for the second time, I just can't get into it. Loved TF1, this is nothing like it, maybe the maps are bad or the game modes. Seems like people who haven't played TF1 enjoy it, but for me, I am out. Second biggest disappointment after No Man's Sky this year. :(

Lol GTFO with this blaming "console warz" nonsense.

The consensus is that the TF2 tech test is generic compared to the original and comes off like "CoD with Mechs". Since it sounds like you never played TF1 it's impossible for you to understand this fact from first hand knowledge.

TF2 in its current form is OK. Its not "horrible". But to my eyes - and seemingly to the majority of people who loved the first game - it has lost some (arguably most) of the magic of what made TF1 MP special. This isn't some console wars bullshit. Lol (I have multiple PS4s, Xbones and gaming PCs in various rooms in my household). Respawn very clearly flattened the learning/bell curve to try to appeal to the wider CoD target audience.

Making the DLC free a year after release though isn't much good to anyone, I should know I bought the season pass at the time for the first game when the game first released. Unfortunately a lot of folk had moved on by then. Free from the start would have more than likely kept more people interested.

Tried this again yesterday and still can't believe how much they messed this up. Don't think any small change to TTK and movement speed will fix it, the Titan gameplay, modes and map design are awful.

That's to prevent people from camping in the tree I think.

The idea is good behind it but as I said before if you have to put out of bounds in the middle of a map do you not think to yourself "maybe we shouldn't have trees as they don't work here and remove or replace it". Like you said the out of bounds stuff just seems lazy as hell

Yes console wars are the reason for this negativity. People like myself, born stellar, Collingwood and others posting here completely faked our hype for titanfall 2 knowing it was coming to ps4 for the past 2 years.

And there's plenty of indication it's been gimped respawn themselves have even admitted in so many words in their tech test responses.

Cmon man you're not for real are you?

Read the comments in this thread and it is completely.
.

You honestly need help if you truly believe this. The only person that seems to be in a "war" is you.

Multiple people here have clearly stated why they feel Titanfall 2 is disappointing with multiple gameplay examples. To completely ignore all of these posts and state that people just want to defend a console exclusive on "an underpowered VCR" as if you are the one that's using logic is amazing.

No fan of Titanfall 1 hoped that Titanfall 2 would fail just because it's playable on PS4 too. That's stupid.

Played some of the Tech test today, then went on a rant at my friend who LOVED the first game, and was the one who edged me over to the Xbox One after buying a PS4. He completely agreed with what I had to say. And it's a major disappointment for both of us.

So, I cancelled my preorder. Can't believe I'm not buying a Titanfall sequel. Crossed fingers for a delay, but I got Gears and BF1. Don't need a subpar Titanfall sequel to go with it. Hoping for a delay and rework, release it in March or something.

Why are you guys so sure about them not being able to delay it because of the Mtn Dew Promo?
Its not like the Codes wont work anymore in February.

I don't think they will delay it for a few hundred online dissenters. There are lots of people playing and enjoying the game and they are taking into account the feedback they feel is constructive. I'm sure it'll be ready for October.

Sure there are many people enjoying it, but are they buying this instead of BF1 and CoD?
Most of the TF Fanbase is pissed off and isn't preordering this game.
Our squad still plays TF1 every sunday and I am the only one of all of them who is still preordering the sequel after this techtest.

I think the game is good, but I am absolutely sure it will be slaughtered sales wise if they stick to this date and this makes me very sad.

I know nothing about game development but the state the current game is in would a 6 month delay even do it?

They need to fix the movement, redesign (or scrap & remake) all the maps by the looks of things and fix Titans and make them actually useful again among other small tweaks.

With fixing the movement, they're gonna have to do it for the campaign aswell for consistency sake, and who knows what the campaign is like. I guess they could just toss it out no matter how it turns out to be but if the level design is anything like these multiplayer maps then I can't imagine it being very fun so I'd expect some changes there, too.

As sad as it is I don't think the game at it's core was designed to be like Titanfall 1 at all and trying to turn it into Titanfall 1 is just going to hit the game with a looooooong delay or make the situation even worse, would they really delay the game when by the time they fix it up they could be halfway through Titanfall 3 already? I don't think so personally.

The folks I play with are getting both. I think even with this backlash the impact won't be substantial enough to completely scrub the release date. EA must have its reasons for releasing them together.

Theres zero chance this game will be delayed this late in the day. Games only ever get delayed if there are serious issues (And even then...) not just because a bunch of us played a demo and didn't like it.

The hope will be that we are a small minority but i think they may find that the bad word of mouth and practically every previous fan cancelling pre orders may mean we probably are the majority.

Some changes to this game would be quick fixes in terms of dev time, such as adding shields to titans, changing their speed/player speed etc. But maps, they take time to make and play test and refine, let alone this all having to work in the single player.

I think the interviews are quite telling, it really looks like they used focus groups and research companies which is why they've gone in the direction they've gone in. To explain those a bit, focus groups are where generally an outside company hires a bunch of people (sometimes non games, sometimes gamers, sometimes fans, but generally gamers will be rather a loose term and you often find the quality of the focus groups are a poor representation eg. candy crush players are not gamers, they like candy crush and thats it) and get their feedback on the game.

It's all quite limited. Ask 100 people what they think of a game and you can easily get the wrong results compared to if you asked another group of 100 people.

The research companies are also hit and miss, some will be random people who made a company, others with some sort of backgrounds but not necessarily game design. They basically just give their feedback on what they like eg. the UI is too big, i was confused by the speed, i kept getting shot and didn't know why. The issue here again is most of these people are not gamers or good at games and are only briefly looking over the game without understanding it.

All the interviews point to this, saying players were confused by the speed (were they?) that they didn't know where they was being shot from (i think all would agree these new maps make it harder to know that) and the whole simplification for a game that really wasn't complicated all point to these sorts of groups and reviews changing the course of the game.

You see it in films too and it often results in either a bad product or a flat one. Sometimes these things can be good, its all too easy to become too involved in your game and they can point stuff out you either got used to or didn't realise but generally they just make a product bland rather than letting it be bold, different and standing out. Being proud of what it is and pushing for it, which is what the original TF was like.

The fact they changed so many things within a week to appease the fans is also telling as they know they've goofed up otherwise you'd stand by your convictions. It won't be delayed, it won't be a great game (sadly) and what will probably happen is they'll try to make it more like TF but without totally changing what is already there giving a half way house mish mash.
