Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

Just one simple question, why do the titans feel so weak in the regard that you can't really stay in them nearly as long as you could in 1? In one if you were smart you could stand and bang almost all match. This one seems like the only way to stay in one is if you hide and stay far away from engaging.

Are you using the new battery mechanics? If not then expect a swift ejection sequence.

After playing a few hours last night still not loving it the speed up of pilots and titan movement helped a little and the newer map is better than the other two but still there is no flow to wall run etc. I repeatedly get caught on level design stuff like rubble when trying to wall run then slide and jump back to a wall run. It just doesn't make sense, I'm so sad its one of the only games I thought would be a sure hit couldn't mess it up. Guess I'll go play Nioh beta for the rest of the weekend. And is it me or the titans die even faster this weekend? They play a bit faster but I'm in it for a battle for 1 or 2 titans and suddenly its telling me to eject. And no I'm not shitty with titans I do plenty of damage take out one then its like nope time to eject.

Which is a stupid way of getting people to work together because I've never actually seen anyone do it. No one is bothered to help their Titans by giving them batteries. Just bring back rechargeable shields. It's not that hard.

I don't understand some of their decisions sometimes. Instead of fixing the problems with TF1, they broke everything good about it and added even more dumb stuff.

At this point, they might as well just scrap all the T2 maps and just use the T1 maps for this game and I think most people would rather have that. I don't care if they weren't built for the grappling hook. I don't need the grappling hook, I need what I grew to love in the first game, and that was the movement system and that just doesn't show in TF2.

It'd be nice to have a few more areas on the maps that help us keep the momentum going, and a tweak to getting in and out of your Titan. I dont know if going back to first person is the answer, but I feel like the current animation is too slow and kinda breaks the rhythm of the game.

My guess right now would be the team (or majority of it) that made Titanfall is making the Star Wars game and a team made up of all the new staff (which includes some CoD Devs) have been left with Titanfall 2.

Only logical explanation for this travesty.

Grab a battery and get back in your Titan. Boom.. Shielded. The system is s cool way to get pilots to interact with each other's Titans and their own. You want a rehash of the first game but these new ideas aren't as bad as people are saying.

There's a team at Respawn working on a Star Wars game? Say what? They would rather have them working on a brand new title instead of an insanely successful title that they almost did perfectly?

I officially blame EA for this game, unless there is something else I'm missing.

Thoughts from a guy who was a 50g10 with ~120 hrs in TF1, for the (probably small)amount that's worth

-Really like the grappling hook (now). Hated it for the first few hours. Was hoping for something snappier and it felt swimmy initially. The movement thing becomes almost a non issue once you've got the grappling hook sorted out. However, I can't imagine not having it, so maybe it should be standard and not a perk.

-"out of map" spots in the middle of levels are kind of unforgivable. In a game promoting mobility, you're going to end up in those spots. Just invisible wall it or something, but it can't be in the release build.

-really did not like the battery mechanic initially. And to the guy's comments above, Titans seemed a lot less durable. Once you realize you need to pop out and find a battery when your Titans health is low, it makes things easier. Related: I hope the Titan nuke perk is still in. That seems like it might make some people think a bit more about charging in on titans.

-movement in general is really well balanced (again, didn't think so at all at first. Running felt too slow). Snipers can still smile, but I don't feel like I die to them often enough that the slowdown is an issue. Last night alone, I had kills similar to almost every kill that's in that sizzle reel. Grappling kick a guy, sliding, hook around a corner through a window. They all felt amazing. Definitely took time to get used to.

-they need to let you map the amped or ticks button somewhere else. feels weird aiming a tick throw and hitting right or left or whatever on the d pad.

-like the weapon spread right now, and assuming there are 2-3 times as many (we know there are three times as many Titans), I'm good with the variety.

-bounty is a weird mode. I like it, but the higher performing team can often lose just based on forgetting to deposit shit (at least I did). Getting killed with $600 on you because you didn't realize the bank was open doesn't feel great.

-I think leveling and weapon progression is better this time around. I feel like I'm earning unlocks more consistently.

Overall, I really like what I've played on xbone. Kind of seems to be a circle jerk of hate in this thread, some of it I get, some not. I'll be in on day one on PC for sure. Hope they take some of the feedback to heart so you guys like it too. Need that Gaf network to be strong!

Battery as it work right now is dumb.

Titan spawn without shiel -> battery get stolen -> get battery back in Titan -> now has shield. Make sense.

Did any of the changes they talked about make it in?

Yep. https://forums.titanfall.com/en-us/...alpha-tech-test-weekend-2-patch-update-x1-ps4

Once you realize you need to pop out and find a battery when your Titans health is low, it makes things easier

That's another dumb thing. When your titan's health is low now you need to look for a battery on the battlefield instead of retreating for a couple of seconds for the regen shield to recharge.

But that is much unneeded work. First you have to get out of your Titan and find another Titan. You have to try and not get killed by that Titan. Then you have to jump on him and steal his battery. So now he knows you're there. So now you have to manage to escape. And this is all considering someone hasn't already killed your Titan. AI Titans are much easier to kill than player Titans. So you're really actually hurting yourself because by the time you get back to your Titan, someone will probably have already damaged it a ton and getting the battery didn't help.

It may not be as bad as people say, but it is by no means better than just having rechargeable shields.

Played a few rounds yesterday and it's so incredibly different to the first game. This went from my most anticipated game of the fall season to questioning if I should cancel my pre-order. Going to hang onto it for now since I will get the game for $50 CAD with tax and shipping compared to over $90 without the current discount I have applied. But even then, it doesn't seem worth it at that price, the multiplayer is just so stripped down compared to the first game, it's generic and boring. Really feels like a completely different game with crappy maps to boot.

I never said it was better. But if you adapt your play style it is functional and gets pretty crazy in the more hectic battles. I think it beats the hide and seek sheiks resoawn of tf1 in my opinion.

Yes, it was announced just before this past E3 that Respawn is working on a Star Wars game.

I think the Titans are just right. I mean, if I was a Pilot, I wouldn't want a Titan friggin' dominating the entire match, no? At the same time, when I'm a Titan, I try to call mine in whenever a teammate does so I don't get cornered by enemy Titans.

If you constantly pick up batteries, your Titan can essentially last the entire match, which has happened to me a few times. :D

Rodeo-ing Pilots are not that hard to counter as well. If they jump in in your line of sight (which some do for some stupid reason), just melee and they're dead. Once the "Rodeo" sign pops, I either jump out and kill the battery stealer or just use the electric smoke.

I think it's a good balance wherein the Titans don't dominate too much, and the Pilots aren't super OP against them. Charge Rifle against a Bounty Titan is awesome though. It takes what? Like 4-5 solid hits and then you'll be able to call in your own Titan?

Speaking of, what do Titan levels do? Ion for me is at level 20. I assume there's more abilities to unlock? More skins?

Did any of the changes they talked about make it in?

Some but not all. I really wanted to see what UI changes they're implementing.

Hook: Completely agree on this. It should be standard on all classes. And not sure if Respawn did anything, but I find it easier to mantle objects with the hook now compared to last week.

Battery: Yep. same with me. I was super irritated at how wafer-like my Titans were and how easy they were getting decimated. Once I understood the battery system, it's kinda easy now to dominate with a Titan. That said, Respawn really should have taught people that or something, no?

Amped: What's weird is, you can't press it while walking/running? Not sure, but I seem to remember not being able to do turn on my amped boost whenever I was doing something else.

Bounty: Agree as well. I've lost matches for my team simply due to me being a dunderhead and not depositing $600+ :( I just hate that I have to take a break from the action to deposit something. I can't wait for the full game so I can play some normal Titan+Pilot TDM. xD

So dumb. Just let Dice and Respawn do what they do best and get someone new to work on this stuff.
I never said it was better. But if you adapt your play style it is functional and gets pretty crazy in the more hectic battles. I think it beats the hide and seek sheiks resoawn of tf1 in my opinion.
I'd rather have the simplicity of the old system than this battery stuff. As of now, Titan survivability is very low because most people probably don't even know about this battery stuff and it feels insanely hard to steal a battery from a Titan, telling him you're there and still manage to escape with your life.

And again, this is all saying that someone hasn't already killed your Titan in AI mode.

I have not had the chance of playing it, but from what I saw(youtube). It is really confusing the choices they made comparing it to TF1. I can definitely see where the negativity comes from.

I loved TF1, it was just missing loads of content.

I played it more yesterday and I actually enjoyed it quite a lot. It's not as good as TF1, Attrition in a customized titan and pilot is something special, this is not even close. Nevertheless, it was really fun.

Do we know how many titans will be in the final game? Do we have any data on weapons, the number of maps, etc?

I think it's too early to pass judgement on the game, I really believe it may work better with full content, the amount of options offered in the alpha test is far too limited to pass final judgement...

Some quick thoughts:

I think there should be a perk to decide whether we want to pull out the battery or just destroy it by shooting at it. It would keep titan pilots on their heels, because they would never know whether it's better to stay inside the titan and attempt to kill the pilot running away with the battery or to exit it and kill the pilot who's shooting at the core.
Moreover, is it me or you can actually heal your titan with new batteries? I've noticed that when a titan is "dying" and on timer, inserting a battery can significantly prolong the process, therefore the mechanic is really cool and can be used tactically. It's coming from a person who really likes how rodeos are handled in TF1.

The new map is far better than Homestead, they really need to show us that Homestead is not the norm.

I think both titans available in the beta are cool, Ion with extra boost perk is a really effective killing machine. Still, Respawn need to show us new titans. I don't understand why they took away the ability to customize almost everything, like in TF1, but with enough variety it can still work.

First person animations (entering a titan, etc) were REALLY cool, why change that? At least give us an option.

At this point Titanfall 2 needs an open beta with almost full content to show people how the full game works. I hope it's going to be better.

I'm going to be honest, once this game starts clicking it's really damn fun. There's some gripes, mostly stuff that just breaks the flow of combat (like the Titan battery system), but in the past two matches I've grappled behind guys to snap their necks, roundhouse-kicked three guys in the face without breaking my stride and sniped a fuckton of dudes with my Titan's precision laser. I can almost hear their anguished cries as I snipe them from across the map, it's glorious.

Pretty much my thoughts.

This is one of my matches from last night. It's basically 90% Titan action and you could see how having to get off my Titan and Re-entering for picking up a battery breaks the flow of combat.

PAUSE.

Everybody wait, I need to get out of my 50 foot tall battle mech to pick up a battery refill.

Probably because you're not putting a battery in first by letting your ai Titan distract another Titan and getting out and grabbing a battery when your Titan shields start to go down.

It takes some planning and skill to keep the Titan powered up, you don't jsut get regenerating shields for free anymore. I guess some people don't like that.

Its more exciting/challenging/skillful than finding somewhere to hide so your shields regenerate... The complaints about this game are so dumb.

Everyone's bandwagoning onto hating the game acting like they were such big fans of the first. Who was talking about titanfall 1 on this board before!?!??!

I made a rttp thread about it a year or so ago and got like 12 replies. Now its like every member of this site played it until last week religiously.

With the amount of people who don't use mics and just want to Rambo, the titan battery mechanic is going to fall apart real quick at retail release. I don't feel it promotes team play correctly.

Go check the community thread. Also check my post history. I repeatedly call Titanfall the best multiplayer shooter of all time at almost every opportunity.

My guess right now would be the team (or majority of it) that made Titanfall is making the Star Wars game and a team made up of all the new staff (which includes some CoD Devs) have been left with Titanfall 2.

Only logical explanation for this travesty.

More logical explanation.

They fucked up. Just as Treyach did with BlackOps 3 and Rockstar did with GTA4.

Just because developer X made amazing, super smartly designed game Y doesn't mean they're infallible to not make decisions that undermine so many stuff that was great from their previous works for various reasons.

Eg. grappling hooks on-paper sounds like a fucking cool thing to include with TF2. In play? Given the sacrifices made to map design, etc that were made to enhance the utility of the grappling hook, pretty much every other part of the traversal design got diluted.

Lol! I like it over having to wait in a corner to regen HP, but they could make it flow with the gameplay a little better. It feels like watching a cutscene at the moment.

I am loving the fact that Titans come so much faster, but the new map is just trash - I am sorry Respawn. Tried to like it, but it just doesn't work. Half the time I am running around without action.

That said, it's still fun dominating the whole match with one Titan.

Really? Not posting on this site means you weren't a big fan? Some of us might not have even had a GAF account back then, like me. You act like no one has a logical reason for their complaints.

And it seems like you're just mad that no one replied your thread :/

More challenging doesn't always mean better btw.

Didn't play Titanfall 1. Tried this today. Team Deathmatch is fucking shit. Shot by sniper. Shot in back. Shot by sniper. Shot by guy in corner. etc etc Hard point is ok and was kinda fun because I felt like I was actually doing something. Taking objectives. Calling in Titans. No complaints about the movement or shooting. That area feels good.

Thanks. :)

Oopsi! Wrong link! Here's the correct one where Respawn made all DLC free: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/titanfall-dlc-is-free-forever-on-xbox-one-pc-xbox-/1100-6425905/

I think the content and gameplay goes hand-in-hand. Otherwise, does that mean the core gameplay wasn't enough for players to play it until the expansion comes out? Or was it good enough but the content itself was sparse?

Again, just musing here, but if you're Respawn, you can't just gamble on "hey, let's add more stuff and see if the players stick around longer" since they are spending a ton of EA's money. While I don't approve of everything they've in regards to Titanfall 2, it's not as terrible as people make it out to be, and them changing a few things is in response to the player base drop, which no one can blame them for.

That's a good point -- and one I hope every developer/publisher ponders on.

Highly doubt the game is going to get delayed unless something technical gets broken and whatnot. If you check social media and various channels, most of the response has been positive. Granted, could this be due to PlayStation gamers' first time with the franchise and hence not knowing the "good" Titanfall game? Maybe, maybe not. But if a lot of PS4 players buy it (and seeing as the platform leads the installed base for video games by a super wide margin), then Respawn will be alright. At this point, if they're banking on that, I wouldn't blame them.

Still think this shouldn't be released near BF1, though. What a shit thing for EA to do; I don't care if this is there way of covering their bases when it comes FPS', it's unfair to both games and the people that work at them.

Wut? Titan Fall came out in March 2014. They made the DLC free in March 2015 an entire year later, after the release of other good, content heavy first person shooter- after many people left due to lack of content, that was amplified fragmentaion due to paid DLC. That wasn't an effort to get people to stay. That was an effort to get people to come back.

To answer your question, the base gameplay was VERY well recieved, but there was not enough content to keep people coming back. This is a very competitive landscape. Look at destiny and Halo5- both games similarly derided for their lack of content, both championed for core gameplay. But both had progressions schemes that dangled the carrot stick, and frequent content drops. Halo went a step further and released all their content for free so as to never fragment the base.

If Respawn wanted to make changes to the gameplay in order to keep people from leaving, they should have changed things that people didn't like, or build upon things that were did like. this is a perfect example of throwing the baby out with the bath water. They DO need to be blamed for that.

People loved the parkour friendly maps, they loved the quick and seemless locomotion, they loved that pilots could stand up to Titans, they loved the Unflinching first person presentation, they loved that Titans were an anti-kill streak. So changing those things in response to a population fall off is dumb.

Building on what was well recieved isn't a gamble. The gamble is changing everything that even made people interested in a sequel.

The third person entering animation is really jarring because you still pilot the Titan in first person.

First -> Third -> First

Complaints are totally valid, and your assertion those of us complaining didn't play the first is nonsense. I know for a fact most of the posters complaining sunk a lot of time into the first one, because some are on my friends list and also posted a lot in the OTs. But hey your thread got ignored so that must mean we're all lying ... LOL.

It's hilarious how positive this thread is in comparison to /r/Titanfall

Up for some games? Maybe a sliver of fun can be had with TitanfallGAF

As a huge fan of Titanfall 1 (still one of my favorite shooters of all time), I'm disappointed here. The Titans don't feel good, bottom line. Little glass houses that don't deal damage quickly enough and are WAY TOO FUCKING FRAGILE. We need shields. We need faster Titan acquisition. We need BETTER titans. Scorch and Ion are downright bad. They don't feel powerful bros. I'm sorry, I really want to like this game but these are things I'm not going to overlook.

So it looks like I'll be skipping this game as of now, and that hurts as someone who went to Generation 10 in Titanfall one.

Respawn, you guys aren't going to attract a larger audience with this one. It's going to be smaller, because all the old fans won't buy this shit, and all your new customers will be playing Battlefield and COD.

Delay this game and fix its many problems. PLEASE.

And he says all the people that hate this test are people that never played the first one...

Yet I find that the majority of the people that like it are people who never played the first one 🤔

Agreed. Everything should be in first person. No reason to have to switch over all of a sudden.
Yeah. Totally agreed. Even though that's low on this game's list of issues, it's still jarring and weird. It felt really immersive getting into a Titan in first person. Who the hell made all these decisions? That God Of War guy? :P

I love God Of War

But that is much unneeded work. First you have to get out of your Titan and find another Titan. You have to try and not get killed by that Titan. Then you have to jump on him and steal his battery. It may not be as bad as people say, but it is by no means better than just having rechargeable shields.

After a bit, they get strewn about the map, so you can find one a bit easier, but I agree. It's an added element that the game didn't need. After reading the Final Days of Titan write-up by Geoff, they looked at this battery system in the original and decided wasn't fun until they went with shields. For sure me reason, they decided to second guess themselves and put this in. Yeah, it's possible to grab them and get back, I've done it with success, but it's not fun.

I want to take down Titans and fuck shit up with my Titan, not hunt down batteries to keep mine up. It really ruins the Titan game for me and it breaks the experience and keeps you from doing what you actually want to do. Not to mention that a quarter of the time, my Titan is half-destroyed or on its way by the time I get back. It's just not fun. At all

I think someone gave me a battery once. To make this mechanic work you need to incentivize it better.
