Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

I want to like this game but I just can't. I'm not enjoying any part of what I've played. The maps are so bad and, again (broken record time), the game feels so lifeless after the first. I was so excited for this but this test has disappointed me greatly. I wish Respawn the best of luck and maybe after a handful of patches it'll become better but I won't get my hopes up. There's no way I'm buying this game anymore and it pains me to say that.

The most nonsensible part is if your titan initially gets it battery stolen, then you kill the pilot and get it back, it benefits you via giving the overshield.

Like...I just got the same battery back. Why wasn't that already happening? It makes no consistent ingame sense.

If only titans had regen shields and batteries were instead tied to core meter or something.

Like, imagine if batteries = core power and someone stole your shit when it was at like 90%. Then they get killed and suddenly there's a 90% core power battery lying on the ground that everyone can see, so the match turns into a no holds barred blitzkrieg to capture that battery and slam it into a friendly hole for a near-instant super move.

but nah

If you have a battery and you hop into your Titan, do you get the buff?

Yes.

One thing I HATE is when a doofus teammate is riding a titan's back while Im frantically trying to feed the Titan a battery. So wish I could insert a battery anyway.

Also, I love hipfiring. In nearly every game, you are forced to ADS, and it sucks, especially for a fast game like this. Hipfire should be viable

I'm sure that sounds great in your head, but that sounds bad to me. Why would I bother risking death to steal some core charge?

Yeah i wonder why Respawn thought this was a good idea. With the speed it takes to deplete a shield, the devs may have well just kept them in. Sure there could have been another way to promote teamwork. Maybe it has something to do with the campaign.

I think you get core fast enough as-is though being able to disable it would be neat.

I still think it makes the most sense that the battery is tied to an actual shield system, so the rodeo to remove the battery totally saps the shields until they can get another.

is it worse than batteries magically giving you a shield when you recover one, despite it doing absolutely jack shit to begin with

like what were they thinking. there's no flavor or thematic sense to it at all. If batteries were recontextualized as "core generators" or something it would be a lot more intuitive imo

I'm sure that sounds great in your head, but that sounds bad to me. Why would I bother risking death to steal some core charge?

Because 1. damaging the enemy titan is good 2. depriving them of a core super that will almost certainly fuck one of your titans is also good and 3. building core for your titans with which to fuck enemy titans is very good

Can you see your latency? Haven't found an option, some enemies seem really laggy
Looks like you can only see your own ping on the main menu, haven't noticed it in-game. Seems like something that would be in the final game but you never know given how many changes there's been since the first game.

I have to say, whatever new server stuff they are using is great. I'm getting roughly 20-25ms less ping than I was in Titanfall 1.

Removing a battery IMO should disable an element of the titan, gaining a battery should restore that or if the titan already has a battery, maybe tops up it's core or resets cooldowns.

I would be more open to how the battery system works if it didn't flat out replace classic rodeo.

Yeah, I want it to be more punishing actually.

I also find it a bit weird the doom state is still a totally functional titan. Like I can still do my super laser in that phase.

Maybe they should give Titans the option to shake a rodeoing player off.

The Titan stays stationary, and the player gets thrown off of the Titan 3 seconds after activation if they don't jump off.

I think both the battery and classic rodeo could coexist with a system like that.

Also, yeah, Titans should spawn with a shield. If you have a non-dead battery in your Titan you should have a shield.

I think both the battery (as an aside: Titans with a battery should have a shield, including Titans that spawn in), and classic rodeo, could be balanced by a system like that.

Smoke needs to be a default option or on a timer. Without smoke, it's a pain in the ass to get someone of your Titan.

The practice part only shows you how to move and shoot. So when playing the game, I had no idea what was going on. But it was fast and smooth so I like it.

Before the wild suggestion, what's the balancing issue do you think?

Imo Pilots can't with to titans.

That's what I hated about it. It didn't have anything to teach new players about Titans or old players about the new changes, like the battery rodeo.

A replacement for the grenade through the hull system which removes some of the dynamacy of the Titan/Pilot combat.

And making stealing a Titan battery an active choice. If I'm going to get an indicator telling a Titan where I am and to kill me I want to make sure that I actually want the battery, and can decide not to take it.

Played a few games now and it's pretty good. The best moments are fighting in your titan. Pilot vs Pilot gameplay seems kinda lacking, the maps don't give you as many options as in the first game in terms of movement. Didn't like one single map I played. Graphically it's great, but the HUD is a mess imo, nothing is explained, so I just go ham in my titan without keeping track of abilities and the like

I'll probably get it on launch, but I'll try the BF 1 and Cod betas first. 3 FPS games in a month is too much

See I think the battery concept COULD be good, but I wish (common theme here) they had used it to improve the old system, rather than replace it.

Rodeo used to be a 1 step process, and now it's a 3 step process. This means that pilots are more an annoyance to a competent Titan rather than a threat. I understand that they wanted to push teamwork, but I feel like they've neutered the 'David and Goliath' dynamic from TF1.

I'd rather all Titans had health and an overshield. If a pilot steals a battery, that Titan loses all of their health, and has only the Shield to keep them from being doomed. Once the shield goes, death is imminent.

a rodeo pilot can choose to take the battery, or deplete it by shooting it. Larger Mechs would have batteries that take longer to destroy, but they'd also provide more health to a friendly Titan.

The amount of health that can be restored from a battery would be directly proportional to how much HP the Titan had remaining.

I think this would stream line the process, still allow for plenty of strategy, and empower pilots more.

I've yet to see a pro twitch streamer spawn in a titan, they all seem to call it down manually, sometimes spawning in a titan is extremely useful.

It's strange that Titanfall 1 had a really in depth tutorial on both pilot movement and combat as well as Titan movement and combat.

Titanfall 2 has the gauntlet. That's it. The gauntlet. So it's effectively useless for new players and teaches none of the new stuff to old players. No way known the original Titanfall team made this. No fucking way.

I've decided the rodeo'ng is so stupid now. Titan pilot just counts down x number of seconds, turns around and blasts the Pilot when he's forced off. Not only does he have the orange outline, but he has the green KILL ME on his back.

I've only seen one smart pilot call his own Titan down after being forced off, having it land on the pursuing Titan, but that was still somewhat lucky.

Honestly... All Respawn needs to do (and can do without any delays) is make it so jumping off the Titan is manual.

Take a battery = Pulling off the hull
Throwing a 'nade = Shooting the Titan

The only real difference between R1 and R2 is that the Pilot has to keep re-engaging the Titan, which is almost impossible to do against a non-distracted Titan.

Then improve the Titan's ability to fuck up Pilots. Why are the primaries so damn useless? The only weapon im R1 that couldn't do so was the Railgun one (name unsure).

And finally, I want Anti-Titan weapons to be able to royally fuck up a Titan's health if I get a Critical hit.

I'm sure Respawn already items on making Titans already have shields at first, and pulling a battery removes it. I am 100% sure they are just being silent and this is already in their later builds. God knows why.

But forcing Pilots to jump off is terrible.

I don't have a problem with the smoke system. You get one only if you kill a Pilot? Meh, so be it.

R1 and R2, I live a long time in my Titans. They aren't as good, but Titan combat is honestly the very least of R2's problems.

Casual Pilots ain't doing shit to a Titan.

To be fair it's a tech test I have to imagine the real tutorial has more to do.

Titanfall 2 has an even more in depth tutorial . It's called a singleplayer campaign. I'd imagine the gauntlet is just part of a level if the little chatty man is anything to go by

New to TF.

Seems just okay. Nothing bad per say, but nothing great either.

From what I've read on this thread and others it seems like TF1 influenced BLOP3. I don't know how true that is but to me and my two hours of game play, this plays exactly the same as BLOP3 except with Mechs, grunts and shitty sights.

I'll keep trying it out and see if my opinion changes.

I barely played TF1 but Blops 3 is definitely way slower than this.
