DRM in general is anti-consumer, why do I need steam to play most games? Why do you have zero balls and let Valve and other publishers get away with it?

Because they wanted MONEY. That's all the fallout was about. They wanted more money for their work and Activision didn't want to pay so they went to court to get paid and moved on.

If Activision had paid up, Titanfall would be a Call of Duty game.

Yes...we did hate Steam when it launched. EA had almost a decade to learn from the mistakes of early Steam, and still made many of the same mistakes.
 
Forgive my ignorance since I've never used Origin, but wasn't the big complaint against it the fact that it was basically spyware? Or did that all get fixed?

Read y edit and those terms generally suffice. Valve controls those keys they hold your games ransom and they proven this fact before. Generally the less competition a product has the more audacious a company is. We're already starting to see this. Precisely what happens when a company with an iron gripe hold starts to leverage that fact. It isn't pretty.

They hold your games ransom when they change the EULA, I repeat not even Origin does this.
 
Yep, knew this was coming, confirming that I won't buy it.

EA is well within their rights to make it Origin-only, but I refuse to support it

Steams DRM is far less intrusive as Origin. For starters, Valve doesn't ban you for forum posts. Origin does.

But hey keep thinking you can't choose the lesser of two evils.
 
that's a lost sale from me!

the less drm organizing software in my system the better (i have 6 free origin games i still haven't activated cause of my EA boycott!)
 
Not as much of a problem to me now as it used to be.

I hate EA and would rather use Steam, yeah, but not enough that I'm gonna deny myself a game I really wanna play because of it.

All I need from Origin is controller support sso I can just launch it straight from BPM.

Origin too, though. I don't need to launch Origin to play my The Witcher 2 copy I got from there, just boot the game, the launcher will come up and I can play, no Origin required.

Origin is good enough for me. I actually like its interface better and the way it updates. It lacks the sales and big picture mode of steam but it's good. Now Uplay and gamefly...,those are soft peices of shit.

I've always been a wait-and-see type of person, especially (x999) with multiplayer games.

I find buying Day 1 is an invitation to get burned, frustrated, and waste a bunch of time trying to connect when servers are getting toasted.

All games should be DRM free. That's the absolute best for consumers. Why are people willing to accept one but condemning those that accept the other?

They don't restrict the keys but they end up on their store which they have control over. That's still a monopoly, regardless how you twist it.

And yet if they decided to change the EULA you decline you can't access your games I wonder why.

i'm not saying the valve is perfect and unimpeachable in their conduct

but the idea that we need competition from EA to save us from the evils of gabe newell is so hilariously stupid i find it hard to believe that even gaffers are spouting it

I'd rather games not be tied to any distribution platform. Valve is almost as bad as EA about that. The main difference is I actually like their distribution platform, so it's a little less grating. Still terrible for posterity, though.
 
No issue at all with me, I don't mind Origin one bit and with the recent "close Origin when you exit an Origin game" option its even better. Set it up so it starts up in the background when you start your Origin game, then it exits Origin in the background when you close the game

Its basically a download manager again if you want it to be.

What does that have to do with the Origin application? All of those games use a browser for MP, don't they? Seems like you're ignorant to what Origin really is.

EA never had a chance to learn from the mistakes of Steam because they didn't build Steam. The only way Steam has gotten to the point its at now is through a decade of iteration. Thats the only way to build an online marketplace of that caliber. EA just wasn't the company to build it. If they were, they would have.

EA is trying to provide a solution to a problem thats already been solved for most people. Why do they want to solve it? Because theres a lot of control that comes from being a steward of a platform like that. But a platform like that only becomes more than the sum of its parts under a very specific set of circumstances. Mostly its right place, right time followed by year after year of iteration. Origin will never be anything more than it is now. Maybe I'm cynical but I think it to be true. Its just another initiative that will eventually peter out over time. People forget just how far Steam has come. Its taken a decade of service to build up the amount of trust people have in their service. And the majority of that ultra-goodwill has only come about in the last 3 or 4 years. Thats why this sucks. Its a restrictive system that exists to allow EA to exert more control over its customers- but it offers no benefits while doing so.

To be honest I kind of doubt EA even considers Steam their competition. Digital Distribution is just the way things are now. And everyone from the smallest indie dev to the largest corporations are rolling their own solutions. Its just that some suck more than others.
 
Not shocking news. At all.

If someone is a lost sale just because it's Origin, then it's a loss for the customer, not them.

It's called competition and prevention of a monopoly. Seriously. It's not difficult. What do you lose by EA's competition, more incentive for Valve to do better and the odd game requiring the installation of Origin (The horror).

Monopoly is rarely a good thing for consumers it leads to stagnation and in the worst case a great ramp up in anti consumer practices. Is the slight convenience really worth that?
