Runtime of 113 minutes and official synopsis:

The anticipated new feature from renowned filmmaker Terrence Malick (Tree of Life, The New World), TO THE WONDER boldly and lyrically explores the complexities of love in all its forms. Parisian single mother Marina (Olga Kurylenko) and Midwestern tourist Neil (Ben Affleck) fall madly in love in France and relocate to Oklahoma with Marina’s young daughter to start a life together. As their relationship wanes and her visa nears expiration, Marina makes the acquaintance of a priest and fellow exile (Javier Bardem) who is struggling with his faith, while Neil renews a relationship with his childhood sweetheart, Jane (Rachel McAdams)

Roger Ebert's final review:

Why must a film explain everything? Why must every motivation be spelled out? Aren't many films fundamentally the same film, with only the specifics changed? Aren't many of them telling the same story? Seeking perfection, we see what our dreams and hopes might look like. We realize they come as a gift through no power of our own, and if we lose them, isn't that almost worse than never having had them in the first place?

There will be many who find "To the Wonder" elusive and too effervescent. They'll be dissatisfied by a film that would rather evoke than supply. I understand that, and I think Terrence Malick does, too. But here he has attempted to reach more deeply than that: to reach beneath the surface, and find the soul in need.

I'm pretty fond of the movie, I don't quite get the hate towards it. If you like Malick, I think you'll be happy. I'd give it a B+, whereas the rest of his films are A or above for me. I'm working on a big piece on it now that I'll share here.

Is this going to get a full wide release, or will I be stuck with VOD?

Only ten minutes? :(

See the theatrical roll-out above. I doubt it would go wider than that.

I was quite happy to publish this piece today, taking a look at how all of Terrence Malick's films have influenced his latest work:

Another one dissecting To the Wonder coming tomorrow!

i didn't really connect with this one when i saw it. it was still worth it just for the malick + lubezki visuals on the big screen, though, they make southern usa look like paradise.

Finally saw it. I was underwhelmed. It was absolutely beautiful, but it didn't land with me the way Tree of Life did. I think it may have simply been that the wordless scenes of adolescence evoked more out of my past than the desolation of marriage since I've never experienced that.

I think it was a critical mistake not to have Ben Affleck speak or really, present any sort of characterization whatsoever. It was an interesting choice and I understand why Malick might have done it, but I think it hurt the pathos of the film.

It's not really fair to say that it's his worst film, because it still evokes feelings from images that most directors could never even dream of, but I still felt like it was his least effective film. Malick's films are sort of like getting on a emotional narrative wave and going where it takes you, but I was less interested and connected to the story than in any of his earlier films.

Interested in seeing what people think of this. It was the worst film I saw at TIFF last year and I can't bring myself to watch it ever again. Then again I'd never consider myself a Malick fan but for those that are I think they will enjoy it.

I think Tree of Life set some mighty high expectations though. I agree that the emotional highs of ToL aren't there, and this is most certainly a weaker film, but it's better than 99% of the stuff out there. How many directors can complety hold your attention with only 10 lines of dialogue?

Just tried to buy it off US iTunes but it just won't let me :|

Hope this is up on UK iTunes in the next few days

This is the worst. I hate when this happens.

It's going to happen with Upstream Color too. I'll be able to buy it digitally before the bluray, and I'm not going to want to wait, so I'm going to buy it twice and never use the digital one again.

These services are crap, they need to be more progressive. I should be able to pay once for the bluray, and have instant access to the digital one the second it's available anywhere.

To The Sonic

Just finished watching this. Not really a fan of Malick in general, though I like The Thin Red Line a lot. Didn't like this at all. Some decent moments but the whole thing felt really hollow.

Watched it and loved it. Going to bed now. One question though. Anyone else notice it had the same beats that are more commonly found in ballet? The soundtrack was where I first noticed it but the more the movie went on I realized I might be right.

I'm bumping this, demanding someone tell me how to buy this in the UK. The bluray isn't out for two months here, that is some bullshit.

Saw it last summer. Unless it's been recut since then, it's a really weird movie. I didn't really think it was worth my time, personally, and I have a lot of love for Malick.

I love The Thin Red Line, but I've never liked his other works(though I didn't see Tree of Life, New World was awful).

The premise sounds neat though.

How is it weird?

Good question. I was going to say 'insufferably pretentious', but I wanted to give Malick the benefit of the doubt. I'll just concede that it wasn't really for me. It's a pretty movie, though..wish it wasn't so directorially self-indulgent.

Good, now i'm waiting for StuBurns' opinion, then i'll probably bite.

I didn't know it was a new release, fiance was watching it yesterday via TWC On Demand. "Insufferably pretentious" is a spot-on description of the movie.

Also, the primary question by the end of the movie is "why was I supposed to care about every character (besides Javier Bardem) in this movie?"
