Tom Warren: "This is an Xbox" slogan will make more sense soon

My guess is an announcement at TGA of a formerly Xbox exclusive franchise having its next game be a Day 1 release on PS5. For those of us who keep up, this won't be a surprise. To your average gamer, it'll be a...

Despite the avalanche of jokes, I think the new marketing has been a success. It gets the message across. Sounds like its timed to lead into an announcement. All pretty logical.
What's that messaging?

That there is no need to buy Xbox and having a PlayStation will give you access to both Xbox and Playstation games?

MS has been harping on a similar message for like 5 years at least. Ever since they started Day 1 PC releases + talking about cloud streaming they have said in one way or another that Xbox is a "brand" not a single machine and downplaying selling hardware (although they obviously still care, and never said they didn't despite what people always repeat.)

It's not like the slogan is confusing Tom, it's just really bad marketing lol

my unrealistic hope is the announcement of an official Xbox One translation layer build into Windows 11.
where if your PC is above a certain minimum system requirement you'll be able to play Xbox One games semi-natively on it.
and if your PC is above an even higher minimum spec you can play One X versions of games, or enable FPS boost if available.

in addition to that, the announcement that every game going forward will be Xbox Play Anywhere, on Windows and Xbox consoles.

That there is no need to buy Xbox
That has been clear for some time. I've never seen a company sabotage their own product so much. At least Sega stumbled into killing the Saturn trying to rush to the US market ahead of the PlayStation. MS is actively promoting other people's products.

I am not against MS having an Xbox branded PC. I wanted it years ago because I believe they could help developers hit targeted performance for an Xbox line of PCs. However, trying to make everything an Xbox is going too far in my opinion. It just adds more mud to the muddy waters.

Fuck's sake.

The problem isn't that it doesn't make sense. Nobody's in suspense here or wondering "ooooh, what do they have up their sleeve?!"

The problem is that it's another bad marketing campaign that makes Xbox look like they're continuing to grasp at straws, on top of the absolute void of quality content they've been delivering for years.

To be fair, Tom is easily confused

That's the craziest part here. They had already cut their marketing budget. Now they are using that cut-down marketing budget to run ads that their games can be played on other consoles :D

They should. Xbox literally referred to a box (shaped X at that time). If it's not a hardware console box, it should not have 'box' in it.
Oh I had forgotten about the X shaped Xbox. I wish we lived in a world were X shapes, spheres and triangles were the de facto form factor.

This.

Phil killed xbox and that fucker will walk away with millions of dollars for failing.

Although for old times sake maybe we can get Phil to say "we hear you and we've got to do better." For old times sake.

Somehow the current gen has been worse for xbox than last gen.

Btw its already happening. I can play Cyberpunk and bg3 from my library without an xbox just through xcloud gaming on the steamdeck. Saves transfer and everything.
Curious if ms can expand this without much pushback from publishers.

To the fact they are going to have OEMs making devices that play Xbox games.

they already do. it's called a PC lol.

but for real, PC compatibility is technically absolutely doable, at least for Xbox One titles and everything the Xbox One can play.
these are games designed around an X86 system using Direct X11 and Direct X12... so, like Windows 10/11 games.

and this would instantly make millions of machines that people already own exactly that... and OEM Xbox

But these will be in a Xbox mode

But these will be in a Xbox mode

also doable on current Windows.

they already added a console like guide menu that is specifically optimised for controllers.

they could go one step further and make it so that as soon as you hold down the guide button on your Xbox controller, it switches into Xbox mode, disables most background services that aren't needed, and brings up an Xbox-like home menu.

Real smart of them to do a cryptic marketing campaign that questions the value of their hardware during peak holiday shopping season

Maybe its a release of an Xbox/Lean Windows OS? Or Xbox app finally has a big picture mode equivalent? That would be fire.

They will start the next gen

xbox OS
OEM manufacture
reference specification
you can install xbox OS on any PC
RTX 5090 ''xbox''
handheld Rog, Legion etc xbox edition

The failure will be Homeric.
Guys stop making hardware, become a third party, don't try to put one foot on the ground and the other in the water.

Seen more advertising lately than I have for years - they were hammering PC Game Pass ads during the NFL this weekend, must have been pricey. Good to see them ramping up.

Funny to see the cartwheels people are doing in this thread to convince each other it's too late (it's never too late). Was playing Dragon Age on my Samsung TV through Xcloud earlier - worked perfectly. My TV is definitely an Xbox :messenger_tears_of_joy:

They need to get an Apple TV app out the door.

Gestridens strikes again!!!

OEM Xboxes

Though if he's referring to what I think he's referring to...seems quite soon for that no? Eh, maybe MS are further along with streamlining than I thought they'd be.

Announcement coming at PlayStation's 30th anniversary showcase in December?

run no GIF

Let's hope not. SIE don't screw up the good optics you've got ATM, please.

Is my lunchbox going to be an Xbox too???

No, friend. That was a Gamecube ;)

tbh, we all know Microsoft is going the software route, nothing surprise here.
Xbox will just be a "side" hardware for them.

I think he is really just trying to distract people from the fact that Xbox Series consoles is getting murdered right now at a time when they should be selling well.
