Tomb Raider has gone gold! Hits nearly 800 fan art submissions.

Best laugh I've gotten in awhile, TR had good gameplay?!. Fucking worst playing game series ever...apart from Guardian of Light. Do you miss your lock-on-side-flipping-dual-pistol-wielding-tittysaurus?

Thank you for this insightful post. You've done a very good job analyzing the core gameplay mechanics of this series.
I will bookmark your post for future reference.

I think it's the one you posted; "Lara's Misfortune". Unless I find a better one, I'm going with this.

I'm doing the OT, hopefully the first few pages aren't just people quoting my avatar.

The hell you are. You're going to do nothing you hear me? I'm doing the OT, I think I earned it.

You and Tricky need to stay away for a good long while.

We've seen a lot more than just that. We've also seen the beginning of the game
, which has been modified to include a small puzzle involving setting explosives on fire with a pulley system. We've seen all of what happens after that, where she finds the bow, kills the deer, fends off wolves, finds the makeshift, nearly gets raped, kills dudes through burning buildings, goes to the wolf den, gets the climbing axe, goes through an entire army of guys to the top of a radio tower.
Through this roughly two hours of footage we've seen almost nothing that could be called a tomb, no skillful platforming; just very basic traversal, scripted sequences, and way too much combat with a very poorly told narrative as the main focus.

What about "I've watched almost every piece of media" didn't you understand? They're slowly building her up as a character. Of course she isn't going to be raiding tombs at the beginning of the game. She's supposed to have just become a "tomb raider" by the end of it. That's why this is called an origins story.

I really dont understand why Tomb Raider threads on GAF have turned into such shit. I hope someone who isnt a complete twat is doing the OT, we don't need another Colonial Marines OT.

It's easy to understand why. Just look at the recurrent "this game is shit I'm not interest but really not interested and I repeat it you know this game is shit" posters. Well, at least it's not a "protect this and that" meme spamming like it was before. The OPs are usually better, because only people who are playing the game discuss it, but you never know with some users and their obsession, they have so much free time that they will probably shit the thread talking about the game they're not playing. Or maybe they'll buy a copy and open a LTTP thread just one week later (since it's fine with the mods) because they feel their opinion is so important and better than everybody else.

They aren't slowly building her up at all. She's an expert at traversal and combat as soon as she gets going. Just because she cries during the cutscenes doesn't mean much.

If it's another 'shit mountain' OT, I'd rather not even step foot into it.

Huh? No, it's nothing like that. What I meant was that I hope the thread doesn't devolve into "oh it looks terrible", "no it doesn't!" back and forth. The official thread is completely neutral. Diamond did some art for it, and it looks really nice. I'm really looking forward to the game.

Seeing all the footage out of order with bits and pieces missing inbetween is bound to create a wrong impression. While I do agree that they seem to have too much combat to early on in there, I think the transition will appear much more natural when actually playing the game.

Oh ok, my apologies :P

I think that's what it will eventually end up as, though, unfortunately.

Lara's Misfortune sounds pretty negative, though. Not only does it provoke Uncharted comparisons but it also sounds like the whole reboot is bad for Lara.

I always wonder who changed the titles to Tomb Clancy :lol but still, regardless of how I feel about the game, OT shitting shouldn't be encouraged
despite my contribution to the Aliens thread

He destroyed 5/5 LANTERNS DESTROYED: LANTERNS DESTROYED.

I always thought Lara was kind of being a cunt there.

Please don't, just waste your energy worrying about others disliking things you like. Don't want to exhaust all your resources.

I'm sure the game will have its moments, but my problem with it (and many many AAA games) is that it's potentially not all it could have been. It's been made with a large audience in mind, apparently that automatically means that it has to be cinematic and it has to be accessible. Players can't ever get lost; minimum input is rewarded with maximum returns. There has to be some depth, but not too much! Don't want to confuse your demographic.

Basically: they don't respect their audience. These games could be so much better if they just let players figure stuff out for themselves, but of course this would mean lower sales so it'll never happen. I really don't think developers should think like this. They didn't used to think like this and games sold just fine. The dumbing down of AAA games is a very real thing and it's becoming all too prevalent, the scary thing is: I don't see it stopping.

But they showed the footage in order...

The first footage was at E3 a while back showing Lara waking up in the tomb and escaping from quicktime rapists. Actually I misremembered this. They did not add that puzzle, it was present in the E3 2011 demo as well.

Then we saw the footage of after that at comic con from after she escapes the tomb to the burning village.

Then IGN had their 60 minute walkthrough showing from the burning village to the top of the radio tower.

Comic Con 2012 demo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHB-gjrwzRM
IGN 60 Minute demo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9i_U9y4BWI

That's pretty much the entire beginning of the game with very few breaks if any. It is extremely unlikely that they are hiding tombs and platforming in there.

But i have lots of energy, because thanks to you i now realized that the series i liked was shit! With your great examples and critical thinking you have convinced me that i was living a lie!!!What am i gonna do now??

There is platforming in there and there are hidden tombs. But you're right, there aren't any story tombs in there which was my point from the beginning. They won't have any meaningful tombs so early on in the game's story because it would be too early for Lara to already go tomb raiding. If she did that right at the start there wouldn't be any need for an origins story.

And what I was also talking about was that there are scenes missing inbetween her first human kill and the next combat encounters. So it's possible that the transition is a little smoother than it appears to be.

That first video is what they refer to as a story tomb. In the IGN video they said that the demo starts right after her first human kill and getting the gun. She goes from zero to Rambo in nothing flat.

As a lifelong fan of Tomb Raider games I hope this ends up being awesome.
I don't have time to play it right now though maybe I'll pick it up later if it ends up being great.

Everyone hated Other M and it got torn apart online. If I hadn't picked it up for myself I would have missed out on what became my favorite game for the Wii.

Looking back now that it's gone gold, I can't believe they announced this game so early.
It feels like it's been in development for a long time.

There is at least one cutscene missing, though. And they skipped Lara scaling that cliff because of the crash.

I'm interested in seeing how this turns out. I'll buy it if it's good. I'm not married to the classic Tomb Raider formula. If it's like Uncharted, good! I love Uncharted. Let's not pretend they didn't borrow liberally from TR.

That said, the pre-release vibe around NeoGAF has been downright toxic. At this point, many people will not give the finished game a chance or evaluate it on it's own merit. It could turn out to be legitimately bad. I guess we'll see how it sells.

Lately, almost all games are selling below expectations so if the game underperforms, do we blame the direction they took the series or do we blame the depressed videogame market right now? I know many will immediately point to the former.

I could be eloquent. I could be respectful. I could be cautious in my expectations or take a measured approach but......fuck that.

I like the premise. I love the graphics. I love the expanded combat. Everything about the one hour play through looked baller as fuck.

I am ready. CHOO CHOO! Day 1.

He said all we missed was her climbing a ladder. What cutscene are you talking about? They said the demo began right after she got the gun.

I read a preview where they said it was a bit of a climb...but I might be mixing things up. We'll see.

We've seen parts of a cutscene that takes place after her first kill where she's attacked by another enemy with a gun and she has to kill him, as well. That cutscene didn't show up in the IGN demo.
