Tomb Raider has gone gold! Hits nearly 800 fan art submissions.

True. But while long time TR fans dislike this game for good reasons it doesn't mean it's a bad game.

Actually, most long-time TR fans I know (including me) don't dislike it. Sure, not all of them love it and a lot are skeptical. But most are at least open to the idea of a reboot and are willing to give it a try. The TR community's certainly far away from an outcry á la DmC.

I think I played the demo on the PSN, but I'm open to giving it a second shot.
Highly recommended, and you don't need to play it co-op to have fun, as the puzzles actually change between solo and co-op.

Its very combat focused, but the 3/4 top down view makes it more playful and arcadey than the main games have ever managed. Lots of small puzzles and secrets to find, and some OK lootstuffs and replayability. Also looks gorgeous running on PC at 60fps.

Hell, might have to jump back into it for a bit.

You realize Uncharted initially copied Tomb Raider, right?

No. It didn't

True. But while long time TR fans dislike this game for good reasons it doesn't mean it's a bad game.

Yeah the shitty no-skill platforming, hand-holdy nonsense cinematic set piece QTE gameplay, and ridiculous story which says Lara is new to all this killing and needs protection and then immediately turns her into a sociopath serial killer makes it a bad game.

Everything else is just gravy.

That's only because like half of the Tomb Raider community is focused more on what Lara's wearing and how pretty she is than what's happening while you move the sticks and press buttons. If the fans were even half as hardcore as the fighting game-esque community of DMC, you better believe there'd be an outcry on that level.

Definitely play it, and try the co-op if possible. Fun as hell.

I've seen enough to know it will be different, which I can certainly live with, GoL was great after all. I've seen enough to know it will copy a bunch of elements from other games that have been bugging me more and more as the generation has grown old, which I don't yet know if I can live with. I've seen enough of the gameplay to know this thing looks like it will be a ludonarrative dissonance factory, but I'm certain I can turn my brain off if needbe.

I don't expect to be able to be impartial, and no one who has actually read anything I've posted would believe otherwise anyway. There's a good chance though that I'll cruise through the ride in relative peace and be able to analyze whatever impression is left afterwards. My priority in communicating my impressions however is to be honest first and kind second.

Nope. It's because the past three games have been so disappointing to us classic TR fans that we had already given up on ever getting a true TR game, anyway. And this looks like a fun experience with a great story which is more than I can say of Underworld or Anniversary. This reboot is a welcome change from what Crystal has been doing so far even if it doesn't go back to the roots gameplay-wise. It literally can't get worse than Underworld.

I have said many times in the past that this may turn out as a great game for the people who enjoy cinematic games and shooters and have no prior connection with the series.

But the problem is it has Tomb Raider on the cover and it pretends to be something that it isn't.If they called it Memoirs of a Raider or something they could have avoided the comparisons and then we could've judged it as a new IP.

I don't even understand this. I can pretty much guarantee that Anniversary and parts of Underworld will be more classic Tomb Raider than literally anything in Tomb Reboot. So because you gave up on the series, you're returning and happy that the next game in the series barely looks like part of the series? Help me understand.

The last TR that really deserved the name was Angel of Darkness (yes, it had lots of bugs and was unfinished but at least the gameplay and level design were true to the TR brand). None of the games Crystal Dynamics has developed was a true TR game and so I'm just happy to see that they seem to be finally making a great game with the TR name on it once again (instead of the boring, generic, awfully written crap that Underworld was) even if it's not true to the classics.

But i have lots of energy, because thanks to you i now realized that the series i liked was shit! With your great examples and critical thinking you have convinced me that i was living a lie!!!What am i gonna do now??

Great you bookmarked me didn't you, damn it!

I'm saying that I've given up on hoping for a proper TR game and that Anniversary and Underworld were not just bad TR games but bad/boring games in general. So I'm happy that they've started from scratch and won't have to deal with the aftermath of Underworld's horrible story and I think the new game will be a great experience. Sure, it's not going to be a classic TR game but it'll at least be a fun game in general. And the optional tombs and puzzles I've seen so far do look great and better than anything in Underworld or Legend (some of the puzzles in Anniversary were somewhat decent) so it's not like this won't have any of the classic TR elements in it. It's a reboot and I'm willing to accept what that means. Not to mention that I love what they're doing with Lara's character. Giving her more depth and making her relevant again.

Well, I can appreciate that point of view certainly, I don't really agree but I see where you're coming from.

I really don't forsee this having a better story than the other CD titles though. That's just wishful thinking.

Well, resignation to the inevitable is certainly one way to approach this. I'll be interested in seeing how you enjoy it.

What about the footage looks good? We've seen everything from Lara waking up on the island to the Tomb Raider logo. The traversal is extremely basic and scripted and there's an overemphasis on combat and story. It looks like they basically took everything that was wrong with their game design, dialed it up to 11, and got rid of the remaining vestiges of Tomb Raider.

I'm sure there are plenty. There's never a shortage of people ready to buy the next dumbed down game that they've already played 40 times this gen.

Wow, holy fucking elitist batman. I love how you look down upon anyone who doesn't share your views. Yes how dare anyone like this game, what a bunch of idiots! I bet you'll be in the OT calling anyone who bought and liked it idiots, right?

People who pre-ordered: What pre-order DLC are you getting?

I'm getting Nordic Edition with Shanty Town map, challenge tomb and climbing skills along with combat strike pack.

Well I guess this is where I'll disagree, because if you call the previous trilogy boring or generic as if this new game is some kind of fresh take on the genre....well IDK, we're seeing things differently.

Screw the haters! I'm really looking forward to this game, it looks great.

And yes I had the Tomb Raider games on PS1, it's not the same, but it looks like a fantastic action/adventure game none the less.

I'd like to be proven wrong with this game, but I really don't expect to be. The marketing lost what would have been my blind day-one preorder. We'll see what the reviews (and not the "professional" ones) say.

True. But while long time TR fans dislike this game for good reasons it doesn't mean it's a bad game.

My complaints on this game have all been about the game itself since I really don't care about the Tomb Raider IP. As I've said before I don't care if they wanted to change it with a reboot, but why change it into the same generic shooter we've all played so many times this gen? The whole "grab everything that's been in most successful AAA games and hope it all works out" design is tired, and quite frankly lazy. I can't wait to get XP for throwing a pickax through someone's skull and level up and pick some overpowered skill that makes the game too easy and boring to play. Then I'll craft some ultra special item that lets me run through an army of bullets and go hunt some deer with detective vision on.

This doesn't makes any sense.

It does. See, this game might not be a true TR game but it's probably going to be a great game. Underworld and Anniversary were not just no true TR games but also bad and boring games in general.

It looks like they basically took everything that was wrong with their game design, dialed it up to 11, and got rid of the remaining vestiges of Tomb Raider.

Some of the traversal is scripted but I've played the game at Gamescom and apart from those semi-cutscenes the actual traversal seems pretty good. I didn't encounter any invisible walls in the hub I played in (the deer hub). Everything that looked climbable was climbable and players are given more control over Lara's jumps. All of which are improvements compared to Underworld. Now the question is how challenging the level design will be when it comes to platforming. We can't really answer that without having completed the game.

I'll agree that there's too much combat. But so long as the combat doesn't dominate (so far I'm under the impression that it'll be an even split of one third combat, one third platforming, one third exploration and puzzle solving) I'm fine. It does certainly look a lot better than the combat in previous TR games.

And I'm a bit of a sucker for good stories so I don't mind the game having an emphasis on storytelling so long as the story is good. But I get why it might annoy others.

It does. See, this game might not be a true TR game but it's probably going to be a great game.

Then they should have made it a new IP and called it something else.

Underworld and Anniversary were not just no true TR games but also bad and boring games in general.

They were both terrible TR games but at least they showed signs of CD actually trying to get the basics right with each new release.I actually think they had made some progress especially in level design with a few levels in Underworld.
However with this new game it's like they have said "fuck it" lets tick every box possible and lets try to fool the old fans into thinking that this is Tomb Raider.

Even if i was in Derrick's position and had no prior connection with the series i would still probably hate it because from what they have shown there's not even a trace of originality in this game.
What's the point in rebooting something if you're not able to bring something new to the table?

A game doesn't have to be original to be fun, a game doesn't have to be original to be good and a game doesn't have to be original to be successful. In fact, I'm pretty sure that you can count this generation's AAA games that actually brought something significantly new to the table off on one hand. The only ones I can think of right now are Mirror's Edge and Heavy Rain (but I'm sure there's a few more that I haven't played).

I hope this game bombs so fucking hard it leaves a smoking crater...

I don't know how I feel about the game.
Interested in the reviews, as it feels like a lot of people are already decided on how they see the game on both sides (and fair enough, there's probably enough content out there to judge it, I haven't see much apart from the E3 demo).

A game doesn't have to be original to be fun, a game doesn't have to be original to be good and a game doesn't have to be original to be successful.
I agree with this entirely. Hell, Sleeping Dogs is one of the most derivative games I've played in years and its still a good time. Same with Darksiders, and the same with a lot of things.

What matters to me is the disconnect between the series and the gameplay. If you're serving me up a roast beef sandwich, don't call it a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on the menu and then act surprised when I spit it out.

I feel kind of bad for being interested in this game that departs so drastically from what OG fans are used to. I don't like the older Tomb Raider games at all but I sure feel the older fan's pain when it comes to somewhat unwanted reboots to favorite franchises (OG DMC fan here who wasn't fond of it being rebooted).

New Lara is really cute though.

Preordered from GMG back when it was around $30. Hoping this will be good, especially after how disappointing Uncharted 3 was (compared to 2 at least).

A game doesn't have to be original to be fun,

Yes and no.
A game which is a copycat of other tried and true recipes could still be fun but not for long. It's the fresh ideas and the risks that make core gamers coming back for more since they would not be able to find those ideas anywhere else.
Of course being original is not enough which brings us to...

a game doesn't have to be original to be good

Exactly. It also needs to be good. But being good is an addition to originality not a substitute.

and a game doesn't have to be original to be successful.

Probably.I don't really care if it's successful or not.My only obligation to a game company is to buy their game and their only obligation is for their product to satisfy my needs as a gamer.

I agree but i don't see how this situation should be an excuse for not even trying.A reboot at the very least brings an opportunity to try new things or make a honest return to the roots of a franchise and bring back the core elements with improvements that don't dilute their strengths but instead expand on them.

What this new game does is look at what other games are successful today and forcefully bring their elements under the "Tomb Raider" umbrella regardless if those elements are in conflict with what the title stands for.

I can't wait to give this game an honest go of it.

Then come back here and shit all over it.

Just kidding, I will probably like the game a lot

Nowadays all the title really stands for is "action-adventure with Lara Croft uncovering ancient myths". And that's still in there. I also find it kind of weird that you criticise the reboot for not bringing anything new to the table and then criticise the stuff that is new. Sure, not new to gaming in general but new to the franchise. I don't think we'll come to an agreement without having played the entire game, though. We'll have to wait and see how big and explorable the hubs end ub being and how challenging the puzzles and platforming will be. Without knowing that all we can do is speculate.

YES! So freaking excited!

Kinda glad I bailed out on doing the OT. Why bother going to all that trouble just to have the usuals bitter suspects shit it up. Seriously, some of you guys need to ease up in Tomb Raider threads, its getting ridiculous now to the point of it being borderline trolling. Eh, whatever – I’m super excited and counting down the days. Can’t wait for the positive reviews and good sales to roll in.....the rage will be entertaining to see. This will be the game to make Lara Croft relevant again. Don't like the new direction the series is going in? Then piss off. Tomb Raider is no longer for you.

Tricky, we were wondering where you were!

That last bit though, that won't make many happy. Lara's Misfortune should be for everyone, new to the series or diehard lover!

What's worse, "trolling" or coming off as a SE employee in some of these threads?
