Tomb Raider |OT| Lara's Misfortune

Is there a trick to spotting the Ghost hunter collectables...I have 5 camps now and looking at the stats for each, there's actually 40 of them...I found only 1 lol...last night before going forward I went back to a few area's,now that I have new stuff and discovered quite a few things I had missed but those damn ghost I can't seem to find for the life of me...

They show up in instinct mode. I'm not sure if you need a survival upgrade to see them, but that's the only way I think.

They don't appear on the map.

Bro, just stop. Games gonna game. All that story they're shoving in your face? Don't criticize it because it doesn't matter. Hmm? There's a cutscene every 15 minutes? Pfft, whatever, worry about how the games FEELS. If it's FUN. Don't worry about all those cutscenes even though they're everywhere. What, hmm? Gameplay doesn't match the narrative tone? Don't worry bout that bro, this is a game, not a book. Games ain't worried about things like "tone." The atmosphere's amazing though, right? What, hmmm, huh? Pointless XP system and collectibles. But son, dem bars. Dem bars BE FILLING UP.

You don't get it, Lime. Let games be games, Go Read A Book™

Right. Like gaming narrative and overall performance of the actors and action hasn't evolved ever in games. Damn we've only really started in this industry as a legitimate alternate medium to watching Television and people are expecting Hamlet overnight.

Feels like only yesterday I was playing Black Tiger and Double Dragon at the corner deli.

I probably would, although UC2 was released 3 years ago and to some extent "innovated" large, scripted setpieces (well, at least made an influence on AAA third-person game design). Not saying it's a better game (I don't want to do the discussion on the differences between two games), but that it is perceived more favourably.

Then I accept your review score!

Yeah, fuck uncharted. And fuck ND for creating a great game. When they were developing UC2 they should've predicted everyone would copy them and cancelled it. Thanks for ruining TR and so many other great games.
And fuck sony just because.

Yeah, even the more subtle scene they ended up going with telegraphs basically the same thing. They just made him a bit less of a creeper.

I honestly don't even think the scene change was necessary. I wonder if it was changed to reflect the "rape" controversy thing. Just another thing for people to complain about I suppose.

Iirc, one is hidden very sneakily under
a small wooden bridge in the second half of the zone.
That one took me forever!

I managed to find almost all on my own, but I had to resort to the ign guide a couple times for the really well hidden ones :3

Yup that one was tough. I've been running around using Instinct mode and I'm still having trouble. Lol.

When examples of great writing and narratives are all around you but games decide to ape the worst of them, I think harsh criticism is warented. If Tomb Raider was trying to do something completely unique using video game storytelling in a way only games could do, fine, cut it some slack. But since it's pretty much turned out to be LOST x Rambo, it's open season as far as I'm concerned. And with all the marketing being based on the narrative, and with a bunch of cutscene/dialogue work in there, you should expect more as well.

You can reminisce over Black Tiger and Double Dragon all day long, but I don't see the point since most of these AAA games are just as simplistic with a fresh set of paint slapped on.

Do you guys pick up all the collectibles as you go through the campaign or are you saving them for once you're done with the game? I'm doing them as I go and it's really slowing me down lol.

Still better than LOST though.

That's a good point, I do wonder if that backlash affected the development at all.

As for the scene, the original version paints Mathias as more desperate and Lara as having better instincts. The new one has slightly more tension though I suppose, because you're waiting for the other shoe to drop and it doesn't happen until the next scene. Either way it's resolved pretty quickly so the difference is negligible and I might prefer the scene that makes Lara appear smarter. You also wouldn't have the question of why Lara was even left alive.

Also, Tricky I think a lot of people owe you an apology for constantly putting you down for your hype and threads about the game. Especially some of the folks who are now posting in this thread about liking the game. C'mon guys, be the bigger person!

I'm trying to do it as I go. I really want to take my time and enjoy the game my first playthrough. I'm really liking it. So far.

There's a whole purity of gaming in those titles that you are totally oblivious to. Sorry about that, shame to be missing out on something like that. But that's off topic.

So all these great examples all around. How much are these games to cost? What's a good script worth these days? I, Mean if we're talking cream of the crop here like what your baseline obviously is. How much would Hollywood pay for a great script vs Eidos ? What's more gamble, a guaranteed Hollywood summer blockbuster or a product released into the minefield that the gaming industry is? Who's holding the bucks?

Figured I would pick this up for pc today, but looking at the steam page it doesn't look like it supports a gamepad? Is this really true? I have trouble playing with mouse and keyboard these days due to some injuries and really need my gamepad support. Can anyone confirm that I'm missing something?

Im picking them all up. The ones Im able to at least.

Im realling digging how the collectible icons have a little padlock on them if you are unable to obtain them yet (due to either not having the necessary equipment or story progression). This sorta thing would've helped the Arkham games a ton regarding the Riddler trophies.

Finished the game with 95% completion. I'll try to keep it relatively brief because honestly I've already mentioned most of the bad things with this game not only since it came out, but in the months prior to the game's release. If anything I was disappointed that nothing changed or was hidden from us from all the previews and videos shown.

Positives
- Game is pretty damn good looking on PC
- Length was more than long enough, think it was about 11 hours for me.
- The 2 hub areas in the game were pretty cool, too bad it represents about 10% of the overall game.

Negatives
- Another AAA game that spent years telling us how amazing and deep the story will be, and it ended up being so half assed and poorly done.

- Characters are stereotypical and not around enough to make me care about their well being.

- RPG elements were entirely useless and would not be missed at all if they were not in the game. AAA games really need to stop doing this if they can't do it right. XP, "crafting", skill trees that offer superficial upgrades at best.

- Game was stupid-easy on Hard and offered me no challenge. I died 3 times in combat in the entire game, once from me being careless and not paying attention.

- Too linear for the majority of the game and too focused on boring setpieces that look pretty but offer no gameplay options. Running from explosions and collapsing buildings with no fear of failure doesn't impress me, but then again neither did Transfomers in theater.

- The game is torture porn to the point of parody. We get it, Lara's tough and going through a lot. You don't have to make her fall through 4 platforms and smash into a tree every 20 minutes.

- Enemy AI is a joke and maybe the worst in recent memory in a AAA game. A lot of times they don't even bother trying to take cover and let you spray them with bullets. They don't flank or try any tactics short of spamming dynamite (reminds me of COD on veteran).

- The game is too automatic which makes the platforming and combat boring as hell (lack of enemy AI also helps there). The only thing I do is press the kill button in combat since cover and stealth are handled for me and for platforming I just press the jump button anywhere in the general area of the target and she'll grab it. I died 0 times in platforming.

Overall the game is exactly how I thought it would be since CD made it perfectly clear what they were trying to make and who they were trying to copy. While this wasn't a completely terrible game, it was a completely boring and mediocre one that did nothing new or even attempted anything new really. I give it a 4/10, the game is as average as a AAA game can be nowadays. I won't even remember anything about this game most likely when we get to our GOTY voting time in december.

Be honest, you many months ago did you write the bulk of that?

The sad thing about this game is I damn well could have and most of it wouldn't have to be changed. I was going to write it last night but I finished it around 2am so I just went to bed.

I disagree. I thought the AI was pretty good, when Lara is reloading you can even hear them scream" She is reloading, get her!" or something like that. It was a nice touch. They also take cover and tried to flank me a couple of times.

The only thing i really really did not like about this game was when Lara raged around while fighting. "I'm coming for you bastards!" and shit like that. That was so stupid.

Yeah I heard that a few times but no one ever popped out immediately. In fact a lot of times they said it I had reloaded about 15 seconds ago so it's a good thing for them that they didn't come after me right then. It wasn't like that moment in the last of us demo where the guy came after Joel after he heard the click from the gun from having no ammo.

Where are you seeing these padlock signs? Whenever I hit Select I just see a list of collectibles (i.e., 1/5 Relics, 0/10 Ghost Hunter), but there are no padlocks or anything...

I keep mulling over if I should bother trying this game out because everything I hear about it just seems the opposite of what I care about (and I like Uncharted, quite a bit, but a lot of that has to do with the dialogue). Having watched a few live streams, I can already tell the story and writing are pretty sub-par and all the comments in here just seem to reaffirm that. But even then I'd still be okay with blasting through a linear rollercoaster action game since I could get some semblance of enjoyment out of it (and miss out on what I care about having in the old Tomb Raider games-- slow methodical atmospheric platforming/adventuring).

- The game is torture porn to the point of parody. We get it, Lara's tough and going through a lot. You don't have to make her fall through 4 platforms and smash into a tree every 20 minutes.

But this is the thing keeping me the most from jumping on the game. Yes, it's probably over exaggerated in its presence, but it being so prominent just makes me feel disgusted and uncomfortable. I wrote off my interest in the game when I saw the spike-through-neck skewer gif when I just felt completely sickened by it. However, with the game having come out, I feel the itch for to at least trying this game coming back. The only real thing that seems to interest me is the desolate atmosphere of the island and the hub zones (though from what I've seen the exploration just seems incredibly shallow and pointless).

They're on top of the icons that you havent collected. You know how they are transparent when you havent collected them? There should be little padlocks on them (at least ones that are currently unobtainable). Make sure you dont have any X's next to your icons on the right side of the Map screen and you are able to see everything.

I make sure to 100% an area before I move on, the game is just that good. Now, obviously some areas you need to progress to get more gear and you have to come back but as soon as I have the gear I am back to collecting.

I just got to the Shanty Town last night. Game is freaking incredible.

It's quite hard to stop playing Tomb Raider. It's flying by and the game is paced beautifully, so you keep wanting to push on. Thankfully, I've had the day off.

I'm quite enjoying the story. I think in terms of the narrative, they've achieved what they were going for. The game feels like a pulpy, Indiana Jones-type adventure and also like an appropriate Lara Croft origin story. Job well done in both those respects, I reckon. It does what it says on the tin. I'm not sure what some people were expecting, really.

The way they incorporate the action, both into the story and Lara's progression as a character, is also done well.

It's definitely my favourite game in quite some time.

I do the same exact thing. I just got the rope arrows last night and made my way back to the Mountain Village to pillage. So fucking awesome. The base to the radio tower was really great too.

Why do you take the time to write all of this out when you made it abundantly clear from the get-go and throughout the thread how disappointed you were in the first place? Just gotta be heard somehow right? =P

I figured there were still some people in this thread who wanted to read something other than the impressions of people cumming over michael bay setpieces.

Do you know at what point your gear is fully upgraded and you can acquire all collectibles?

I chuckled when I came across the old Portugese ship stranded on the beach... well at least it is stranded on the beach and not in the middle of the island!
I laughed out loud when I came across the
Hidden research facility tomb near the beach.
That's when it really hit me.

You and I are moving along right around the same pace, I have put in about 8 hours so far and I don't think I am 50% done with the game yet.

I think the AI is on par with most third person shooters out there, from what I've played so far it didn't strike me as particularly bad. It didn't take it to the next level like The Last os Us seems to be doing but it wasn't worse than what I've come to expect from these types of games either.

All this loot collecting can become really tiresome. After spending the past few weeks smashing crates and looting bodies in DS3, I'm really getting tired of it by now.
I stand by what I said earlier. Hiding some weapon upgrades and making them rare and hard to find would be really rewarding and encourage exploration a lot more.
As it is you just smash these crates that are literally all over the place untill you have enough "salvage" to buy an upgrade.

Instead of giving you XP for everything and even using it to encourage brutal kills which are so out of character for Lara, solving the puzzles in the tombs should be the only way to get new skills. It would encourage players to crack them and make them put more effort into obtaining new skills. Also make them harder.

Even with these design flaws (and some others like terrible QTEs) I still think this is a great game that does a lot of things right and if they listen to the complaints people have with this one, they could create something truly great with the sequel.

Yep. I havent made it to the infamous Shantytown yet though and Ive wasted about an hour or so just staring at the screen in some instances.

I don't mind the salvage component, as it kinda makes sense that Lara would find random shit strewn about the island, and could use it to upgrade the gear she has. Killing deer and picking berries for XP though is pretty retarded.

Maybe they had some type of food/stamina system in place at one point during development that they removed and just replaced with added XP?
