This tends to happen to Newtypes because of plot reasons. Maybe they all are connected through the morphogenetic field.

A newtype is basically someone who has a psychic connection with Mobile Suit Units. As pilots they have better reflexes and intuition. They also get emotionally attached to each other really quickly.

Newtypes form intense bonds very quickly. It's a running theme in the franchise. They also tend to be emotionally unstable.
The archetypical newtypes, Amuro and Lalah, spoke like 3 words to each other. Didn't stop him from having an existential crisis when she died. Being a Newtype is suffering.
