True Pain?
It works because till now Naruto never got it's Shonen Hero defeats Big Bad moment. So a stereotypical villain works for this exact scenario.it works though because pain is a pretty cool villain

But it's the same reason why all the arcs after this one struggle so much.
It's a pretty common trope. See: WatchmenYou know, didn't Metal Gear basically have the same plot?
Gaara ended up being less of a Big Bad and more of an Anti-Villain, or Woobie, Destroyer of WorldsWhat are we defining as a Big Bad here? Because I would say Naruto defeating Gaara certainly counts.
1 and 2 were about being a super power and to extract revenge on the Patriots. Solid 1 was making the world Liquid's hostage, 2 was a test, 3 was an attempt to win the Cold War, 4 was self-preservation gone awry, Peace Walker is the closest thing you're thinking about, 5 is about what is not.You know, didn't Metal Gear basically have the same plot?
Part 1 of Naruto generally pulled it off, but this really is the first real big Naruto battle in Shippuden, if you think about it.What are we defining as a Big Bad here? Because I would say Naruto defeating Gaara certainly counts.
Hm, fair. Big Boss's scheme was like Pain's, but it went somewhere else after that.1 and 2 were about being a super power and to extract revenge on the Patriots. Solid 1 was making the world Liquid's hostage, 2 was a test, 3 was an attempt to win the Cold War, 4 was self-preservation gone awry, Peace Walker is the closest thing you're thinking about, 5 is about what is not.
Orchimaru was the reason villain of that arc though and his battle with the 3rd overshadowed Gaara by a decent amount. Especially since most people in the village didn't even know Gaara and Naruto fought then. What are we defining as a Big Bad here? Because I would say Naruto defeating Gaara certainly counts.
