i dislike FMA 03 once it departs from the manga and every time i think of writing about why that is i imagine it'll end up some thesis-length deep dive into Shou Aikawa's fucking trash fire body of work and then i decide it's not worth it

American anime fans are weird, so weird in fact that they have managed to make their hobby so repulsive that casual viewers don't want to be a part of it.

American anime fans like:
Edgy
Moral ambiguity
Non-lawful good characters
Muscles
Titties
"Romance" - (I hate romance subplots in 90% of anime)
Good animation

They're more hardcore counterparts (the average /a/ user) likes
Comedy
Slice of life
Cute things being cute
Good animation

Anime fans also generally tend to like what they liked when they were a kid.

Black Lagoon would've been more popular if Rock had muscles

But Dutch had muscles...and got manhandled by a maid.

From what I know, normal people in Japan also think anime and anime fans are so repulsive that anime largely isn't worth watching. So the creepiness just reinforces itself either way because studios need money and that's the crowd that pays.

a bunch of perverts used to read hentai in public, and had everybody else go "what the fuck" at them

You can find manga about almost anything (there's a manga about daytime stock trading!), so while yeah there's weird ass fanservice manga, there's also a lot of decent stuff for non-perverts to read. You can't really say the same thing about anime, not to the same level.

It's kind of amusing to see people in Japanese video games (set in modern Japan) poke fun at the character who 'watches anime'.

"Used to?" It's not unusual to find porn just straight up in the newspaper over there. I saw dudes reading that stuff on the train all the time when I was over there.

I refuse to acknowledge that 2004 was, in fact, a significantly long time ago now.

it's still sometimes weird to realize that we're nearly a fifth of the way through the 21st century and that it began a long time ago

I doubt anything'll change in the short term. Long term, as in years into the future? Maybe, but things will probably be pretty different by then anyway.

I figured, as most people are probably imagining the worst (i.e. Sony will only let Funimation license/dub certain titles for now on), but still really weird to hear.

.........oh god, what if this means Sony Pictures tries to make a live-action version of a Funimation property?

Funimation can't negotiate that, tho. They license the property from the original owners to dub it, they don't actually own the property.

Just wondering what this means in the long run for Toonami?

If Sony feels like FUNimation is wasting time airing shows on cable late at night and and forces FUNimation to cut deals short with Toonami/[AS], that would be a huge loss for Toonami as most of its block is supported by FUNimation.

Hopefully this just means nothing of real worth and its business as usual.

I'd say the worst case scenario as far as Toonami is concerned is maybe they don't get priority Broadcast dubs like they did with Attack on Titan Season 2.

I don't think any broadcast negotiations changes outside of that. Like, the network had to negotiate directly with Toei when it came to Dragon Ball and One Piece. So I doubt anything Kai or Super related changes.

The episode you're thinking of for Cowboy Bebop's "worst" episode is Boogie Woogie Fung Shui.

is there actually a bad episode of bebop? i don't think so

The absolute worst episode of Bebop (Boogie Woogie IMO) is merely average. But it's pretty freaking bad compared to the most of the rest of the episodes. That speaks way more towards Bebop's strength than anything, though.
