That's fair; I have an issue with the show focusing on more obscure villains. As a casual batman fan, it just irks me that we haven't seen the joker, penguin, poison ivy, etc yet.
I agree with you there at least for the stand alone episodes I'd rather have more iconic villains for those as it's hard to get excited for a one off random villain who we don't know and will never see again. I'd rather they save the big guns like Joker for a future major story arc, but the tier 1.5/2 characters like Poison Ivy, Bane, or Scarecrow would have done a much better job of getting people interested early on.
I do like the focus on the league of assassins and having more obscure characters like Shiva, Silver Monkey, etc as the first story arc though. It helps to establish Katana who seems like a far more enjoyable side kick to another version of Robin or Batgirl no offense to either of them. It's also nice because this is a story arc you wouldn't expect to see in a Batman cartoon, not this early at least if ever.
If there is a major positive to having Batman fighting obscure ass villains this early on it's that we're clearly seeing a Batman who's less experienced then what we normally see in various cartoons. Have him gain experience against these no names so that when you do introduce the bigger named villains Batman is also more competent and you can do more crazy stuff with the big name villains.
Also, I've been wondering what you think of Black Lagoon?
I'm curious about your thoughts on Lagoon as well Bass.
I really like Black Lagoon a lot, it's a very dark and mature show that tackles very dark and mature matter and does it well with an anime spin. I wasn't really shocked by the fact the kids were shaped by the child porn and snuff films they were forced to take part in as both kiddie porn and snuff films are a major thing on the black market as dark and depressing as that is. I also don't mind the more "anime" feel that we get from the twins because while Black Lagoon is more grounded in reality... it is still an anime. Obviously in real life two young teens would not be able to wield such massive weaponry and be such amazing assassins, but in anime it doesn't really stick out as much. Besides we've already had Roberta who basically acted like a human cyborg during her arc so it's not so out of the ordinary to show characters with abnormal strength or skills.
I assume everyone knows what a snuff film is, but in case you don't it's a film that depicts real murder. Honestly that's a bigger reason the twins became twisted more then the fact they were raped and forced to have sex with each other (both play a part though). Being forced to kill or be killed on camera probably helped to create the disillusion to the world we see them have during the various scenes. It's also probably where their love of gothic/vampire esque attire and personality comes from, being made to act a certain way while killing people and/or being raped.
It does make sense that some people are disturbed or turned off by these events to the point that they've stopped watching the series. These are disturbing topics that are uncomfortable to think about. We like to act like we're desensitized to violence from the tons of action and horror movies we've seen, but seeing a real person die in a graphic way would probably break most adults let alone children. It's a very fine line Black Lagoon walks too much one way or the other and it comes off as distasteful or overly disturbing just for audience shock value. I feel like Black Lagoon straddles this line very well, but it's clearly not going to be for everyone.
I'm probably 2/3rds of the way through GXP right now and don't think it's terrible. The show is extremely flawed; the audio mixing is poor, characters are bland, VO is bad, harem genre isn't generally my thing (HSotD being the exception) in general, etc. Still though, it has its moments that make me sit back and think 'Eh, this aint so bad'
That's what I thought at that point too...
