Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
Fun fact: This scene was only like two pages in the manga.
Oda wanted to include it, but he felt CP9's tale had gone too long so he reduced the backstory to just a few panels.

Gives all the fucks
This was TWO pages? Man, it sure doesn't feel like it.

Again, I blame the fact this is just such a long running series they have to adapt & it's hard for me to tolerate the pacing of anime that run 50+ episodes.

Yeah. This is a bad habit of Oda's. It's especially gotten bad once OP got huge. No editor is gonna second guess him, so he just gets to go on whatever adventure he wants.

This was a very very very short flashback in the manga. Toei just decided to devote the bulk of an episode to it.

This flashback was only two panels in the manga, bruh.

Not that this extended bit is bad. It doe its job in coveying how scary Lucci was when he was starting out.

I don't think they actually showed the flashback, they just had the vice admiral say "Lucci did X 15 years ago"

Oda's pages are filled with dialogue. They seriously contain at least 2x the dialogue of any other weekly series. It makes reading them take a real long time. He's quite a dense writer.

I meant this more as a general observation, not just about this specific flashback.

No, BatDan was saying this was intended to be two pages. It was only two panels (just text) in the final manga.

I see. I wasn't sure since I've only really seen the Straw Hats and a few other good ones as a frame of reference.

The Straw Hats are really just adventurers who claim to be pirates because it's cool to be a pirate. Ironically enough if they were to drop the pirate name and flag they wouldn't even be a thought in the government's eye until Robin joined them.

Toei took two panels and turned them into one episode. Studio Pierrot took two panels and turned that into 2-3 episodes.

Yeah, really, Luffy actively got himself the hate at the start.

I thought about it when I was a little in, it's silly he calls himself a pirate constantly.

They do it to prove a point cause they can lol.

Yet a chapter of One Piece still only has about half as much TEXT TEXT TEXT as Negima.

Nami steals shit and you generally get the feeling Luffy and Zoro would not hesitate to kill a motherfucker or two.

In the pilot(s), Luffy wanted to be a Peace Corps...a pirate who stopped bad pirates...this was dropped for the series..meaning Luffy don't care.

Id say Gintama is the only one who beats it since it has paragraphs of dialouge to set up jokes.
But yeah theyre both really dense.

Um.... wrong.

Luffy assaulted a government official at Arlong Park.

And he took out one of the warlords in alabasta.

Hell, Luffy assaulted a marine captain (corrupt as he may have been) when he recruited his first crew member (Zoro)

Even as pirates the world government barely cared about then until Luffy took out Crocodile and Robin joined them. Luffy only had his initial bounty because one corrupt marine was a sore loser.

Ehh...them being on the WG's radar started at Arlong though and it was less about them being pirates and more about them fucking with a good deal one of the Marine captains was taking advantage of in East Blue. I think even without being "pirates" they would have ended up on WGs shit list pretty fast due to standing up to the Marines early on.
