I feel like the movie's outline of a plot was okay, but filling in the details and a lot of things in the movie were just too loose.

Why exactly do the Izoku exist and want to prevent mixed interaction between surface people and underground people? This also seemed to be the reason the underground people were afraid of top dwellers, but it'd be nice there was any better explanation for it.

Early in the movie, were we introduced to Archangel, which were explained just to believe that Agartha had secrets that could better humanity or something - something pretty generic. They also seemed pretty antagonistic for some reason. It wasn't really established well, but the bottom dwellers were aware of them and hated them.

A lot of the conflict in the movie came from those two things - which felt kinda hand-waved to me.

The main girl's motivation was a little bit weak too. I understand she wanted to meet the boy that saved her life again. Star-crossed romance certainly isn't a new thing but I wish there was a little bit more to it - the 'relationship' was established so quickly.

One of these days, should look & rank all of the movies that post-revival Toonami has aired.

The DBZ Broly movie is the one time I actually fell asleep from something airing on Toonami.

See ya next week toonami gaf, when i drop out after Jojo since Naruto is going back to filler hell again.

I think I know which episode you said you liked and yeah it's a ways away yet. There are still like ten episodes of canon, then a filler arc, then a bit more canon before then.

Perhaps the motivation would've worked better if the girl wanted to bring back her father, but then come to the realization of moving on & accepting that death is a part of life, while still having the teacher dude be the one who suffers from not letting go of the past.

Shun/Shin or whoever could still be in it, he could just be the one that lets her know of the place & begins the plot or whatever. Don't even kill him off, just make it one character. Make it so Shun accidentally drops the clavice or whatever it was, so he comes back to get it, but then ends up in the situation that Shin was in.

I meant to post more (like, at all) tonight but kept having issues. Wasn't sure if I was going to watch DBZ or not and ended up watching the second half. Was going to play Skyrim up to Naruto but forgot what time it was and ended up missing most of Naruto, so I just finished watching the west coast airing. I was hear for One Piece but my internet went out shortly after it started. Don't really like Kuma's dub voice. Sounds way too aggressive for his character.

I feel the movie would have been fixed with some slight editing. Shun didn't need to be in the movie. Dad just had to die recently and Asuna could have had trouble dealing with it. Teacher could have been the ally to lead her underground and the military could be the ever present threat. The bottom dwellers would have a good reason to distrust top dwellers seeing as they kill their guardians and a bunch of loose ends could have been tied up. The god of life could finish off the bad guys leaving the conclusion we got except Teach breaks the crystal after a sorrowful goodbye to his wife. Asuna learns the value of life and death and has a conversation with her dad who tells her because his time was limited that those moments with her were even more precious.

Simplifies the story and keeps the main message intact I feel.

Agreed, I didn't see the need to have what's basically "slightly different Shun". I guess it's an example of...what's it called....*looks up Anime Abandon review*...."character fungibility"? Not sure if that's the right term, but basically, what's the point of killing Shun if he's just going to be replaced with Shin, who is almost the exact same with very slight differences? Shun easily could've traveled with Asuna & the teacher. Yes, the death of Shun is what kind of kicks the plot into gear, but again, why make a brother character who is almost similar to the one that just died?

& yes, some simple switches would've made the story much more interesting &, more importantly, more personal. When it comes to Shinkai, he tends to make very character driven stories that make you try to relate to the character. It's why I found Voices of a Distant Star very moving. It took a core concept that can be relatable, in this case long-distance relationships & wondering if the love you have for someone will last, & made it work. I won't lie, I kind of recall tearing up at that film. I cared about the outcome because it was a situation, despite taking it to an extreme with setting it in outer space, that felt personal. Here, it didn't have that & as mentioned, if it was about the father & Asuna's story about coming to terms with the death of a loved one, would've worked much better.

.........think that's all I can say, I feel bad at times that I can't offer up deep thoughts like Seda or some other members here.

My biggest issues is that our 16 yr old felt like she was 12 XD

I dunno. It was kinda nice not to have the obvious beats of "I want to revive my dad, you your wife, lets adventure to make it happen!" It would have been more easily relatable, sure, but it's so... common. I like how some things were a bit more abstract. Seeing Asuna sit with Sh_n that was dead and her pet cat-not-cat, and making peace with them nicely in the afterlife, and returning back to living, was nice. The fact she wasn't sitting with her long-dead dad, and saying "Please papa! Don't go! I'm so alone!" was somewhat refreshing.

I like how Mr. Morisaki looked to her with tearful eyes after "Didn't I warn you not to come?!", and it was also nice how she didn't directly harbor any ill will towards him after he basically killed her to get his wife back. They both got to make peace with the dead in some way or another, and we didn't have to see conflict arise between them for the sake of drama.

On the brothers Shun and Shin... I think the biggest issue, and the reason we needed one to die, is because they didn't believe in the same things. This doesn't mean they couldn't be made into 1 character that had a transformative arch during the movie. However, it was nice to see a character willing to die to get to some place, and actually doing it, instead of just speaking about it, and making bold statements.

I rather liked the fight scenes. The whole things kinda felt like the trappings of a Saturn / PSX RPG in a way. Grandia X Jade Cocoon X Fire Emblem attack animations.

It was a pretty movie that focused on showing animals reacting to the actions of man, and pretty color choices, more than it tried to be a concise, story-driven experience. I actually don't have a problem with this every once in a while.

Great stuff SAB. RIP cake. Looks like you had strawberry filling at least.

Poor Mito. That is the face of someone thinking "I can't show anyone this letter it only further proves my negligence."

Haha, thanks. Glad the strawberry filling was figured out, and you didn't think I just went gore crazy! ;-)

I'd actually really love to see the world of HxH act like a child his age getting into danger is against the ordinary! As calm as she acts reading that letter, I expect her to just shrug her shoulder and say a single sentence, if she received a letter notifying her of his unfortunate death. The world of this show if SO weird!

I wake up to see 26 new pages. Haven't seen that many pages made that quickly in a long while. Heard from Line that the movie was simply ok. That the consensus here?

Movie knocked me out cold for periods, plus my phone died so I stopped posting. Charged it up and woke up for the last 30 minutes.

General Thoughts on Children Who Chase Lost Voices

It's not terribly surprising with this being a film by Makoto Shinkai, but Children who Chase Lost Voices is gorgeous. It is a gorgeous beautiful film. Almost every scene is rich in detail, with a good amount of lighting and shadows. I know some people looked at the designs of the creatures and described them as Ghibli-esque, but a lot of them looked more alien than most Ghibli designs in my opinion.

Tackling this movie story wise is an odd beast though, because it's so packed, yet weirdly superfluous at time. I feel like the three main characters work best together as a group, because when examined individually their actions often seem goofy. Perhaps best shown with Shin who seems to go from ignoring the other two leads, to going to kill them, to just saving them to pay a debt, to being exiled from his clan for saving them. In contrast, Asuna and Morisaki fair better, but didn't really grow on me individuality. However I did feel a sense of relief when everyone at the end made it out alive, because on a certain base emotional level, all the leads are understandable. The Children who Chase Lost Voices isn't so much about death so much as it's about people who don't know how to accept losing someone. Almost everyone seems somewhat lost in their life due to losing someone close to them. Shin seems to focus entirely on his duty. Asuna, while not entirely friendless, seems to lack close loving relationships in her life. Morisaki seems pretty willing to use people to get closer to what he lost. I generally enjoyed the character dynamic in the show, despite the pacing being erratic at times.

At the same time, boy is there a lot in Lost Voices that just eludes me. At one point Asuna has a nightmare about Shun that ends with his arm being ripped off. Later when a Quetzacoatl shows up, it's missing the same arm. As to what that means on a literal or figurative level....*shrugs* The actions of Shun in particular seem odd to me. The way he talked early in the movie made it seem like he knew Asuna on some level, but then that never really goes anywhere...It seems weird to me to introduce an organization like Arch Angels only for them to play no real role in the plot at all. Did the bottom dwellers actually wage war with the top dwellers or were they talking figuratively? Because if it's the first, how did the bottom dwellers hold out at all? How is it that bottom dwelling humans can't survive on the surface, but magical beasts can?

Despite all these questions, I would say I enjoyed Lost Voices. It's kind of a messy enjoyment, but enjoyment none the less. Not the type of movie I'd watch again, but one I enjoyed watching with everyone.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
So I was with yall for a while but the headache which caused me to try and sleep unsuccessfully finally got me to sleep during the movie, the last thing I remember was the teacher with glasses pulling the girl into the water and they could breath in it.

That discussion yesterday about character flaws and what people want makes me wonder how people are going to react to latter episodes of HunterxHunter.

So here's a list of every single movie that Toonami has aired since their revival in 2012:

- Akira
- Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan
- Children Who Chase Lost Voices
- Cooler's Revenge
- Eva 1.11
- Eva 2.22
- FMA: Conqueror of Shamballa
- FMA: Sacred Star of Milos
- Summer Wars
- Trigun: Badlands Rumble

So exactly 10 movies.........exactly enough for a "Top 10 Toonami Movies" list.

Think a few people are & they mentioned that (ending spoilers)
it's basically using the anime's ending

Its basically a Trigun situation where the mangaka gave a rough outline of where things are going and the anime team incorporated them with different executions. Off the top of my head a few manga changes
mine doesn't die she's comatose, kurome is saved by wave and they run away together to live as a couple free of the empire, run has an actual plot line that ties into the emperor's son seriyu and eventually dies

While it's a dumb show I think using an abridged and slightly modified version of the planned manga ending is honestly a good idea.

Almost but some differences as of late:
~The emperor's imperial arms had a second "eyes everywhere" form
~Wave came to help Tatsumi but then quickly booked it to go see kurome
~Tatsumi instead of going super saiyan went incursio beast mode to defeat the emperor
~Akame took some king of booster drug before the final battle with Esdeath, has some unknown cost.
~Tatsumi lost his humanity and transformed into the gaint dragon incursio was made from, still had enough of his mind left to fight esdeath
~Esdeath unleashed her ultimate imperial arms which basically covers the world in a nuclear winter and lost her arm
~Tatsumi told Akame to kill him before incursio took over which she abided by
~Akame woke up her imperial arms form which looks different then the anime.

Thats where were at right now.

So the people over at the |OT| for DBS seem pretty convinced that were not gonna get Super because of merchandising that was leaked sometime back and instead think its gonna go to a kids channel like Nick.

That'd be a pretty hard blow for us if we lost Super to Nick or something, not to mention seeing it butchered to shit would hurt.

Nick has the most to gain from Super but I can't see them getting it.

So yeah, I watched the rest of CWCLV.

It was okay. Like everyone else has mentioned, the film is visually astounding, but everything else is lacking or half-baked. The ending was predictable once the plot of "resurrecting the dead" was brought up

Worth watching once and never seeing again.
