Shinji was the forefather of the "WHAT AM I FIGHTING FOOOOR" whiny emo protagonist.

Renton is at least an optimist 80% of the time even when he's getting his ass kicked. Sure, optimism can be annoying sometimes but I felt it was refreshing considering otherwise I was expecting another Shinji.
