When 4kids fast forwarded to Drum Island (Chopper's Arc) Nami comes down from a random illness. In fact it is because she was running around in shorts in Little Garden and got bitten by an insect and contracted a terrible disease.

One Piece's arcs tend to pay off bot in the long run and short run.

Even in the future events of the manga there are certain to be long running pay offs certain to be revealed at a later date. So yeah. Oda loves doing this stuff
