to be fair, the Japanese voice for the lead was weirdly flat, too.

Migi is pretty decent. Hope they still use "Migi"

But that just wouldn't sound "right".

That VA wasn't too bad by Sentai standards.

It was...okay.

I think the biggest problem with Sentai dubs isn't the actors, it's the directors. I'm convinced their directors don't have any real acting chops.

The leads va will be perfect when
he slowly starts losing his humanity

Flat deliveries for most of the parasyte humans will probably work well due to it sounding alien. Its still clearly bad directing but it unintentionally works out in Sentai's favor.

Just because most of the characters are supposed to be pretty flat doesn't mean they won't find a way to fuck it up. Just look at Akame's voice in the dub. She's supposed to be a character that has flat delivery but somehow it still feels off in the dub.

Wow, they've came really close to nailing Migi.

I wonder if they'll still have Migi named "Migi". In context of the story, changing it to "Righty" in the dub would actually make more sense.

Also as some else has said, the problem with Sentai dubs seems to be more about the direction than the actors. If one of the actors does a bad take, it feels like Sentai's voice director just lets it go rather than having them redo it. Just look at most of Mine's and Tatsumi's lines in Akame ga Kill.

I feel like that's because her voice actor puts more than a little emotion in her more comical scenes, when it's when she should be flatter than normal.

Bad directing to blame I think.

I guess "Righty" would make sense in the context of the English dub, though I imagine they'll just say "Well, Migi is the Japanese word for right, so I'll call you Migi".

..........& I SWEAR, Sentai is going to sneak in a stupid "right hand man" pun somewhere, somehow.

Yup, those two are perhaps the prime examples of VAs that're honestly fine for the most part, but Sentai's Voice Director was just like "alright, that's fine......oh, that was a practice read? NAH, that was good enough, we'll use it!" You can have great VAs, but a bad director can lead to bad performances from said VAs.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
I remember Tokyopop released the Parasyte manga stateside YEARS ago, but they flipped it cause they were one of those companies that thought "Right to Left? Tiny American brains can't comprehend that" so the right-handed monster became a left-handed monster. Called him "Lefty"

real world references are probably not the best option.

I don't know the context, but could the dialogue have worked just as well with "loser internet stalker" or something?

Prison School's biggest folly is it's going to be incredibly difficult to explain why it's good to people

The best description I can give of it is Porn Comedy but that doesnt sound appealing and yet it's hilarious

I'll be honest, I like that dub line in prison school.

And Seda is pretty much right, Prison School is not a timeless classic. It's an anime you watch one, twice at most, and then you're done. So I don't think changing it a bit for the dub is so bad.

Also fuck gamergate, and the pricks associated with it. The entire mass of stupidity that is gamergate is contradictory onto itself. A movement that wants the internet to stay "free", but unleashes hell on anyone who lightly disagrees with them. This isn't about keeping politics out of media. It's about keeping politics they don't like out of media. It's literally all it's ever been.

-it was stupid as far as lines go, kind of like how any Doge memes in games will be painful when we play them years from now
-GamerGate people being made over this is silly to say the least
-The script writers twitter is...erm

no thanks :x

Welp.

That GamerGate mention in the Prison School dub has stirred up some shit.

Aye.

Well, takes a look see at this new HxH...

"Hida Kizuna possesses the HHG (Heart Hybrid Gear) ability, but it is not strong enough to make him particularly important. His older sister calls him to transfer to a strategic defense school, where many of the students (many of which are large-breasted girls) use their HHG abilities to fight invaders from another world while wearing extremely skimpy pilot outfits. Kizuna's fighting ability doesn't measure up, but his sister has another plan-- apparently having erotic experiences with Kizuna will allow the girls to replenish their energy or power-up. It looks like his new school life is going to be full of embarrassment!"

Sounds terrible.

I look forward to watching.

Oh yeah....SAO is over tonight guys.

The series is done...till season 3 gets made.

Or it replaces Kill La Kill as a repeat show.

Space Dandy season 2 never. ;_;

I'm not sure if I should be celebrating or lamenting SAOII ending.

Also, I too find it bizarre that Space Dandy Season 2 is not airing. Doesn't Toonami basically own broadcast exclusivity? Why sit on it?!

honestly, that's probably why. if they can play it at any time, the priority on it is probably pretty low compared to Kill la Kill

I assume:

a) they don't want to expand the schedule

b) they can sit on space dandy now, to air it at some point in the future

c) they can't sit on kill la kill indefinitely so they have to reair now or never

Good point. Better to air shows they will eventually loose the rights to instead of a show they own forever. Save it for a rainy day.

Despite how annoying that was (though at least they were consistant in changing his name to fit the mirrored panels), at the very least, you could count on TokyoPop not censoring anything compared to, say, Viz, where on the page with all the copyright information, you might see "this manga has been altered from its original version" or something.

I also couldn't help but laugh they localized a manga called "Futari Ecchi", which while technically was....yes, ecchi, it was meant to be sort of educational with facts & tips, so TokyoPop brought it over as...I kid you not...."MANGA SUTRA"....but they only released 4 volumes out of 64 & counting.

I probably come across harsher on Parasyte than I really actually am. That's because I was so disappointed with the final product. (Sums up my reactions to MGSV rather well.) It'll be far from the worse show that Toonami has ever aired.

It'll be interesting to see your guys reactions to it, especially if you haven't seen it before

I will give the show this, I really like the ending song.

They sure did cut to the chase of what characters are popular with fujoshi - the ones that treat them like garbage

Well I guess you would have to be a masochist to watch anime anyway!!!!

Okay, I'll have to make my long Akame and Michiko catch up posts later since I gotta go somewhere, but in the meantime just in time for the finale here's Asuna's adventures winding down to the end.

Journey's End

Let me get this straight... Asuna tries desperately to find Yuuki, runs into one of the other guild members, then she logs off, leaving the last traces of any clues to find where Yuuki is, then the next day at school Kirito gives Asuna the address of the hospital where there just so happens to have a full dive machine? How did Kirito know that that was the hospital where that machine was being tested when it sounded from the doctor that they were kind of being secretive about it? I mean... I guess it stands to reason that they would find her eventually, but I felt that the schoolroof scene was almost the dreaded Deus-ex Machina-ish.

The rest of the episode was fairly good, and there was feels and emotions from the doctor's expanation aside from the whole blood transfusion debacle, which, I don't know... that part didn't really click with me. I feel kind of horrible that the instant the doctor spelled out Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome I immediately thought of the Family Guy song. "Not HIV... But FULL BLOWN AIDS~"

I want to go to school again. OH! Maybe you CAN go to school!

Beginning of a Dream

Can I say it? This was probably the best SAO episode in a long, long while. And Asuna finally stood up to go talk to her mother. Maybe Kyouko could try this VR some more.

You're fat. NO, you're fat! Your avatar looks UUGLY. Your ears are weird!

Not much to say what else. I think Alex von David's Twitter feed described this episode better.

Kirito x Kyouko when? Heh heh heh

I can't believe I almost forgot. Tests really tripped me up this week.

Review Time!

To celebrate Toonami day and the final episode of the never ending torture that is SAO let's look back at the good, the bad, and the snoozeworthy.

DBZ Kai

This is my final form...for now. Frieza ditches his Alien form for him more well known look. Things look dire and it is up to Vegeta to sa...pffffhahahaha. Sorry, couldn't finish that sentence. Overall this worked much better in Kai format. Vegeta wasn't left bleeding out all episode. RIP White Mage.

Akame ga Kill

It was funny following Sentai's twitter who was taking Scissor's death much more seriously than anyone in this thread. We just got to know her last episode so her dying just feels cheap. Add the horrible script and bad voice acting and you get some great unintended comedy. Justice Girl is the
2nd
best. Overall the unintentional comedy raised this from being awful.

Michiko e Hatchin

Man this episode is trippy. But not in bad way, Hatchin has been naive from day one and it is nice to see her nut up when she is given so much shit. It is also a nice mother daughter moment at the end even if it was on accident. The only nitpick I have about the episode is that it comes after a huge arc and while a diversion is sometimes appreciated I really wanted to see one more episode dealing with the fallout. Overall this series is consistently an oasis to the terrible Sentai dubs so I am not going to make a huge fuss.

SAO II

Finally SAO II comes to an end...wait...one more episode? WHAT?!?!? This episode closes all the plotlines (shoddily) so it is bizarre we are going to have an entire episode dedicated to a girl dying most likely. SAO's biggest problem is that the plotline was so short and I already hate the characters so much that I don't feel the impact of the resolution at the end. It is a damn shame this series didn't work harder to earn that moment because animation wise it is pretty top notch. Overall I didn't LOATHE the episode it just felt like a whole lot of nothingness. It is a damn shame since SAO finally introduced a character I kind of care about and is now likely going to botch up her death from Super AIDS

Shippuden

Classic. I wish they actually cut canon episodes and had this compensate for it. It hits so much harder and tells so much more with subtle imagery throughout. It is shocking to realize most of the episode is filler because the director Toshiyuki Tsuru (who also did the Cowboy Bebop movie) really made the episode his own. We see all of team 10 grieve and overcome their sadness of losing their teacher as the go out to take on the men who killed him. This episode has me pumped for the rest of the immortal arc.

One Piece

Finally the party ends. We get one hell of a bomb as Shanks and Whitebeard meet and get a small taste of an Emperor's power. Aside from the ominous tones the rest of the episode is more laid back with decent comedy with the Straw hats. It is a shame everyone goes their separate ways into filler town. Fingers crossed it isn't terribly painful.

Rankings!

Classic:

Shippuden (thanks saint Toshiyuki Tsuru! I won't forget you!)

Good:

Michiko e Hatchin
DBZ Kai
One Piece

Meh:

Akame ga Kill! (bump it up if watching it with friends though)
SAOII

Sheele's death more shocked me because I wasn't expecting a main character to get killed so early in the series. I realize in retrospect the death flags were pretty obvious where a few episodes ago "WE CAN DIE AT ANYTIME" and the previous episodes giving Sheele a big focus as the one somewhat sane character in Night Raid that Tatsumi was able to bond with. I can get the complaints of it feeling like a cheap death, but I think it does it's job of making a very clear "no one is safe in this series" statement. The dub clearly doesn't help anything though as it makes all the drama even more hilariously with all the bad acting and line reads.
