You like Samurai Shodown, too.Tekken, SF, VF, SC, GG, KOF and MK are the only ones I'll ever care about.
According to WatchMojo
This list seems to be kind of off imo. Smash? Hmmm….ok. No Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive, Killer Instinct, Samurai Shodown anywhere on the list? If it wasn't for Virtua Fighter, there would probably be no 3D fighters so that definitely should have been up there the same way Street Fighter basically birthed 2D fighters.
Smash Bros has been at Evo more than some franchises on that list and the ones you list. It's a fighting game.A top 10 list from WatchMojo... and they think Smash Bros. is a fighting game....

Franchises can vary in quality and few are consistently impressive. Def Jam, Kengo, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai, Under Night In-Birth, Injustice, Darkstalkers, and Dead or Alive are the only franchises I can think of that had no misses. I would not say any one of their games blew me away as much as individual fighting game releases without franchises or within franchises of varying quality.

They had Mario Kart at EVO. Most fighting game players were happy the hygiene averse legion got booted upon Nintendo's request.
Even the director of the franchise (Sakurai) says it's a party game and not a fighting game.

P.S. The reason its clones never went anywhere is that its crock of shit gameplay design is held up purely by fan service.

Call it what you want really. Smash Bros. is a platform fighting game and the biggest fighting tournament in the world featured it and Smash consistently brought in some of the most viewed matches across all it's years.
Mario Kart DS was only included because Toyota (who were a sponsor at the time) requested a racing game.
Then why Nintendo pulled it from EVO?Call it what you want really. Smash Bros. is a platform fighting game and the biggest fighting tournament in the world
Probably because Sony bought EVO and the thought of a competitor making bank on their IPs makes Nintendo's management's blood boil. Then why Nintendo pulled it from EVO?
There's their partnership with Global Panda, but I find it extremely stupid to do it.Probably because Sony bought EVO and the thought of a competitor making bank on their IPs makes Nintendo's management's blood boil.
People play Roblox competitively. It does not mean shit. Smash is not a fighting game.
Because Nintendo hates competitive Smash.. probably. They've never outright said the reason why but it can be a bunch of things. Then why Nintendo pulled it from EVO?
To give all the other low selling pitiful online player size fighting franchises a chance. If they're pulling decent numbers at EVO why pull the game from it?
Hazardous conditions. Enter at your own risk.Under what category was Smash Bros listed under?
You like Samurai Shodown, too.

Yeah, thumb down on video from me for that ;dYeah it is weird that Virtua Fighter isn't in the list, if it wasn't for that game, there would be no Tekken, or Soul Calibur
It is called Nintendo Derangement Syndrome, some people can't help it.I've never heard someone seriously posit that Smash wasn't a fighting game. Does Smash being included somehow cheapen your entire genre of games?
No, it's a platform fighting game. It does everything a fighting game does with platforming elements on top. It's a party brawler.
It has no health bars. And a fighting game is usually a 1 vs 1 fight - unless you change the fighter in the fight. It's pure chaos with 8 players on the screen at the same time. No, it's a platform fighting game. It does everything a fighting game does with platforming elements on top.
I guess Bushido Blade isn't a fighting game either then...It has no health bars
Bushido blade is an exotic fighting game where you can be killed with one hit. it at least has a 1 vs. 1 fight. it still comes closer to a traditional fighting game than smash. I mean picking up items and knocking opponents off the screen has little to do with fighting games, but fun, brawl, party.I guess Bushido Blade isn't a fighting game either then...
Doesn't matter. It has no health bars.
Keyword: usually. Nobody is arguing it's a traditional fighter. It's a fighting game with platforming elements. Still a fighting game. And a fighting game is usually a 1 vs 1 fight - unless you change the fighter in the fight. It's pure chaos with 8 players on the screen at the same time.
If you've never played anything other than Smash, then this might be a fighting game for you. I mean, Mario Kart isn't compared to Gran Turismo or categorized in that way. Still, even Mario Kart's rules are closer to Gran Turismo than, say, Smash is to Street Fighter.Doesn't matter.

Mario Kart is categorized as a racing game last I checked, so I got no idea what you're talking about. If you've never played anything other than Smash, then this might be a fighting game for you. I mean, Mario Kart isn't compared to Gran Turismo or categorized in that way. Still, even Mario Kart's rules are closer to Gran Turismo than, say, Smash is to Street Fighter.
The default win condition of a fighting game is that an opponent's hit points are reduced to zero. Attacks and throws landed on an opponent reduce their hit points. That is not Smash. No, it's a platform fighting game. It does everything a fighting game does with platforming elements on top.
No, it's to knock out your opponent, which can be achieved through various means such as knocking them off stage, you know, something that you can do in SC or Toshinden. The default win condition of a fighting game is that an opponent's hit points are reduced to zero.
Again, who cares? Did you make up that rule? There are many sets of mechanics in fighting games and Smash adheres to pretty much all of them. The exception is that it adds platforming elements on top. Throws, grabs, combos, juggles, blocks, counters, jumps, jump counters, projectiles, different movesets for different characters, but it ain't a fighter because instead of hit points to defeat the opponent, you gotta knock them off stage…right. Never mind the fact that there are modes in Smash where you can set a percentage and then the winning condition is to reduce it ro 0%, exactly like in traditional fighters. Does Smash become a fighting game under these circumstances?Attacks and throws landed on an opponent reduce their hit points. That is not Smash.
If that was the default then yes. It is funny Smash players need to change the default settings just to play the game competitively. That is not the case in any competitive fighting game.Never mind the fact that there are modes in Smash where you can set a percentage and then the winning condition is to reduce it ro 0%, exactly like in traditional fighters. Yeah, so your definition of fighting games is "reduce your opponent health to zero". Let's ignore the myriad of other mechanics that make up what a fighting game in favor of this incredibly simplistic definition. If that was the default then yes. Many fighting games predate those mechanics.Yeah, so your definition of fighting games is "reduce your opponent health to zero". Let's ignore the myriad of other mechanics that make up what a fighting game in favor of this incredibly simplistic definition.
And many games require reducing your opponent's health to 0 without being fighting games. Many fighting games predate those mechanics.
It's Bloody Roar and it sucks. No blood roar ?
