Toronto's Pacific Mall Hit for Piracy

MARKHAM, ON, May 4 /CNW/ - The Royal Canadian Mounted Police from the
Greater Toronto Area Federal Enforcement Section (FES) executed four search
warrants at the Pacific Mall on Steeles Avenue in Markham. Seized as a result
of the April 27, 2005 searches were in excess of 30,000 music/movie DVDs, 3000
optical discs (games), 1600 multi-game cartridges and approximately $36,000 in
Canadian currency.

In an effort to educate businesses in the Pacific Mall, RCMP spoke to
management and staff to explain that some of the products they were selling
were counterfeit. In the past investigators have found some individuals are
unaware of the counterfeit nature of the products they are selling.

"The theft of intellectual property is a serious crime which negatively
impacts legitimate businesses by unfair competition," said Constable Judy
Laurence of the FES. "The reason the RCMP undertook this initiative is two-
fold. It sends a message to counterfeiters that their actions will not be
tolerated and it also gives business owners who may not have known that they
were breaking the law by selling counterfeit products, the chance to
discontinue their criminal activity."

The RCMP was assisted in these searches by experts from the Entertainment
Software Association, Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Association,
Canadian Recording Industry Association and representatives from numerous
other Intellectual Property Rights holders to ensure the immediate
identification of counterfeit products.

"On behalf of our member company motion picture studios, the Canadian
Motion Picture Distributors Association would like to thank the RCMP for their
enforcement efforts of last week at the Pacific Mall," said Serge Corriveau,
Vice President, Anti-Piracy Operations. "Motion picture piracy costs the movie
industry $3.5 to $4 Billion (US) a year worldwide, and this activity also
presents a tremendous loss of taxable revenue for legitimate Canadian
businesses."

Police estimate the value of the goods seized to be approximately
$800,000. No arrests were made and the investigation (s) is (are) on-going.

Define anymore.

After the search? or before it?

before it... i didn't find any place that had that stuff and i was actually looking

maybe my eyesight is bad :lol

Doesn't this happen every couple of years or so? Vendors get busted, things quiet down for a bit and 6 months later the DVDRs start rolling in.

NoOOooOO
*ahem* I mean good riddance to those bastards! Stealing EA's money like that.

And Dopey would you please stop searching for pirated Xbox stuff in Asian malls? I mean really.

Not only is it a horrible horrendous illegal thing to do (for shame, FOR SHAME!), it's also embarassing.

"In the past investigators have found some individuals are
unaware of the counterfeit nature of the products they are selling." :lol :lol

Uh. Yea. I'm pretty sure they were 'unaware'.

Anyway, here's a tip if you want pirated stuff, from my observations: They put out the pirated racks of DVD's after 6 pm. Hope I don't get banned for this.

This is great news, they get what they deserved, I wished the cops busted the shop owners to teach them hard lessons not to pretend innocent stupid.

Yeah, last time I was at Pacific Mall there were pirated DVD's everywhere. When you see a Jpop dvd that usually sells for $50 going for $6 (cnd) you know something is wrong. :lol

They are all over the shopping centers in chinatown too, I wonder if they will be the next to be hit?

The thing is, if they shut down all the shops that sold pirated software they'd be shutting down about 50% of the shops there. There would be no point in going there anymore unless you want kiddy imported stuffed animals or imported snacks.

I remember going to the Pacific Mall a few years ago with one of my close friends in college, originally from HK (who sadly died last year :()... wow, that had to be the first time in my life where I was the minority... LOL the people at the food court didn't even give me chopsticks to eat with, just a fork and a knife :lol

Actually, most of the imported stuffed animals and other goodies at those places were all pirated as well, none of those Snoopy / Hello Kitty / Pokemon craps were licensed. The Pacific Mall should be renamed to Pacific Pirate Mall for that matter. :lol

the mounties know very well that the "unaware" argument is bullshit. i truly have no idea why they said that.

They all know its pirated. Especially the Game ppl but really they only gave them a warning cause they didnt want to shut down around a 100 shops.

A friend of mine was at Pacific Mall a whiles back and he saw some old lady in the front of the store putting labels on freshly printed copies of "Hitch", which was still in theaters at the time. :lol

I ought to go back there, I've still got two bucks worth of tokens.

Ha ha gwai lo just doesn't know where to look! Anyway, I don't think this will have any lasting effects, since it's happened before and ultimately amounts to nothing except more secure business practices (i.e. storing pirated material in places other than the store). Feigning ignorance is great, though. I'm sure if the mounties went Jack Bauer on their asses they would've fessed up. Too bad Canada's all weaksauce on criminals.

Yeah, this seems to happen all the time there. If you ask me they're in cahoots...they get slipped a couple of envelopes, they raid the place, make their "piracy is wrong" speech, then go back to HQ. The mall guys probably see it as nothing more then a mob tax that's paid a couple times a year. :lol

I've only been there a couple times, and laughed out loud walking into these places and seeing the selections. Saw one store making PS2 burns in plain view while U wait. :lol Anyone with that amount of balls deserves to stay in business. They don't bother me at all.

It's about time those guys got busted, They deal with cheap Clone modchips, and their installs are crap, and when you're done they offer to sell you pirated games. (If you're not a "round-eye" as they liked to call me) Hopefully someone shuts those shops down for GOOD!

I was looking for a modchip, just a modchip! I don't even need the damn thing soldered. I wanted to make my Xbox with the busted DVD drive become a media hub. But whatever.

I have no interest in pirating the games

I remember visiting a store in Chinatown in Montreal that had racks and racks of game OSTs. Upon closer inspection, all the case arts seemed cheaply printed and they had none of the real OSTs I knew about, so I'm pretty sure all of it was pirated stuff.

My friend said he say the 'raid' and that it was only one store.

He said that's there are more stores within the mall that sell pirated stuff than one may think.

Clever way of hiding the merchanside I guess.

In case you don't have a clue, I'm the guy that headed up the games investigations. Though, I do realize that it's hard to read between the lines.

yeah... thanks for the vanity propaganda thread.

There's like 14 game stores in that place...if any of 'em aren't selling pirated games, I'll eat my arm. :lol

WHY is it called Pacific mall. :P

Probably because it's 100% Asian. Otherwise it's a name, who gives a shit?

I think my main reason for not going up there more often is that I don't wanna get caught up in the middle of a raid. :lol
