Total War: Rome 2 |OT| I Came, I Saw, I Came

Hi,

I'm having performance and pop in issues like most of you but I'm still enjoying the game.
I'm relatively new to the series and find the UI quite hard to navigate, maybe I'm missing something but how do you keep public order in check?
I've tried building temples and making sure I have a food surplus but rebellions still pop up everywhere. Any other tips would be welcome.

PS: everyone seems to say no to my trade agreements even with an additional 5000 gold. Any tips with diplomacy?
If you click on a city and mouse over the public order number in the info box that pops up in the bottom left of the UI it should detail all the + and - of the city/province. Culture is important so you need to make dignitery agents and have them in your territory to spread your culture, particularly if you've just conquered a territory that is from a different cultural background. Enemy agents can reduce public order too.
Trade has always been a bit odd. However, if you have nothing to trade with then you'll find it harder to get trade agreements. You trade only the products produced in a region, so if you don't own a region that produces something like wine, leather etc you won't have anything to trade with. Others may still make approaches to trade with you, however.

I got a general from other houses with gravitas of 90+, it's a small army posted south of Italy, damn it, ignored it for too many turns.

Anyone know a good guide for what to build in provinces? I assume the best approach is to specialise things like Military province, Food province and Research...
i.e. What should I build in my Rome campaign in Italia province?
This game is pretty fun minus the bugs and issues but the tutorial doesn't explain anything in regards to what to build.

Endless support drop, my house leader's daughter stroked a senator, and 50 senators decided to withdraw support. Now it's only 8%, how do I save that?

My Rome II crashes at startup if i use Radeon Pro, for FXAA, or SweetFX...dafuq, first two days it work perfectly...

I don't have a radeon card, but are you using d3doverrider or some kind triple buffering. Usually you can tell if there's a conflict between injector and vsync/triple buffer when you start a game up and hear windows making a beep or bell sound.

Nope, nothing but if i disable API monitoring, from Radeon Pro, the games works fine...but api are necessary to force post process effects like fxaa, smaa or sweetfx.
What a strange situation

Welp, after 70 hours, glory to the Roman Republic ! (steam time is messed up somehow, not correctly showing time played)

15 Legions, 9 Fleets, 5 Spies, 5 Diplomats, 5 Champions with a 29 percent control (peak was 71) of the senate after the civil war .

I'm just distraught that in a year or maybe earlier after all the patches, I won't be able to play Rome again when it's all polished. shietttt

How are you using it? Testudo should be broken when you've closed in with the enemy because you're gimping your own melee.

I'm using it mostly when going up a hill against archers

New version of the Radious Mod Pack out today.

Updates adds various AI fixes. I'll C/P the changes since the site is slow.

Changes to AI recruitment priorities - more balanced armies with less ranged units (this will be very hard to complete, first needed file for this change is edited, but AI modding is divided into many many files, not all can be modded yet, so don't expect super balanced armies yet, but it should have small effect on your game)
AI difficulty bonuses edited - normal difficulty and easier untouched. From Hard difficulty AI got several small bonuses to develop faster, maintain more and better armies. Bonuses will be rise with higher difficulties, none is extreme.
Recruitment slot for armies increased by 1 - global bonus for player and AI
AI will prefer slightly more military development and construction.
AI will try to keep less money and spend more on armies and construction.
AI preferences at war are military constructions and navy
AI will spend less money on and cultural building, will prefer more military and economic structures
AI will spend less money on agents, more on armies and navies
Additional recruitment preferences, less archers, more cavalry and melee units.

TWC is getting hammered so just wait it out until the page loads. This is also compatible with old saves, although it's recommended that you start over so the AI gets all the new benefits from the start.

I've been having a lot more fun with the game after installing Radius' battle mod, it slows down battles a bit and stops units from running after very small losses. It changed the game from unplayable to actually looking forward to battles. The computer is still an idiot sometimes but I'm actually having a lot of fun. Also, its fun to try some of the Gallic and Germanic tribes, quite challenging. Plus, if you're roleplaying, those are probably your ancestors anyway ;D

Does that work with existing saves or do you have to start a new game do you know?

Damn it, they really need to fix blockades. They really shouldn't be treated as never ending sieges which prevent over land attacks; some cities have been under blockade for decades at this point in my game. I don't want to attack the blockading ships since they belong to my client states but there seems to be no other way to get rid of them so I can attack the affected cities.

Shame there don't seem to be any hidden settlements anywhere on the map. Fighting the Amazons in Rome I was a fun post-game challenge. I was really hoping that with such giant wastelands there'd be something out there.

Yep, pisses me off too. That's why I go to war with everyone, other factions usually get in the way.

The Gravitas/family system makes no sense to me and I can't seem to find a good explanation what it is anywhere.

Yeah... I just haven't really touched that at all as I have no clue on it.

Having played a bunch this weekend and its little things that kind of annoy me with Rome II. Things that they seemingly took out from past Total War games for no reason. Like having the buttons of the battle UI to wheel around your lines of troops.

The UI in general is just such a mess in this game. Its just baffling considering Shogun 2's was quite good and intuitive.

Yeah I have no idea why they left that out. You can use the arrow keys to do it, but it's still really odd to not have that. That seems to be the case for a lot of the UI elements. Now that I've gotten used to them, I don't mind most things, but it's just the general lack of explanation and detail that's just strange.

That said, the one UI change that I actually really like is how the cities are laid out. Really easy to manage a province and jump from city to city quickly.

Either naval warfare is broken or im just awful at it

Yeah, what's up with that. It seems like the AI has an awful advantage with two things that I simply can't get done:

The AI can back up and ram again. I can sometimes do this, but I need to command every single attack manually, for every ship. Often it simply doesn't work, though: My ship simply stays there taking damage unless I ask them to move away (at this point they turn sideways and get killed faster)

Boarding seems iffy too: If the AI decides they want to keep ramming it doesn't seem to be possible to board them head on, they can only be boarded against their will from behind more often than not. Ironically this doesn't seem to happen to us, if you ram a boarding unit with a ranged unit you can bet your ass that they're instantly getting boarded.

So yeah, broken or do I simply not know what I'm doing?

I've written off fighting naval battles and only auto-resolve. Things have worked out much better since; my transport army can take down a proper navy 3 times its size. I guess they had the right idea in Rome I.

One thing I'm really liking is the army cap, as to me it reflects how Rome historically reacted to problems. Unable to defend all of its borders, it let the enemy push in before assessing them and dispatching a legion. Using the garrisons to deal with the rabble and legions for the "proper" fights feels much better than it did in Empire or Shogun 2. I'm just getting bored of fighting horde upon horde of spear levies and slingers.

My enemy took my city, and my ally took it back. Now it's in the hand of my ally, I can't tell my ally to simply give it back can I?

Got about 8 hours of play time in this game so far. I'm judging this game pretty damn terrible and shelving it for a good long while. Aside from the pathetic performance, the building system is a chaotic mess (probably due to the terrible UI), the AI is non-existent in the campaign map, I can walk my dog in between turns, and I still haven't fought a single relatively even non-siege battle.

I have told all my friends to wait for a steam sale next spring, and I would suggest anyone else on the fence to do the same.

Not that I'm aware of, I had a civil war event where I lost my Capitol and surrounding villages and then had them retaken by my satrap...that satrapy doesn't exist any more.

Can't sell or give away territory either any more, used to be a favoured tactic of mine to loot/scorch the earth then sell it back.

It does work with existing saves. Some people also like the two turns per year mod which allows your generals to live twice as long (as they die quite early, much before they have a chance to mature their skills to any degree).

I went from having 3 minute blob battles to having units that held their proper formation until losses were too great. I had a really fun battle in a forest terrain map. Outnumbered about 2-1, I charged my Celtic spearmen into the enemy lines, they threw their spears and charged head on. The shields smashed together and I took my light cavalry around the year to take out some of their ranged units. It was really cool to zoom in for a minute and see thousands of men cutting each other to pieces in the middle of a forest. I ended up losing the battle in a close match but it was much much more fun than without the mod.

I know people complain about the time in between turns but I dont notice it being too bad. Then again I downloaded the Radious mod right after installing so I dont know what vanilla is actually like.

I have a decent computer and the game loaded on an SSD. At about turn 100 and it takes 30-60 seconds for a turn to finish (No AI moves)

My turn-time is only like 3~5 mins, what's your rig?

Then I'll have to bring my ally down, I have no choice ;_;

I'm probably averaging about 5 minutes. My i5 is like 2 gens old now, but the rest of my rig is beefy. No SSD. But there is no excuse for 5 minute turns. They need to be 30 seconds or less on an average rig.

It would probably help as well if they had separate graphics settings for the strategic and battle maps. I don't need to be using up PC horsepower for pretty graphics on the strategic map. Give me fast turns above pretty graphics.

It was a fun role playing tactic as well. I remember burning Jerusalem to the ground before I lost it to the Moors, felt satisfying.

Has performance improved yet? I'm running a 2500k with a OCed 6970 2GB, and tempted to pick this up.

It's about the same for me, ie horrendous and at the very least unacceptable on the campaign map which should never be hitting 20 FPS with a GTX670. Or at least, with what it's showing.

I wish the game was more clear as to the people you were at war with. Came to help my ally when he was attacked and several turns later I looked and I'm at war with 10 smaller nations apparently.

I'm running it with an i5-2500K and GTX 560Ti. I've definitely seen some improvement since the patch, the frames are stable enough. My problem is with the shadows and some textures being out of control.

Another update to the Radious mod. Really great stuff the modders are doing with this. Radious has been getting a lot of pressing concerns fixed daily.

Mod Updated:

Added recent changes from Battle, Campaign, Graphics and Economy mods:

Unit cohesion improved - units will keep some distance and not just rush to each other completely, they spread more, looks better, works better. Much better for watching combat.
Unit abilities added - Roman infantry got defensive testudo formation, they can now use both - offensive and defensive
Abilities recharge time changed - most boosting/magic abilities got recharge time increased, mostly from 60-120 seconds to 180 seconds.
Anti cavalry and elephants bonuses changed - some weapons had no bonus vs these units, like pikes were forgotten completely (CA really must hate phalanxes ), this is fixed, elite weapons has slightly better bonuses then normal ones.

Smith bonuses changed - melee damage bonus slightly reduced on level 2 and 3

Additional small selecting and dust effects removed - minor effects which most probably nobody didnt noticed, yet they were still present are gone, possible minor fps boost with no visual quality lost.Enjoy.

Lower attrition while sieging city - effect was too high, hardly possible to spend few turns for proper siege equipment, from 10% penalty redeced to 5% per turn.

Enjoy.

Going to wait a couple of weeks and then install this, however it sounds really nice. It's shame though that CA is so slow to fix their own game compared to modders lol.
