TRON Rollercoaster Coming To Walt Disney World

Link.

A TRON rollercoaster is coming to Walt Disney World, according to WDW News Today. Disney Parks will reportedly announce at D23 Expo this weekend that the TRON Lightcycle Power Run rollercoaster from Shanghai Disneyland will be replicated for a new attraction at Orlando's Walt Disney World to open in 2020 or 2021.

The TRON rollercoaster will reportedly replace the Tomorrowland Raceway, which opened in 1971.

Lock if old.

I fight for the (Fast Pass) users!

Disney's Animal Kingdom: "I have a new ride based on a movie no movie-goer under 35 cares about!"

Magic Kingdom: "Hold my beer."

Legacy did wonders for recognition, and it's otherwise an incredibly recognizable brand. I think plenty of people will care about it.

EDIT: I looked at some footage. Visually it's incredible but the ride itself doesn't seem that great.

I don't think this is remotely as bad as hitching their wagon to Avatar, because the strength of the IP is not what makes the ride attractive.

Everybody loves a rollercoaster, so the theming doesn't particularly matter for an attraction like this. For a slow-paced ride that revolves around looking at animatronics, the IP is going to be more important.

They also had a Tron TV show that ran on the Disney Channel for a bit, so it's not like this is unrecognizable to kids.

Okay, I've gotten weirdly involved with Disney message boards recently because I'm planning a family trip there. On one of them, they've been speculating this for months, and they generally hate this site for basically taking stuff they say and publishing it like it's their own scoops.

The current rumor there, though, is that it's not replacing the speedway, it's going behind it and will be an addition. Here's the thread

Oof, the removal of Tomorrowland Speedy is definitely gonna trigger some Disney Faithfuls.

Definitely intrigued to see how they're going to further ruin update Epcot Center.

Honest opinion: I think people sometimes care too much about the IP a ride's based on.

I mean, Splash Mountain is literally based on the animated segments of a banned racist live action film from years ago, and yet it's one of the most iconic and beloved Disney theme park attractions.

Say what you will about Avatar itself, but Flight of Passage is incredible. It's a motion simulator that makes you actually feel like you're flying. In the end I don't think it or Pandora were a waste of time at all, especially since AK needs all the rides it can get.

I'm under 35 and I care.

It's a cool looking rollercoaster. I don't even understand your sentiment.

Eh it's cool looking, but it doesn't do anything for me.

With all these things that are rumored, a copy of a ride from Shanghai Disney doesn't do anything for me.

Give me Fire Mountain, give me Bald Mountain, give me Disney Mountain.

I want something unique and interesting, not a carbon copy which seems to be what they are doing for all the Orlando Disney parks.

France is going to get Ratatouille COPY!
Magic Kingdom is going to get Tron COPY!

I just think Disney throwing everything into a movie that was pretty to look at, but was nothing to write home about, and it's impending delayed sequels was a bad idea.

They were better off going back to the well of Beastly Kingdom and bring it to life.

It's new for 99% of park goers.

This is like, the number 1 rollercoaster in the world I want to ride. This will make me go to Disneyworld.

So like, job done Disney.

Lol at people getting salty that theme park attractions change. Welcome to themeparks!

Most people will never visit the parks in France and China. I see nothing wrong with bringing those experiences stateside if they are good.

Okay, but Pandora isn't a copy, and that at least looks interesting. But you don't like that one either, because of its IP.

I don't really like Avatar either, but it feels like Pandora is an interesting enough expansion that it's worthwhile even if you don't care about the underlying IP, and as an IP it actually fits pretty well with the park.

And yes, the Beastly Kingdom was an interesting idea, but for me execution is so much more important that concept. An area themed after dinosaurs should be a slam dunk, but Dinoland is terrible. Similarly, the Toy Story Land stuff should be easy to build a land out of but the concepts of that look pretty underwhelming.

This is awesome news, I've wanted to ride this since I saw a video of it but I'm not going to Shanghai anytime soon, looking forward to it!

Kind of sad the speedway will be gone but it is pretty dated and Disney needs to modernize their US parks just so they can keep up with the overseas parks.

Good. The speedway is incredibly outdated, and sticks out like a sore thumb in Tomorrowland. The gas powered cars stink up the air, they steer like bumper cars, and there's nothing futuristic about them. If they had spent the money to upgrade them all to properly handling electric cars I'd be in favor of keeping the attraction as it would help promote EVs, and would fit with the themeing better.

Super happy that the lightcycle coaster is coming stateside. Ride looks incredible, and I'm a huge Tron fan, so I love every aspect of this decision.

Reliable folks (martin at least) is saying this is going behind the Speedway, not replacing it.

But I agree, I wish they would get rid of the gas-guzzlers in Tomorrowland of all places.

I'd be fine with keeping the Speedway as long as they get rid of the smelly cars. It's fucking hazardous (I've heard they actually give bonus hazard pay to people who work that ride) and you can smell it even if you're just in the general vicinity of the area (walking by or waiting in line at Tea Party).

I also believe that for what Pandora is, it took way too long to build for the payoff the general public got.

When you look back at things and realize DISNEYLAND the entire PARK was built in a little over a year it's mind boggling how a small land could take several years.

I don't like having IP's of things that aren't overly popular i.e. Avatar and Tron.

Does it fit the theme of Animal Kingdom? Sure, but the boat ride was super disappointing, it was like Living with the Land with blacklights and one AMAZING AA at the end.

Dinoland isn't that bad to me because of the sub-story it told, at least with Chester and Hester. They found a way to do something on the cheap, and yet make it have some sense.

Good.

The speedway sucks. It's smelly and takes up a huge amount of real estate. Plus doesn't even fit in with "Tomorrowland".

And this Tron ride looks really cool.

I've been to Magic Kingdom a few times and I honestly don't remember ever even seeing the Tomorrowland Speedway haha. It's been years though. Tron seems perfect for a ride/rollercoaster.

My mother has worked for that Disney location for 10 years

Shes probably thrilled for the new ride but dreading the massive crowd it will bring

RIP tomorrowland employees

If you walk between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland, you may not see it, but you can sure as hell smell it.

I dunno, Speedway still draws a pretty good crowd because of little kids.
