Thats insane to me. The Republicans are so backwards in their attitudes to almost everything that it's hard to rectify that the majority of white americans agree with them.

Is it that crazy? Conservative policies tend to favor those who are already well off, at the expense of those who do not have a fair share. White people hold the power in the US, so a lot of Democratic arguments about social or economic problems ring hollow for them. They have not experienced the worse part of inequity.
It's basically been a chorus of "we like the way things are!" Well, of course you do... you have lived the benefit of the ruling class for generations. Now, because of shifting demographics, the tune has become "we liked the way things were!" Social progress has been made, and each generation moves closer to equality. To those who benefit, progress is victory. To the hegemony, it is eroding ground. The king wants to keep his seat at the top of the hill. This does not seem preposterous to me.
On the contrary, they now have an easy excuse "Well it was all Trump's fault" to absolve themselves of any blame.
Seeing Mike Pence's strategy, that appears to be the strategy. They are going to double down on paleo-conservatism but probably through a different vessel.
is it pretty close though? Or are whites voting Republican 2 to 1 or something like that?

I mean, it's obviously not that large of a margin or we'd only have Republicans winning the popular vote. There's still a fuck-ton of white people in America.

I live in Trump town, Ohio. You can't go a mile without seeing a Trump Pence lawn sign.
Pence himself is literally at a diner down the street from my house as I type this.
It's not by a lot, but voters are mostly white, so a single-digit difference means a lot.

I live in a (very white) suburb in Wisconsin and I've seen Drumpf/Pence signs on people's lawns all over the fucking place. Even more so once you drive out into the rural farmland (no surprise there). I haven't seen a single Hillary sign anywhere. Not one. I know she has her supporters around here, but since they're greatly outnumbered they probably just keep it to themselves.
Also, the Drumpf signs are almost always accompanied by a "We support our police!" sign.
I'm in NY and it's very similar here. (Long Island) Lots of Trump lawn signs, but I have been seeing more Hillary stuff lately - specifically bumper stickers.
Nothing compares to 2008, though. Obama signs everywhere. EVERYWHERE.

I live in Midwest Suburban White People Land, and there are more yard signs for Johnson here than for Trump. I think some of my neighbors actually are the mythical "I'll vote for Trump but I'm embarrassed to talk about it" Republicans though.

It varies sometimes it's a point or two sometimes a lot more than that. For example Romney won by 20 points getting almost 60% of the white vote, McCain won it by 12 and Dole in 96 by 2 but that really doesn't matter.
White folk are the only demographic the GOP wins basically.
They are the only reason the GOP is competitive.
Minorities literally save every election the Dems win.
If they broke for the Dems at the same ratio that White folk break Republican? Democrats would never get elected.
The diversity of the United States is the biggest thing that keeps it progressing. It's the firewall against the right wing uprising momentum you're seeing all over the world.
