Sen. Angus King, a Maine independent who caucuses with Democrats, said he now ”reluctantly" believes that impeachment is on the table for President Trump, following reports that he asked former FBI Director James Comey to end the probe into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
The New York Times first reported that Trump asked Comey after a February meeting to ”see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go," according to a memo the then-FBI director wrote.
The meeting took one day after Flynn resigned, according to the Times, which reported that Comey's memo was part of an effort to create a paper trail documenting what he saw as Trump's improper influence on the investigation.
In an interview on CNN on Tuesday evening, Wolf Blitzer asked King if the details of the report may bring lawmakers ”closer to the possibility of yet another impeachment process."
”Reluctantly, I have to say yes, because obstruction of justice is such a serious offense," King responded.
”I say it with sadness and reluctance. This is not something I have advocated for, or the word has not passed my lips in this whole tumultuous three of four months."

Joining this sentiment are Democrats from the House Oversight Committee:
All 33 Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee and House Judiciary Committee sent a letter Tuesday demanding an "immediate" investigation of President Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and top White House aides, following a week of bombshell reports on the Trump administration.
The letter, addressed to the chairmen of both committees, starts: ”We are writing to request that the Oversight Committee and the Judiciary Committee launch an immediate joint investigation into whether President Donald Trump and his top officials are engaged in an ongoing conspiracy to obstruct the criminal, counter-intelligence, and oversight investigations currently being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Justice, and Congress into members of his presidential campaign and their contacts with Russian officials."
The letter was sent as the Trump administration grapples with the aftermath of Trump's surprise firing of former FBI Director James Comey last week, a fallout on Monday after reports emerged that Trump disclosed top secret information to Russian diplomats and a new report Tuesday evening that Trump asked Comey to stop his investigation for former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
"Given the gravity of the events that have occurred over the past several weeks, there is simply no reasonable question that the Oversight Committee and Judiciary Committee should already be conducting a robust investigation of these issues that includes public hearings, document requests, and interviews and depositions," the letter continues. "It is unacceptable to continue ignoring these scandals."
All 33 Democrats on the two committees signed the letter.

Republican Senator McCain has also echoed the need for an independent investigation and further action.
Arizona Sen. John McCain (R) reportedly said Tuesday that scandals within President Trump's administration are reaching a "Watergate size and scale."
McCain made the statement at a International Republican Institute dinner on Tuesday night. Multiple reporters said that during a speech at the event, McCain compared recent reports surrounding Trump's administration to Watergate.
