I don't know about other types of guns but you can open carry a handgun without a permit in VA, I live here.

Not strange at all to see random people with a gun in holster while in Gamestop or Walmart but you need a permit for it to be concealed.Very uncomfortable to say the least , one law I would like changed. Our gun laws have very little restrictions.
